Novel noninvasive techniques for studying renal function in man.

Renal artery stenosis is a major cause of renovascular hypertension in humans, and may lead to ischemic nephropathy and end-stage renal disease. The mechanisms responsible for the progressive renal functional and structural alterations have not been fully elucidated, partly because of the lack of reliable, noninvasive techniques capable of quantifying renal regional hemodynamics and function distal to a stenosis in the renal artery. Novel imaging tools now enable quantification of concurrent intrarenal (cortical and medullary) hemodynamics, segmental nephron dynamics (intratubular transit time

Artificial neural networks for the automated detection of trichloroethylene by passive Fourier transform infrared spectrometry.

Artificial neural networks are applied to the automated classification of trichloroethylene (TCE) signatures from passive Fourier transform infrared remote sensing interferogram data. Through the use of three data collection methods, a combination of laboratory and field data is acquired that allows the methodology to be evaluated under a variety of infrared background conditions and in the presence of potentially interfering compounds such as sulfur hexafluoride, methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, and ammonia. To maximize the computational efficiency of the network optimizati

Classification of tetraplegics through automatic movement evaluation.

The general problem of classification of functional movements in humans with spinal cord injuries requires the following questions to be answered: what are the essential kinematic parameters that we have to observe during the movement? Is it possible to estimate preserved motor skills based on kinematics? Which computational method for identification is suited to geometric feature analysis? To answer these questions we have developed the methodology which has two phases: (1) recordings of a series of specified arm movements; and (2) custom made software for graphical presentation of arm moveme

A system for three-dimensional shape measurement and its application in microtia ear reconstruction.

Microtia is one form of ear anomalies representing the defect of a partial or total loss of external ear. This paper describes new method of total auricular reconstruction which combines the use of tissue expander and the non-contact, 3-dimensional (3-D) shape measurement system. The anterolateral and posterior surface of the both sides of the ear of the patients were measured with the 3-D shape measurement system. The data from normal side was mirror-imaged electronically and transferred to the computer-controlled milling machine to create the life-sized, mirror-image wax model. These models

[Cerebral imaging and depressive disorder].

Cerebral imaging of depressive syndromes has been studied since the early eighties in search of organic or functional anomalies in the central nervous system. There are fewer studies than with schizophrenia. Computed tomography, scintiscan, positron emission tomography (PET) are being used in various depressive states. For methodological reasons, results with PET are only preliminary. EEG mapping, a new technique, has, above all, measured the abnormalities of organic brain syndromes, especially dementia, which has to be ruled out in the diagnosis of depression. CT scan has not substantiated an

Preventable anesthesia mishaps: a study of human factors.

A modified critical-incident analysis technique was used in a retrospective examination of the characteristics of human error and equipment failure in anesthetic practice. The objective was to uncover patterns of frequently occurring incidents that are in need of careful prospective investigation. Forty-seven interviews were conducted with staff and resident anesthesiologists at one urban teaching institution, and descriptions of 359 preventable incidents were obtained. Twenty-three categories of details from these descriptions were subjected to computer-aided analysis for trends and patterns.

Multi-metal co-exposure and type 2 diabetes: integrating biomonitoring evidence, inflammatory mechanisms, and a framework for future risk stratification.

Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 prevalence is still increasing around the world, and there is growing evidence of the role of environmental co-exposures to heavy metals-cadmium, lead, arsenic, mercury, and chromium-in glycaemia impairment. Contrarily to studies on single metal toxicology, real-life situations consist in exposure to mixtures of heavy metals through environmental, occupational and dietary pathways, especially in places like the Indo-Gangetic plain of India, characterized by the presence of geological arsenic pollution in association with metals exposure. This paper provides a narrative

Machine-Learning Interatomic Potentials Achieving CCSD(T) Accuracy for Systems with Extended Covalent Networks and van der Waals Interactions.

Machine-learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) enable large-scale atomistic simulations at moderate computational cost while retaining ab initio accuracy. In recent years, MLIPs trained on coupled-cluster data─particularly CCSD(T), which includes single, double, and perturbative triple excitations─have emerged as a promising route to achieve chemical accuracy (1 kcal/mol) beyond the limits of density functional theory (DFT) and to incorporate nonempirical van der Waals (vdW) interactions. Most existing approaches are, however, still not straightforwardly applicable for systems with extended c

Methodological optimization for eliciting robust median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials for realtime single trial applications.

Objective.Single-trial measurement of median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) with noninvasive electroencephalography (EEG) is challenging due to low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), limiting its use in real-time neurorehabilitation applications. We describe and evaluate methodological optimizations for eliciting reliable median nerve SEPs measurable in real time, with reduced reliance on post-processing.Methods.In twelve healthy participants, two sessions each, SEPs were assessed at three pulse widths (0.1, 0.5, 1 ms), at a low-frequency stimulation (0.5 Hz ± 10%), and at an intensity

Granger sensori-behavioral functional taxonomy of neuronal ensemble activity from two-photon calcium imaging data.

Understanding how neuronal populations interact to encode and transform sensory information is a fundamental challenge in computational neuroscience. Most existing studies, however, study neural encoding, behavioral readout, and functional connectivity as disjoint problems. Two-photon calcium imaging enables simultaneous recording of large neuronal ensembles in vivo, driven by diverse stimuli and eliciting distinct behaviors. However, extracting directional functional connectivity metrics as well as encoding and readout properties of neurons from such data remains difficult due to indirect and

A Refreshed Similarity-Based Upsampler for Direct High-Ratio Feature Upsampling.

Feature upsampling is a fundamental and indispensable ingredient of almost all current network structures for dense prediction tasks. Very recently, a popular similarity-based feature upsampling pipeline has been proposed, which utilizes a high-resolution (HR) feature as guidance to help upsample the low-resolution (LR) deep feature based on their local similarity. Albeit achieving promising performance, this pipeline has specific limitations in methodological designs: 1) HR query and LR key features are not well aligned in a controllable manner; 2) the similarity between query-key features is

A systematic review of the associations between aortic curvilinearity and preoperative abdominal aortic aneurysm outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Traditional assessment of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) progression has focused primarily on maximum transverse diameter. Emerging evidence, however, suggests that the metrics of other AAA geometric characteristics may enhance predictions of aneurysm growth and rupture risk. This systematic review aims to evaluate associations between curvilinearity metrics and AAA outcomes, while examining methodological variability within the literature. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched fr

The Fontan circulation, designed for managing patients with a single functional ventricle, presents challenges in long-term outcomes. Computational methods offer potential solutions, yet their application in cardiology practice remains largely unexplored. Our aim was to assess the ability of a patient-specific, closed-loop, reduced-order blood flow model to simulate pulsatile blood flow in the Fontan circulation. Using one-dimensional models, we simulated the aorta, superior and inferior venae cavae, and right and left pulmonary arteries, while lumping heart chambers and remaining vessels into
