Analysis of gene expression profiles of multiple skin diseases identifies a conserved signature of disrupted homeostasis.

Triggers of skin disease pathogenesis vary, but events associated with the elicitation of a lesion share many features in common. Our objective was to examine gene expression patterns in skin disease to develop a molecular signature of disruption of cutaneous homeostasis. Gene expression data from common inflammatory skin diseases (eg psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and acne) and a novel statistical algorithm were used to define a unifying molecular signature referred to as the "unhealthy skin signature" (USS). Using a pattern-matching algorithm, analysis of public data re

Coal tar, pine tar and sulfonated shale oil preparations: comparative activity, efficacy and safety.

BACKGROUND: Tar and sulfonated shale oil preparations are used in the treatment of a variety of inflammatory skin diseases, including psoriasis vulgaris; due to the high polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content of tars, a possible relationship with cancer in humans has been postulated. On the other hand, the purity of sulfonated shale oils concerning PAHs guarantees a good tolerability during dermatologic therapy. AIM: In this review, it is attempted to compare activity, efficacy and safety of coal tar, pine tar and sulfonated shale oil preparations which currently play a role in dermato

"Wash leather scrotum" (scrotal dermatitis): a treatable cause of male infertility.

A group of 16 male patients with infertility had dermatitis of the scrotum and groins giving lichenified oedematous skin; the resulting thickening and loss of rugosity produced a characteristic appearance that we have termed wash leather scrotum. Treatment of the dermatosis resulted in an improvement in sperm count and motility in most patients, and 5 couples produced one or more pregnancies.

Influence of age and severity of dermatitis on the percutaneous absorption of hydrocortisone in children.

The results of 55 4-h hydrocortisone absorption tests in 38 children with atopic or seborrhoeic dermatitis were analysed to evaluate the effect of age and severity of the dermatitis on percutaneous absorption of hydrocortisone. The children were divided into three groups on the basis of the severity of the dermatitis. The absorption of hydrocortisone caused a significantly higher mean rise of serum cortisol in 20 children with severe dermatitis (Group A) than in 17 children with moderate dermatitis (Group B). The mean post-application rise of serum cortisol in 18 children with mild dermatitis

Halomethasone (C 48.401-Ba) for the topical treatment of common dermatoses.

C 48.401-Ba cream, containing 0.05% halomethasone was compared in a double-blind between-patients trial with a cream containing 0.1% betamethasone valerate in forty-eight patients suffering from atopic dermatitis and in thirty-nine patients suffering from seborrhoeic dermatitis. A similar comparison was made with ointments containing the same concentration of active ingredient in forty-six patients suffering from atopic dermatitis. Both ointments were also compared in a within-patient double-blind trial in thirty patients suffering from psoriasis. The analysis of the results showed that for th

Coexistence of Malassezia Species and Microsporum canis in the Lesions of Adult with Tinea Capitis.

Tinea capitis, primarily caused by dermatophytes such as Trichophyton and Microsporum species, is a superficial fungal infection affecting the scalp and hair, commonly observed in prepubertal children but rare in adults. Here we report a unique case of an adult female with tinea capitis presenting as diffused alopecia and erythema inflammation on the scalp's apex, mimicking seborrheic dermatitis. Examination of the hair and scalp using fluorescence microscopy and fungal culture identified the presence of hyphae from Malassezia globosa, Malassezia furfur and Microsporum canis. The patient under
