Computer-assisted intraoperative navigation during skull base surgery.

PURPOSE: In patients with diseases of the cranial base, anatomical landmarks are often obliterated by tumor inflammatory diseases or previous surgery. The surgeon may fail to recognize important anatomical structures or tumor margins, increasing the morbidity of the surgery and downgrading the oncological outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ISG Viewing Wand is an intraoperative navigational device that uses a position-sensing articulated arm linked to a computer that allows the surgeon to correlate the anatomy of the patient with the computerized display of the reformatted images of preoperat

Intelligent real-time performance monitoring and quality prediction for batch/fed-batch cultivations.

Supervision of batch bioprocess operations in real-time during the progress of a batch run offers many advantages over end-of-batch quality control. Multivariate statistical techniques such as multiway partial least squares (MPLS) provide an efficient modeling and supervision framework. A new type of MPLS modeling technique that is especially suitable for online real-time process monitoring and the multivariate monitoring charts are presented. This online process monitoring technique is also extended to include predictions of end-of-batch quality measurements during the progress of a batch run

[Computer stimulation of endoscopic resection of the prostate].

The number of urologists in need of training is increasing whereas the number of resections of the prostate is falling. Patients are less and less willing to have their procedure serve for young residents to learn the technique of endoscopic resection of the prostate. Despite teachings and videoendoscopy, this procedure remains difficult to learn. We decided to develop a simulator for endoscopic resection after having seen the remarkable model of endoscopic simulation developed by French gastroenterologists and presented at the computer science workshop of the AFU symposium. The hypercard prog

Effects of probiotics on joint homeostasis and osteoarthritis: Development of microbe-gut-cartilage axis-on-a-chip.

Although emerging evidence implicates gut microbiome-cartilage cross-talk in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA), the most common joint disease, studying this microbe-gut-joint axis remains challenging due to limitations of animal models and conventional in vitro systems. Here, we report a microbe-gut-cartilage axis-on-a-chip (MGCAoC) that recreates tissue-specific microenvironments with oxygen gradients and physiological fluid shear. The computer simulation-optimized chip design generates an anoxic-oxic interface for the gut module and enables perfusion of probiotic metabolites to human c

High-Quality Depth-Adaptive Computer-Generated Hologram Using Depth-aware Plug-in Network.

Learning-based computer-generated holography (CGH) enables real-time hologram generation, but many existing methods are trained for a fixed propagation depth and require retraining when the target depth changes. Recent depth-adaptive approaches alleviate this limitation, yet often rely on specially designed architectures, limiting compatibility with existing CGH networks. We propose a depth-aware plug-in network that equips existing fixed-depth CGH models with depth-adaptive generation capability without modifying their backbones. The module performs intermediate feature modulation using a phy

DynamicBUS: restoring temporal dynamics from static ultrasound for improved breast cancer diagnosis.

The clinical practice of archiving static 2D images from dynamic breast ultrasound (BUS) examinations loses vital temporal information, limiting computer-aided diagnosis systems. We challenge this constraint by proposing a novel framework that computationally recovers lost temporal dynamics to enhance diagnostic accuracy. Our framework first synthesizes a BUS video from a static key frame using a purpose-built generative model. We introduce a key-frame conditioning strategy to ensure the anatomical fidelity of the lesion is preserved while generating useful dynamic cues. Subsequently, the high

Generative Enhancement of Noninvasive Datasets for Motor Brain-Computer Interface by Synthesizing Task-Relevant Neural Signals.

Despite the increasing adoption of deep neural networks (DNNs) in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), developing high-degree-of-freedom (DOF) systems capable of decoding continuous movements, such as limb kinematics, remains a significant challenge. This difficulty stems from limited availability of task-specific neural features within individual neural signal datasets. To overcome this, we proposed a generative adversarial network (GAN) framework to enrich training features within neural signal datasets. Specifically, we synthesized artificial neural signal waveforms of the primary motor cortex

Garlic-YOLO-DD: a lightweight object detection algorithm for garlic damage detection.

To address the challenge of applying garlic damage detection models in resource-constrained environments, this study proposes Garlic-YOLO-DD-a lightweight single-stage object detection algorithm based on YOLOv11n. This model effectively resolves the core issues of high computational complexity and excessive parameters in existing methods, achieving efficient and accurate garlic damage recognition suitable for real-time applications. Specifically, replacing conventional convolutional modules in the backbone network with the ADown module significantly reduces parameters and computational load. S

Foveated Retinotopy Improves Classification and Localization in Convolutional Neural Networks.

From falcons spotting prey to humans recognizing faces, the ability to rapidly process visual information depends on a foveated retinal organization that provides high-acuity central vision while preserving low-resolution peripheral vision. This organization is conserved along early visual pathways, yet remains under-explored in machine learning. Here, we examine the impact of embedding a foveated retinotopic transformation as a preprocessing layer on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for image classification. By applying a log-polar mapping to off-the-shelf models and retraining them, we a

A towing-flume with motion-tracking optical flow diagnostics.

Flows around objects undergoing unsteady motion are ubiquitous in both nature and engineering. However, the complexity of such objects' motions often constrains the reproduction of realistic unsteady flow scenarios and hinders the application of field-wide optical measurements within the confines of a laboratory. This study introduces a towing-flume facility equipped with a co-moving optical measurement system capable of speeds up to 1 m/s. In addition, a free stream can be generated using an integrated axial pump. The object's unsteady motions with multiple degrees of freedom are achieved via

The current status of foundation models in decoding inner speech from non-invasive brain signals: a mini review.

Inner speech (IS), or imagined speech without overt articulation, is a promising target for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) aimed at restoring communication in individuals with severe speech impairments, such as locked-in syndrome. Foundation models (FMs), typically trained using self-supervised learning (SSL) on large-scale datasets, offer new opportunities for learning transferable and robust representations from neural signals. This mini review provides an overview of FM-based approaches for IS decoding using non-invasive neuroimaging modalities, including functional magnetic resonance ima

Nanotoroids Self-Assembled from Bottlebrush Copolymers.

Toroids are cyclic, ring-shaped nanostructures with potential applications in topological materials, encapsulation, and separation. While nanotoroids naturally exist in biological systems (e.g., DNA toroids), their high-quality synthesis has been a long-standing challenge. Here, we report on the design of a bottlebrush copolymer that rapidly forms uniform nanotoroids (e.g., several minutes) in high yield and high fidelity through a robust solution-based self-assembly approach. The brushes are core-shell block copolypeptoids, which possess precisely tailored sequences and amphiphilicity and are

A Synergy of Convolutional Neural Networks for Sensor-Based EEG Brain-Computer Interfaces to Enhance Motor Imagery Classification.

Enhancing motor disability assessment and its imagery classification is a significant concern in contemporary medical practice, necessitating reliable solutions to improve patient outcomes. One promising avenue is the use of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), which establish a direct communication pathway between users and machines. This technology holds the potential to revolutionize human-machine interaction, especially for individuals diagnosed with motor disabilities. Despite this promise, extracting reliable control signals from noisy brain data remains a critical challenge. In this paper,

A dataset of study program availability in German higher education between 1971 and 1996.

Educational systems are dynamic. They shape human capital, technological and societal progress, and also economic growth. Higher education, in particular, fosters innovation, with varying fields of study contributing differently to this process. Yet, despite its importance, no dataset has previously documented the evolution of academic fields across higher education institutions in a specific country. Addressing this gap, we present the RWI-UNI-SUBJECTS1 dataset, the first extensive collection of study opportunities across German higher education institutions between 1971 and 1996. The dataset

Preliminary study of the upper limb with the use of ultrasound transmission imaging.

A biologically safe, noninvasive method for visualizing bone and soft tissue relationships has been developed recently. Termed the ultrasonic transmission imaging system, its advantages include visualization of soft tissues in real time while motion is underway. The image can be correlated to standard x-ray films, but since no ionizing radiation is involved, repeated risk-free visualization of extremities for either diagnostic assessment or biomechanical studies is permitted. Resolution of 1 mm and a depth of field of 8 mm are adequate for visualization of neurovascular bundles, tendons, ligam

Neural control meets biomechanics in the motor assessment of neurological disorders: a narrative review.

The emerging concept of "neurobiomechanics" embodies an integrative approach, bringing together insights from functional anatomy, the physiology of the musculoskeletal and central nervous systems, physics, and computer science. By examining human movement under normal, optimal, and pathological conditions, neurobiomechanics aims to unravel the intricate mechanisms driving motor function and dysfunction, offering a comprehensive perspective on disorders such as acquired brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases. In this narrative review, we sought to explore the "neurobiomechanics" as a poten

A Dual-Branch Framework With Prior Knowledge for Precise Segmentation of Lung Nodules in Challenging CT Scans.

Lung cancer is one of the deadliest cancers globally, and early diagnosis is crucial for patient survival. Pulmonary nodules are the main manifestation of early lung cancer, usually assessed using CT scans. Nowadays, computer-aided diagnostic systems are widely used to assist physicians in disease diagnosis. The accurate segmentation of pulmonary nodules is affected by internal heterogeneity and external data factors. In order to overcome the segmentation challenges of subtle, mixed, adhesion-type, benign, and uncertain categories of nodules, a new mixed manual feature network that enhances se
