Paracoccidioidomycosis-related hospitalization and mortality rates in the state of São Paulo, Brazil: A study using socioeconomic, demographic, and climatic predictors.

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is endemic in impoverished communities in Latin America. This study aimed to understand the impact of sociodemographic, economic, and climatic factors on the number of hospitalizations and deaths due to PCM in São Paulo (SP) state, Brazil. Data on 645 municipalities were collected from government databases between 2006 and 2020. The Spearman's correlations between sociodemographic variables (population density, Municipal Human Development Index, and number of public health facilities in the municipality) and PCM rates showed the strongest negative correlation coeff

The role of endoscopy in the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common disease that may cause a huge economic burden. Endoscopy is performed not only to rule out other organic diseases but also to diagnose reflux esophagitis or Barrett's esophagus. Non-erosive GERD (non-erosive reflux disease [NERD]) is called endoscopy-negative GERD; however, GERD-related findings could be obtained through histological assessment, image-enhanced endoscopy, and new endoscopic modalities in patients with NERD. Moreover, endoscopy is useful to stratify the risk for the development of GERD. In addition, endoscopic treatments have be

Nutritionally acquired immune deficiency syndromes (NAIDS): common but often not diagnosed early.

It has been the perception in some pacific island countries that the textbook presentation of kwashiorkor has decreased in incidence possibly due to improved public health services and economic development of the country. However, the diagnosis and treatment is nonetheless crucial to child survival. This paper discusses the clinical courses of 2 children with kwashiorkor whose presentation were not of that taught to medical students or even junior doctors. Their presentation together with their subsequent nutritionally acquired immune deficiency syndrome (NAIDS) is illustrated to raise awarene…

[Primary prevention-psychosocial aspects].

Psychosocial risk factors like low socio-economic status, social isolation and lack of social support, chronic work or family stress, depression, and hostility contribute significantly to the development and adverse outcome of coronary heart disease (CHD). The prevention of CHD should therefore include screening for psychosocial risk factors and adequate interventions. Methods to assess psychosocial risk factors are single item questions to be included in the cardiologist clinical interview and/or standardized questionnaires. Recommended interventions include an appropriate physician-patient i

Emerging infectious diseases: the Bunyaviridae.

The Bunyaviridae are a large group of viruses that infect a diversity of arthropod vectors and animal hosts. They have a worldwide distribution and can be the cause of human illness ranging from mild asymptomatic infection to hemorrhagic fever and fatal encephalitis. The growth of the human population, the expansion of agricultural and economic development, climatic changes, and the speed and frequency of global transportation all favor the emergence of bunyaviruses and other arthropod borne viruses. International monitoring of the Bunyaviridae and a greater understanding of their ecology and …

Emerging or re-emerging bacterial zoonotic diseases: bartonellosis, leptospirosis, Lyme borreliosis, plague.

There are a whole series of emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases present in the Northern Hemisphere and the author describes four of them, namely, bartonellosis, leptospirosis, Lyme borreliosis and plague. Reasons for the emergence or re-emergence of such diseases are not clear, but factors such as human demographics, economic development and land use, international travel and commerce, and microbial adaptation, are thought to be involved. Control of emerging and re-emerging diseases has become a major challenge for the international community and it is important to disseminate informati…

Identification of a mutation in porcine ryanodine receptor associated with malignant hyperthermia.

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) causes neurological, liver, and kidney damage and death in humans and major economic losses in the swine industry. A single point mutation in the porcine gene for the skeletal muscle ryanodine receptor (ryr1) was found to be correlated with MH in five major breeds of lean, heavily muscled swine. Haplotyping suggests that the mutation in all five breeds has a common origin. Assuming that this is the causal mutation for MH, the development of a noninvasive diagnostic test will provide the basis for elimination of the MH gene or its controlled inclusion in swine breedi

[Gastroduodenal ulcer. New therapy and new clinical practice?].

Duodenal, prepyloric, and gastric ulcers are based on different pathophysiological processes. The achievements obtained from therapeutic medication, using H2-blockers, have reduced indications for surgical treatment, primarily for duodenal ulcer. Surgery has continued to be required for failure of medicamentous therapy, recurrence, development of intercurrent diseases calling for corticoid or anti-coagulant treatment, patients above 55 years of age with haemorrhage, occurrence of severe side effects, and, occasionally, for economic reasons. Optional methods are left-side selective vagotomy for

The potential global health impact and cost-effectiveness of next-generation influenza vaccines: A modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Next-generation influenza vaccines (NGIVs) are in development and have the potential to achieve substantial reductions in influenza burden, with resulting widespread health and economic benefits. The prices at which their market can be sustained and which vaccination strategies may maximise health impact and cost-effectiveness, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, are unknown, yet such an understanding could provide a valuable tool for vaccine development and investment decision-making at a national and global level. To address this evidence gap, we projected the healt

Economic Model Predictive Control for optimal struvite recovery.

Resource recovery from municipal wastewater has been a prime focus for a decade. Although several recovery processes already exist in the market today, the high cost of material, inherent disturbance in the influent quality, lack of real time monitoring of critical parameters, and lack of a robust automation system may result in suboptimal performance. This work attempts to construct a model based predictive control for optimal operation of a struvite recovery unit in a full scale WRRF. A multi-parameter based predictive control has been developed by implementing an Economic Model Predictive C

Relaxin receptor-like proteins in Scylla paramamosain: Two distinct types and their roles in ovarian development.

Scylla paramamosain, a vital marine economic crab species along the southeast coast of China, has been insufficiently studied regarding its reproductive regulation. Relaxin and its receptors play crucial roles in regulating animal reproductive processes. However, their functions and mechanisms of action in crustaceans remain unclear. In this study, two relaxin receptor-like proteins genes (SpRRLP) from S. paramamosain were cloned and designated as SpRRLP1 and SpRRLP2. Sequence analysis revealed that both belong to the C1 type of leucine-rich repeat type G-protein coupled receptors (LGR), with

Small-molecule electrooxidation catalysts for high energy-saving level hybrid water electrolysis.

Unlike conventional water electrolysis (WE), hybrid water electrolysis (HWE) enables more energy-saving hydrogen production by replacing anodic oxygen evolution with the thermodynamically favorable oxidation of small molecules. Recent efforts have reduced the operating voltage of HWE by exploring substrates with low oxidation potentials and developing efficient electrocatalysts. Nevertheless, limited attention has been paid to actual energy savings and techno-economic viability. Specifically, the types and classification of high-energy-saving hybrid electrolyzers remain unclear, and recent adv

Economic losses due to brucellosis and neosporosis abortions in Argentine beef herds.

In Argentina, diseases that cause abortion pose a considerable threat to beef herds due to their economic implications. Previous research has shown variable results regarding their impact, primarily due to the different time points at which they were evaluated, leading to outdated findings, and due to a not accurate methodology. This study aims to quantify the economic losses due to abortions caused by brucellosis and neosporosis in Argentine beef herds. To calculate these losses, the cost per abortion was multiplied by the total number of abortions. The cost per abortion was determined using

Economic evaluations of health care interventions in oropharyngeal dysphagia after stroke: protocol for a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) affects 40-81% of patients after stroke. A recent systematic review on the costs of OD and its main complications showed higher acute and long-term costs for those patients who developed OD, malnutrition and pneumonia after stroke. These results suggest that appropriate management of post-stroke OD could reduce clinical complications and costs. The purpose of this systematic review is to assess the available literature for healthcare interventions that are efficient or cost-effective in the management of OD. METHODS: A systematic review on
