Normative data for parameters of sagittal spinal alignment in healthy subjects: an analysis of gender specific differences and changes with aging in 626 asymptomatic individuals.

PURPOSE: This study aims to establish normative data for parameters of spino-pelvic and spinal sagittal alignment, gender related differences and age-related changes in asymptomatic subjects. METHODS: A total of 626 asymptomatic volunteers from Japanese population were enrolled in this study, including 50 subjects at least for each gender and each decade from 3rd to 8th. Full length, free-standing spine radiographs were obtained. Cervical lordosis (CL; C3-7), thoracic kyphosis (TK; T1-12), lumbar lordosis (LL; T12-S1), pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT), sacral slope (SS) and sagittal ve

Vesical dysfunctions after radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer: a critical review.

Functional disorders of the lower urinary tract are the most common long-term complications following radical surgery for cancer of the uterine cervix (8-80%). These disturbances were associated to the partial interruption of the autonomic fibers innervating the bladder during the resection of anterior, lateral and posterior parametrium and vaginal cuff. The pathophysiology of these changes is actually debated. The nature of the surgical damage appears to be a decentralization rather than a complete denervation and bladder dysfunctions may be either the unmasking of intrinsic detrusor activity

Absence of correlation between transient cranial hemorrhages and congenital malformations following neural crest ablation in chicks.

Ablation of premigratory cardiac neural crest has been used to produce and study extensively a model of abnormal cardiovascular dysmorphology. Previous and continuing research in this laboratory concerns different aspects of the involvement of cranial neural crest in the development of cranial, cervical and cardiac tissues in chick embryos. Recently, we detected the occurrence of transient cranial hemorrhages 24-48 hr after the ablation of selected segments of premigratory cranial neural crest. Since one possible mechanism of action for certain teratogens involves nonreparable damage to a prim

Predictive value of Müller maneuver, cephalometry and clinical features for the outcome of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. Evaluation of predictive factors using discriminant analysis in 30 sleep apnea patients.

The success rate of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea is generally only 50-60%. In order to improve this, various predictive factors for the outcome of UPPP were studied, including the Müller maneuver and cephalometry. Thirty unselected consecutive patients with obstructive sleep apnea (median apnea index (AI) 26 apneas/h, range 5-78) underwent UPPP with standard tonsillectomy except in the case of small tonsils and using CO2 laser for the palatal resection. Polysomnographic control 5 months after surgery showed that 63% of all patients had obtained a

Respiratory muscle compensation for unilateral or bilateral hemidiaphragm paralysis in awake canines.

In humans and some animals, the surviving respiratory muscles are able to compensate fully for unilateral, and partially for bilateral, hemidiaphragm paralysis. To examine differential activity of individual respiratory muscles after unilateral or bilateral diaphragm paralysis, length and electromyogram (EMG) of left costal and crural diaphragm segments, parasternal intercostal, and transversus abdominis were measured directly in five awake canines after implantation with sonomicrometry transducers and bipolar EMG electrodes under three conditions: during normal breathing (NOFRZ), after infusi

Local blood flow and vascular permeability of autonomic ganglion-transplants in the brain.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the blood vessels of transplanted neural tissue retain their functional characteristics. Quantitative autoradiography was used to measure local blood flow (F) with iodoantipyrine and the blood-to-tissue transfer constant (K) with alpha-aminoisobutyric acid in superior cervical ganglion (SCG) allografted to the surface of ventricle IV and into the cerebellum of the same rat. The F of the intraparenchymal grafts was slightly lower than that of the intraventricular grafts; F decreased between 1 and 4 weeks in SCG grafts at both sites. The permeab

Evaluation of Head and Body Kinematics Experienced During Parachute Opening Shock.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. Army conducts airborne operations in order to insert soldiers into combat. Military airborne operations are physically demanding activities with a unique loading environment compared with normal duties. A significant amount of research surrounding airborne operations has focused on assessing the incidence and type of associated injuries as well as the potential risk factors for injuries. During parachute opening shock and other high-acceleration events (e.g., fixed wing flight or vehicle crashes), the neck may be vulnerable to injury if inertial loads overcome the volunt

Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Increases Pseudarthrosis Rates in Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusions.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort. PURPOSE: To determine (1) the effects of serotonin reuptake inhibitors in pseudarthrosis rates after anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) and (2) to identify patient-reported outcome measures in patients taking serotonin reuptake inhibitors. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Recent literature suggests that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may inhibit fracture healing via downregulation of osteoblast differentiation. Spinal fusion supplementation with osteoblast-rich substances enhances spinal fusion, thus SSRIs may be detrimental. METHOD

Association of gingival recession and other factors with the presence of dentin hypersensitivity.

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) may be present in association with gingival recession. The aim of this study was to determine quantitatively the association of gingival recession and other factors with the presence of DH. One hundred and four Japanese subjects with or without gingival recession were randomly selected. Intact canines and/or first premolars in both maxillary and mandibular quadrants were analyzed. Gingival recession was measured as a vertical length at the buccal site of the teeth. DH was recorded as an ordered categorical variable registering four increasing levels of pain after c

Spinal deformity changes in children with long-term vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib treatment.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: In several studies, vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib (VEPTR) implants have shown good scoliosis control in children with the longest reported follow-up of 3.6 years. For growing rods, recent studies suggest a decreased efficiency of correction starting just after that time. To our knowledge, no long-term results of children with VEPTR treatment are available. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate spinal deformity in scoliotic children and to investigate correction potential of VEPTR implants at several time points of treatment, particularly after long-term follo

Characteristics and clinical value of an intravenous echo-enhancement agent in evaluation of high-grade internal carotid stenosis.

Although ultrasound is a highly useful tool for clinical diagnosis, it has certain limitations in accurately quantifying internal carotid stenosis or diagnosing internal carotid occlusion. However, these limitations can be overcome by increasing the echogenicity of flowing arterial blood by use of echo-enhancement agents. Two phase III studies assessed the usefulness of the IV transpulmonary echo enhancer Levovist (SH U 508A) in improving characterization and quantification of severe internal carotid stenosis on ultrasound scans. In addition, Levovist-induced enhancement characteristics of the

Comparing outcomes of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion in workman's versus non-workman's compensation population.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is an accepted surgical procedure to treat degenerative conditions, including disc herniations and spinal stenosis. The literature on lumbar spine surgery reports that patients with a workman's compensation claim have less successful clinical results. Regarding the cervical spine, however, different conclusions have been drawn. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to directly compare the functional outcomes of ACDF in patients with and without a workman's compensation claim and to determine whether a compensation claim adver

A proposed bio-panel to predict risk for spontaneous preterm birth among African American women.

Preterm birth (PTB), or birth prior to 37 weeks gestation, impacts 11.5% of U.S. deliveries. PTB results in significant morbidity and mortality among affected children and imposes a large societal financial burden. Racial disparities in PTB are alarming. African American women are at more than 1.5 times the risk for PTB than white women. Unfortunately, the medical community's ability to predict who is at risk for PTB is extremely limited. History of a prior PTB remains the strongest predictor during a singleton gestation. Cervical length and fetal fibronectin measurement are helpful tools. How

Cerclage suture type to prevent pregnancy loss in women requiring a vaginal cervical cerclage: the C-STICH RCT.

BACKGROUND: Second trimester miscarriage and preterm birth is a significant global problem. Surgical cervical cerclage is performed to prevent pregnancy loss and preterm birth. It utilises either a monofilament or braided suture. It is hypothesised that a braided material becomes colonised with pathogenic bacteria that causes vaginal dysbiosis, infection and cerclage failure. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of the study was to examine the effectiveness of using a monofilament suture material as opposed to a braided suture material on pregnancy loss in women requiring a vaginal cervical cerc

Temperature data analysis for 22 patients with advanced cervical carcinoma treated in Rotterdam using radiotherapy, hyperthermia and chemotherapy: a reference point is needed.

INTRODUCTION: The growing interest and participation in multi-institutional trials involving deep hyperthermia treatment is an important step towards the further consolidation of hyperthermia as an oncological treatment modality. However, the differences in the clinical procedures of hyperthermia application also raises questions as how to compare the reported temperatures data obtained by the different institutes. In this study our recent developed approach, RHyThM (Rotterdam Hyperthermia Thermal Modulator), has been used for thermal data analysis to investigate the temperature dynamics behav
