Determination of the modulus of elasticity of bone material by an acoustical approach at the forearm distinguishes women with and without vertebral fractures independent of bone mineral density.

The modulus of elasticity is a parameter characterizing fracture stability of bone independent of bone mineral density. Measurement of acoustical properties of the forearm by determination of the resonant frequency of the ulna in longitudinal direction as a function of sound transmission velocity after adjustment of the measuring result by ulna length yields information about the modulus of elasticity. It was the aim of this study to investigate whether this parameter may distinguish between subjects with and without vertebral fractures independent of bone mineral density. Fifty females (61.1 …

Response-surface optimization of air-dried alkali-treated structural bamboo for enhanced flexural strength, elastic modulus and creep resistance.

Bamboo is a promising bio-based construction material owing to its rapid renewability, lightweight characteristics, and high specific strength. However, its application in load-bearing structures is still limited by inadequate mechanical performance and creep deformation under sustained loading. Herein, an air-dried alkali treatment strategy without hot pressing was developed to regulate the lignocellulosic macromolecular network and improve the mechanical properties and creep resistance performance of bamboo. Five alkaline solutions combined with air drying were used to select the optimal alk

Two-laboratory comparability of apparent elastic modulus measurements in bovine lumbar vertebral trabecular bone under a standardized compression protocol.

Interlaboratory comparability of trabecular bone mechanical properties is important for experimental biomechanics and density-based material assignment, but destructive testing prevents repeated measurement of the same specimen. We evaluated the comparability of apparent elastic modulus measurements obtained through two laboratory pathways using adjacent bovine lumbar vertebral trabecular bone specimens and a standardized compression protocol. Forty-eight specimens from six animals formed 24 adjacent pairs (12 longitudinal, 12 transverse). Specimens had an aspect ratio close to five, were kept

Prognostic Utility of Pulmonary Arterial Elastance in Patients With ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Classified as Killip Classes 3-4.

BACKGROUND: Invasive hemodynamic assessment is critical in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) classified as Killip classes 3-4. However, the prognostic utility of pulmonary arterial elastance (PaE) remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively analyzed 145 consecutive patients with STEMI classified as Killip classes 3-4 undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention, all with complete pulmonary artery catheter data. PaE was calculated as systolic pulmonary artery pressure divided by stroke volume. In total, 27 patients died in hospital (18.6%),

The vertical, fore-and-aft, and lateral seat-to-head transmissibility on an elastic seat: influences of the cross-axis coupling, the vibration magnitude and the backrest.

Vibration transmitted from the cushion to the human head can affect riding comfort and even induce motion sickness during the vertical excitation. Although seat-to-head transmissibility has been investigated using a rigid seat, only biodynamic properties of seated occupant were considered and influence of the seating dynamics was neglected. In this study, the in-line and cross-axis seat-to-head transmissibilities of 14 seated occupants were investigated on an elastic seat with the vertical excitation (1-15 Hz) of three different excitation magnitudes (0.2, 0.4, 0.8 m/s2 r.m.s.). The influence

Elastic stable intramedullary nailing vs. hip spica casting management for postoperative femoral fractures in children with developmental dysplasia of the hip.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal femoral osteotomy (PFO) produces excellent clinical results for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in children. Femur fractures in the hips of children after PFO have been reported, and both elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) and hip spica casting have been used to treat these fractures. Usually, decision-making between ESIN and hip spica casting has been based on the fracture pattern and age. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes of elastic stable intramedullary nailing with those of hip spica casting management for postoperative femoral

Submuscular Plating, Titanium Elastic Nailing, and External Fixation for Pediatric Femoral Shaft Fractures: A Comparative Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Pediatric femoral shaft fractures are commonly treated with titanium elastic nailing (TENS), submuscular plating (SMP), or external fixation (EF), but the optimal fixation strategy remains controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared perioperative metrics, union, complications, and functional outcomes between SMP, TENS, and EF in skeletally immature patients. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Google Scholar (up to November 2025) identified comparative studies of diaphyseal pediatric femoral shaft fractures treated with at least two of the

Searches for Light Dark Matter and Evidence of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering of Solar Neutrinos with the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) Experiment.

We present searches for light dark matter (DM) with masses 3-9  GeV/c^{2} in the presence of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS) from ^{8}B solar neutrinos with the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment. This analysis uses a 5.7 tonne-yr exposure with data collected between March 2023 and April 2025. In an energy range spanning 1-6 keV, we report no significant excess of events attributable to dark matter nuclear recoils, but we observe a significant signal from ^{8}B CEνNS interactions that is consistent with expectation. We set world-leading limits on spin-independent and spin-dependent-neu

Custom-Made Compression Elastic Garments for Vascular Anomalies and Edematous Disorders: Objective and Subjective Outcomes in a Multi-Institutional Clinical Series.

Background/Objectives: Compression therapy serves as first-line conservative management for low-flow vascular malformations and Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome (KTS). However, ready-made garments are frequently ill-fitting for patients with limb overgrowth, asymmetry, deformity, or heterogeneous body habitus. Custom-made compression elastic garments offer an individualized solution, yet systematic data across diverse clinical entities remain scarce. This study evaluated objective and subjective outcomes of custom-made compression garments across vascular anomalies and edematous disorders in a multi

A prospective cohort study testing whether oral cavity mucosal tissue variability influences elastic scattering spectroscopy (ESS) measures.

OBJECTIVE: Elastic Scattering Spectroscopy (ESS) has been shown to accurately discriminate between benign and malignant tissue in the oral cavity, which makes it a promising technology to assist with intraoperative oral cancer margin guidance. However, some spectroscopy-based technologies are influenced by locoregional histopathological differences, which can influence diagnostic accuracy and data acquisition procedures. The objective of this study was to assess the extent to which ESS spectral readings of mucosal tissue varied between different anatomic regions of the oral cavity in a cohort

Outcomes of Iso-Elastic Acetabular Cup in Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty with 5-Year Minimum Follow-Up: A Systematic Review.

Background: Long-term survivorship in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is influenced by implant stability and stress distribution to surrounding bone. Isoelastic acetabular components are monoblock polyethylene cups with a low elastic modulus, which were developed to reduce stress shielding and enhance periacetabular bone preservation. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the mid- to long-term clinical outcomes, wear rate, and survivorship of isoelastic cups in primary THA with a minimum follow-up of five years. Materials and methods: A systematic literature search was performed in April 2025

Incidence and risk factors of alveolar bone dehiscences and fenestrations after clear aligner therapy with Class II elastics: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: In clear aligner therapy (CAT), Class II elastics are widely used to reinforce the anchorage during the distalization of upper molars, however, their association with alveolar bone dehiscences (ABDs) and fenestrations (ABFs) in the anterior region remains unclear. The aim of this research is to assess the incidence of ABDs/ABFs in adult patients undergoing non-extraction CAT with Class II elastics, and to explore risk factors associated with the occurrence of ABDs/ABFs. METHODS: Thirty adult patients with Class II malocclusion who underwent non-extraction CAT with Class II interma

Low Elastic Modulus Titanium Alloy Pedicle Screws Reduce the Risk of Screw Loosening: A Pre-Clinical Biosafety and Biomechanical Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The exacerbation of interfacial stiffness differences can lead to localized stress concentration and an increased incidence of pedicle screw loosening. Consequently, the etiology behind the higher occurrence of screw loosening in osteoporotic patients stems not only from a reduction in bone strength but also from a progressive decline in bone elastic modulus. In this context, we hypothesize that constructing pedicle screws using materials with low elastic modulus may help mitigate stiffness discrepancies at the bone-screw interface, potentially serving as an alternative biomechanic

Non-invasive pressure-volume loop derived temporal elastance, contractility, and efficiency indices for assessing Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients.

Ejection fraction is commonly used to assess Duchenne muscular dystrophy-associated cardiomyopathy (DMDAC), but it may remain normal (wrongly) despite significant myocardial dysfunction in patients. Therefore, better indicators of myocardial dysfunction are needed for longitudinal (with time) assessment and treatment of DMDAC patients. This study evaluates non-invasive LV PV loop-derived elastance, contractility and efficiency in relation to EF for patients developing DMDAC. The current retrospective study includes thirty DMDAC patients who underwent two serial CMR imaging from 2014 to 2023. T

Enhanced Optic Nerve Expansion and Altered Ultrastructure of Elastic Fibers Induced by Lysyl Oxidase Inhibition in a Mouse Model of Marfan Syndrome.

Two major constituents of exfoliation material, fibrillin-1 and lysyl oxidase-like 1 (encoded by FBN1 and LOXL1), are implicated in exfoliation glaucoma, yet their individual contributions to ocular phenotype are minor. To test the hypothesis that a combination of FBN1 mutation and LOXL1 deficiency exacerbates ocular phenotypes, the pan-lysyl oxidase inhibitor β-aminopropionitrile (BAPN) was used to treat adult wild-type (WT) mice and mice heterozygous for a missense mutation in Fbn1 (Fbn1C1041G/+) for 8 weeks and their eyes were examined.
