Liquid-Phase CO2 Capture by a Nonaqueous Cooperative Absorption Mechanism.

Anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions remain a critical driver of climate change, necessitating the development of efficient carbon capture technologies. While aqueous amines are widely used, they suffer from high regeneration energies and solvent degradation. Here, we report a nonaqueous, cooperative CO2 absorption system using 1-methylpiperazine (MPZ) dissolved in a family of aromatic additives. Among these, the formulation with 2'-hydroxyacetophenone (2'HAP) exhibited the best overall performance, with a stepped sorption isotherm indicating cooperative absorption and a CO2:MPZ stoichiometr

A new pathway to enhance the oceanic carbon sink: inorganic carbonate precipitation driven by calcium-alkali coupling.

Anthropogenic CO2 emissions are intensifying climate change, creating an urgent need for scalable and efficient strategies to enhance the oceanic carbon sink. This study proposes and evaluates a new calcium-alkali coupling pathway in which the co-addition of Ca2+ and OH- promotes the conversion of seawater dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) into solid CaCO3. This process perturbs carbonate-system equilibrium and subsequently drives additional atmospheric CO2 uptake during system re-equilibration. Unlike conventional alkalinity-enhancement approaches that mainly retain absorbed CO2 as dissolved b

Temporal plasticity of thermal tolerance and cellular responses in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) during warm acclimation and subsequent cold acclimation to baseline temperature.

Global warming presents a substantial threat to aquatic ectotherms, including the economically significant Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Although warm acclimation can increase heat tolerance, little is known about the dynamic processes and cellular responses associated with the acquisition and loss of this increased tolerance. This study investigated changes in critical thermal maximum (CTmax), liver structure, hepatic antioxidant activity, and heat shock protein (HSP) expression in Atlantic salmon during prolonged warm acclimation followed by cold acclimation back to baseline temperature. Modeling the coupled PM2.5-Ozone system in China: chemical mechanisms, persistent model biases and future perspectives.

China's air quality governance has transitioned from separate particulate matter and ozone controls into a compound pollution era where particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) are linked through chemical interactions and increasingly co-occur during pollution episode. This review synthesizes the historical evolution, spatiotemporal characteristics, process-level mechanics, and modeling challenges of this coupled system. The mechanistic core relies on a shared precursor pool of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide, and ammonia, driving a non-linear "polluti

Atmospheric Reactivity and Environmental Implications of 2‑Propoxyethanol: Kinetic and Mechanistic Insights into Its Oxidation by OH, NO3, and Cl.

Hydroxyethers (HEs) are widely used oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs). Among them, 2-propoxyethanol (CH3CH2CH2OCH2CH2OH, 2-PE) is of particular interest due to its extensive use and the limited mechanistic information available regarding its atmospheric degradation. These characteristics place 2-PE as a compound of emerging environmental interest and motivate a detailed investigation of its reactivity with key atmospheric oxidants. This compound is commonly used as a solvent and emulsifying agent for hydrophobic substances, and it has been proposed as a biodiesel additive. Once rel

The Emergence of an Urable Earth: How Early Planetary Evolution Shaped the Chemical Window for Life's Origin.

Earth's early history provides the only natural record for evaluating how planetary evolution can generate environments capable of initiating life. Here we review early Earth evolution through the lens of urability: the time-dependent capacity of planetary environments to support prebiotic chemistry progressing toward compartmentalized, self-propagating, information-bearing systems. We argue that urability is not a single globally habitable state, but a transient overlap among several coupled dimensions: liquid water availability, permissive temperature, ocean pH and salinity, access to bioess

Deciphering wine fermentation through microbiota transplantation and synthetic yeast communities.

Microbial communities play a central role in fermentation dynamics and in wine quality, by driving the fermentation process and shaping the sensory and chemical profiles of wine. Consequently, although considerable attention has been given to inoculation strategies, including commercial starter cultures, pied-de-cuve, and spontaneous fermentation, the impact of transplanting an entire microbial community independently of its original matrix has not yet been evaluated. This study compared grape berry surface microbiota transplantation by berry rinsing with the traditional pied-de-cuve approach,

Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria for mitigating salinity stress in rice farming: a review of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta.

Salinity intrusion, exacerbated by climate change and anthropogenic activities, poses a significant global threat to agricultural productivity, particularly in coastal and deltaic regions. Rice, a staple crop critical for food security and economic stability in many developing nations, is highly susceptible to salt stress, which reduces yields and threatens livelihoods. In the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD), a key rice-producing region, recurrent drought-induced salinity events have caused substantial damage to agriculture, and the economic well-being of millions of residents. These events high

Exploring the relationship between physical activity, flood experience, eco-anxiety, and youth well-being in a changing climate.

Climate change threatens human health, but its psychological effects on young people remains relatively understudied. Conversely, ample evidence demonstrates that Physical Activity (PA) positively impacts the psychological well-being in young people. Thus, this cross-sectional study investigated whether PA moderates the impact of a large flood experience on the relationship between eco-anxiety and well-being in young people. One thousand twenty-one (N = 1.021) adolescents aged 9 to 16 years old (Mage = 12.35 ± 1.38) completed measures for PA frequency, flood experience, eco-anxiety, and psycho

Detecting mangrove seedlings from UAV imagery using deep learning for restoration monitoring.

Mangrove ecosystems are the focus of extensive conservation and restoration efforts due to their critical roles in coastal protection, carbon sequestration, and climate change mitigation. Detecting mangrove seedlings in remotely sensed imagery is essential for evaluating restoration success and prioritizing conservation areas. While seedling detection research has predominantly been conducted in agricultural settings, studies in natural environments remain limited, and no dedicated methods have been proposed for mangrove ecosystems. To address this gap, this study develops a model for detectin

Stacking Learning for Smart Proxy Modeling in CO2-WAG Optimization: A Techno-Economic Approach to Sustainable Enhanced Oil Recovery.

Climate change and greenhouse gas emissions are critical global challenges, driving the need for innovative solutions to reduce carbon footprints while meeting energy demands. This study addresses these challenges by optimizing the CO2-WAG (water-alternating gas) injection process, a technique that enhances oil recovery while sequestering carbon dioxide in oil reservoirs. The optimization framework integrates machine learning methods with the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) to simultaneously maximize cumulative oil production and CO2 sequestration, minimize water productio

Carbon Dioxide to Chemicals: CO2 Conversion Enhancement over Ni3Ga/Cu-ZSM‑5 Composite Material.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the major contributors toward global warming and climate change activities, and significant efforts are being taken to mitigate it in terms of reducing release, capturing, sequestering, and converting it to useful products. Among various decarbonization strategies, CO2 hydrogenation is considered a suitable technology, but the process suffers from lower conversion, low yield, low selectivity, and cost-effectiveness issues of the catalyst employed. The literature gap lies in the inability to correlate the catalyst complexity with chemical production. The aim of th

Ocean acidification changes the interspecific competition of Sargassum fusiforme and Ulva lactuca by regulating carbon and nitrogen metabolism.

Due to different response mechanisms of cultivated Sargassum fusiforme and its main epiphyte Ulva lactuca to ocean acidification caused by increased CO2 concentrations, the effects of U. lactuca on its host may be different at elevated CO2 concentrations. In this study, the effects of U. lactuca on the photosynthetic carbon assimilation process of S. fusiforme were studied under the condition of elevated CO2 concentration. The results showed that co-culture with U. lactuca significantly inhibited the growth, photosynthesis and nitrogen metabolism of S. fusiforme, up-regulated the expression of

Microplastics-driven reconfiguration of organic carbon fractions in lake sediments: mineralization and stabilization dynamics of biodegradable polymers.

While microplastics (MPs) are known to profoundly disrupt carbon cycling in lake sediments, the distinct mechanistic pathways by which biodegradable MPs reconfigure organic carbon fractions (OCFs) remain largely unknown. This study elucidates how poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and polyethylene (PE) MPs dynamically reconfigure OCFs and modulate carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions in anaerobic lake sediment microcosms. Incubation experiments showed that PBAT serves a dual role: it acts as a potent short-term carbon source that accelerates the release of bioavailable

From soil to health: advancing regenerative agriculture for improved food quality and nutrition security.

Industrial agriculture practices including herbicide-pesticide usage, synthetic fertilizer application, large-scale monocropping, and tillage contribute to increasing concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), exacerbating the effects of global climate change, damaging vital water resources via nutrient pollution and soil erosion, and significantly reducing biodiversity across ecosystems. Observed decadal declines in diet quality driven by industrial farming practices have led to a global health epidemic marked by increased micronutrient deficiency and malnutrition. Additionally, glob

The diversity of cellular systems involved in carbonate precipitation by Escherichia coli.

Climate change is increasing the need to limit levels of anthropogenic CO2 released into the atmosphere. One approach being investigated is to generate products based on microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), which can trap CO2 as CaCO3. We recently identified a novel MICP pathway in bacteria that is initiated by Ca2+ toxicity in cells, causing extracellular CO2 to be trapped as CO32- by Escherichia coli, although the yield of precipitated CaCO3 remained low (in the milligram range). In this work, we used the E. coli Keio gene knock-out library to identify 54 genes involved in MIC

Highly-Efficient Reusable [Silica@Iminophosphine-FeII] Hybrids for Hydrogen Production via Formic Acid and Formaldehyde Dehydrogenation.

The use of hybrids, developed by grafting homogeneous catalysts onto supporting materials, has already demonstrated significant potential in various catalytic processes. These systems combine the advantages of homogeneous catalysts, such as high activity and selectivity, with those of solid supports, including enhanced recyclability. Catalytic hydrogen (H2) production via dehydrogenation of C1 organic molecules targeting its use in fuel cells is a contemporary scientific issue directly connected with climate crisis. Here, Iminophospine hybrid [SiO2@benzNP] and its reduced analogue [SiO2@benzNH

Nitrogen-phosphorus stoichiometry and Cladophora growth affected by grass-sourced dissolved organic matter in the littoral zone of the Qinghai Lake, China.

Climate-driven lake expansion on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has triggered the extensive release of organic compounds through inundation-induced vegetation decomposition. This process generates substantial dissolved organic matter (DOM), potentially threatening alpine aquatic systems. In this work, the effects of grass-sourced DOM inputs on the nitrogen-to-phosphorus (N/P) ratio and Cladophora growth were studied. Field observation conducted in the lakeshore zone of Qinghai Lake showed that water column N/P ratios were closely related to Cladophora chlorophyll a (Chl.a) content. Microcosm experi

Drivers of anoxia in a eutrophic lagoon with clams farming (Sacca di Goro Lagoon, Italy): risk evaluation via multivariate statistics and timescales analysis.

The anoxia risk in a shallow coastal lagoon (Sacca di Goro (SG), Italy) experiencing multiple pressures (clam aquaculture, anthropogenic nutrient inputs, climate change) was assessed by combining timescales of anoxia onset, benthic nutrient turnover, horizontal and vertical transport, multivariate statistics, and Geographic Information System (GIS). The biogeochemical and transport timescales were obtained by experimental measurements and physical modeling. To this purpose, daily oxygen (O2) and nutrient fluxes [dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), ammonium (NH4+), dissolved reactive silica (
