Human plague in the USA: the importance of regional and local climate.

A 56-year time series of human plague cases (Yersinia pestis) in the western United States was used to explore the effects of climatic patterns on plague levels. We found that the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), together with previous plague levels and above-normal temperatures, explained much of the plague variability. We propose that the PDO's impact on plague is conveyed via its effect on precipitation and temperature and the effect of precipitation and temperature on plague hosts and vectors: warmer and wetter climate leading to increased plague activity and thus an increased number of

Early determination of the reproductive number for vector-borne diseases: the case of dengue in Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a new method of deriving the reproductive number for vector-borne diseases from the early epidemic curves for vector-borne diseases with incubations in the vectors and in the hosts. METHOD: We applied the model to several dengue epidemics in different climatic regions of Brazil: Brasilia, Belém, Fortaleza, Boa Vista. RESULTS: The new method leads to higher estimates of the reproductive number than previous models. CONCLUSION: At present, Aedes aegypti densities, the meeting of more compatible strains of viruses and mosquitoes, may lead to re-emergence of urban yellow

Impact of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation on visceral leishmaniasis, Brazil.

We used time-series analysis and linear regression to investigate the relationship between the annual Niño-3 index from 1980 to 1998 and the annual incidence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the State of Bahia, Brazil, during 1985-1999. An increase in VL incidence was observed in the post-El Niño years 1989 (+38.7%) and 1995 (+33.5%). The regression model demonstrates that the previous year's mean Niño-3 index and the temporal trend account for approximately 50% of the variance in the annual incidence of VL in Bahia. The model shows a robust agreement with the real data, as only the influence

Seasonal variation of Titan's atmospheric structure simulated by a general circulation model.

The seasonal variation of Titan's atmospheric structure with emphasis on the stratosphere is simulated by a three-dimensional general circulation model. The model includes the transport of haze particles by the circulation. The likely pattern of meridional circulation is reconstructed by a comparison of simulated and observed haze and temperature distribution. The GCM produces a weak zonal circulation with a small latitudinal temperature gradient, in conflict with observation. The direct reason is found to be the excessive meridional circulation. Under uniformly distributed opacity sources, th

Phylogeography's past, present, and future: 10 years after Avise, 2000.

Approximately 20 years ago, Avise and colleagues proposed the integration of phylogenetics and population genetics for investigating the connection between micro- and macroevolutionary phenomena. The new field was termed phylogeography. Since the naming of the field, the statistical rigor of phylogeography has increased, in large part due to concurrent advances in coalescent theory which enabled model-based parameter estimation and hypothesis testing. The next phase will involve phylogeography increasingly becoming the integrative and comparative multi-taxon endeavor that it was originally con

Influence of cumulative extreme climate risk on agricultural ecosystem resilience in the karst mountainous region of southwestern China.

Agricultural ecosystem resilience (AES) underpins food security and sustainable agricultural development. Using panel data for 60 prefecture-level administrative units in the karst mountainous region of southwestern China from 2005 to 2023, this study adopts a cumulative-disturbance perspective to construct a Cumulative Extreme Climate Risk (CECR) index and an AR(1)-based recovery-persistence indicator derived from first-order autoregressive coefficients of gross primary productivity (GPP) time series. The latter captures the short-term recovery dimension of AES. Within an analytical framework

From individual coping to collective resilience: reframing mental health responses to global crises through geopsychiatry.

Global crises are reshaping the conditions under which mental health is produced, threatened, protected, and restored. Pandemics, climate change, armed conflict, forced migration, political instability, economic insecurity, disasters, and digital disruption do not affect mental health only through individual stress reactions or discrete traumatic exposures. They also transform the social, territorial, institutional, ecological, and symbolic environments in which people interpret threat, seek support, access care, maintain hope, and imagine the future. This Conceptual Analysis reframes mental h

Influence of climate and heatwaves on dengue transmission in Sao Paulo and Natal, Brazil.

Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease, poses a significant public health challenge whose transmission dynamics are highly sensitive to climatic conditions. However, the effects of extreme weather events like heatwaves remain poorly understood. This study investigated the influence of climatic factors and heatwaves on dengue incidence in two key Brazilian hotspots: the subtropical megacity of São Paulo (Sao Paulo State) and the tropical coastal city of Natal (Rio Grande do Norte State). We analyzed weekly confirmed dengue cases and meteorological data (temperature, precipitation, heatwav

Livelihood diversification in managing catastrophic risks: evidence from flood-disaster regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan.

Pakistan's agricultural productivity is considered to be low despite several agriculture promotion policies. Such policies concentrate primarily on on-farm development and overlook rich prospects for off-farm diversification. Livelihood diversification of small-scale farmers plays a major role in reducing hunger and mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change. Therefore, this paper seeks to analyze livelihood diversification in managing catastrophic risks among rural farm households of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan. We have interviewed a total of 600 farm households through a st

Assessment and mitigation of tangible flood damages driven by climate change in a tropical city: Hat Yai Municipality, southern Thailand.

Climate change-induced floods in tropical urban areas have presented a serious global challenge because of failed conventional stormwater management practices. This research aims to develop a comprehensive methodological framework for flood damage estimation and mitigation, particularly in a tropical urban city. In this study, interdisciplinary fields were integrated through statistical downscaling, hydrologic-hydraulic modeling, and the development of flood damage curves. Relationships between tangible flood damage and flood-borne outbreak with flood depths were elucidated to predict future d

Potential distribution of dominant malaria vector species in tropical region under climate change scenarios.

Risk assessment regarding the distribution of malaria vectors and environmental variables underpinning their distribution under changing climates is crucial towards malaria control and eradication. On this basis, we used Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) Model to estimate the potential future distribution of major transmitters of malaria in Nigeria-Anopheles gambiae sensu lato and its siblings: Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto, and Anopheles arabiensis under low and high emissions scenarios. In the model, we used mosquito occurrence data sampled from 1900 to 2010 alongside land use and terrain variables

Visceral leishmaniasis cyclical trends in Bihar, India - implications for the elimination programme.

Background: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a vector-borne disease of public health importance in India, with the highest burden of disease in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. The disease is currently targeted for elimination (annual incidence to less than one per 10,000 population) using indoor residual spraying, active case detection and treatment. Historically the disease trend in India has been regarded as cyclical with case resurgence characteristically occurring every 15 years.  Understanding this pattern is essential if the VL elimination gains are to be sus

Therapeutic Alliance as a Mediator in the Absence of Post-Treatment Recidivism: A Study of Men Who Have Committed a Sexual Offense Against a Child.

The impact of motivation for change, group therapy climate, and therapeutic alliance on treatment success in men who have committed sexual offenses (MCSOs) has produced mixed results in previous studies, often studied independently or limited to treatment progression. Thus, the way these factors interact and influence post-treatment recidivism remains unclear. The present study addressed this gap by examining the interplay of these factors in a sample of 140 men who had committed sexual offenses against children, followed for a potential recidivism period of 5-8 years, using both repeated meas

Algal δ13C reveals climate changes during the Cambrian Explosion.

Carbon dioxide is a fundamental atmospheric component that regulates Earth's climate. However, atmospheric CO2 levels (pCO2) during the Cambrian Explosion remain poorly constrained. Here we report pCO2 variations reconstructed via carbon isotope signatures of algal fossils from eight fossil deposits across the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition (~553 to ~508 Ma). Results reveal an increase in pCO2 (±1σ) from ~3-9 to ~9-21 PAL during ~553-529 Ma, followed by a progressive decline to ~5-17 PAL and ~3-8 PAL at ~517 Ma and ~508 Ma, respectively. These temporal pCO2 changes coincide with shifts in marin

Insolation-driven northern Atlantic westerly wind patterns shaped the mid-Pleistocene transition in three phases.

The Mid-Pleistocene Transition ( ~ 1200-650 ka) marked a shift to 100-kyr glacial cycles, despite no significant change in insolation cyclicity. In this study, a high-resolution pollen record from the southwestern Iberian margin, combined with climate modeling, reveals a three-phase climate evolution linked to boreal summer insolation amplitude. In the early phase ( ~ 1200-930 ka), strong insolation minima shifted westerlies north, boosting ice accumulation, while maxima promoted melting, limiting ice growth. The middle phase ( ~ 930-790 ka) followed regoliths loss and featured weaker insolati

Shifting cyclone travel speed and its impact on global mangrove ecosystems.

Cyclones cause major damage to mangrove ecosystems globally. While this damage is projected to increase as storms intensify with climate change, the consequences of changes in cyclone attributes other than wind speed remain largely unexplored. Here, we show that shifts in cyclone travel speed may also dramatically alter the risks and mechanisms of damage. By developing an interpretable machine learning model trained with all cyclones recorded worldwide from 2001 to 2021, we find that fast-moving cyclones tend to be especially destructive on steeply sloping coasts, exacerbating physical damage,

Future North Atlantic tropical cyclone intensities in modified historical environments.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) have ranked as the deadliest and most financially crippling natural disasters in the United States. It is imperative to assess potential shifts in TC intensity within the paradigm of an evolving climate. In this study we apply a fixed-constraint storyline approach that holds storm tracks and initial conditions constant to probe future TC intensity in the North Atlantic Basin. First, we simulate 618 historical TC events using the Risk Analysis Framework for Tropical Cyclones (RAFT)'s deep-learning intensity model. Next, we apply warming signals derived from eight CMIP6 c

Risks of relying on uncertain carbon dioxide removal in climate policy.

Scenarios for reaching net-zero and other climate policy goals are increasingly featuring widespread adoption of novel carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies. However, these technologies currently represent only a small fraction of total CDR and may face various barriers to large-scale deployment. What are the consequences of planning for levels of CDR today that may differ from those realized in the future? Here, we combine decision analysis and a global integrated assessment model (GCAM) to quantify the climate, technology, economic, and equity outcomes of planning for high or low CDR ado

Integrating climate and physical constraints into assessments of net capture from direct air capture facilities.

Limiting climate change to targets enshrined in the Paris Agreement will require both deep decarbonization of the energy system and the deployment of carbon dioxide removal at potentially large scale (gigatons of annual removal). Nations are pursuing direct air capture to compensate for inertia in the expansion of low-carbon energy systems, decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, and address legacy emissions. Global assessments of this technology have failed to integrate factors that affect net capture and removal cost, including ambient conditions like temperature and humidity, as well as emission

Organic bromine compounds produced in sea ice in Antarctic winter.

During polar springtime, active bromine drives ozone, a greenhouse gas, to near-zero levels. Bromine production and emission in the polar regions have so far been assumed to require sunlight. Here, we report measurements of bromocarbons in sea ice, snow, and air during the Antarctic winter that reveal an unexpected new source of organic bromine to the atmosphere during periods of no sunlight. The results show that Antarctic winter sea ice provides 10 times more bromocarbons to the atmosphere than Southern Ocean waters, and substantially more than summer sea ice. The inclusion of these measurem
