We present two cases of systemic photosensitivity due to naproxen that presented as photodistributed erythema multiforme (EM) and lichenoid photodermatitis (LP). Although naproxen is a commonly used nonsteroidal antinflammatory drug and has the capacity of causing systemic photosensitivity, there are very few reports about it in the literature. The Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a serious form of erythema multiforme, an acute inflammatory pathology with an autoimmune pathogenesis. Its etiology is unknown, although it is thought to have multifactorial causes; nonetheless, many drugs are thought to induce such an immune response. The clinical symptomatology is mainly muco-cutaneous, with a remarkable oral involvement. The authors describe here a case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome involving the ocular, oral, and genital areas, presumably induced by the bromhexine administered to the patient for a viral syndrome.

We present the case of a woman in her 70s who was diagnosed with rheumatoid vasculitis (RV) after initially presenting with systemic joint pain and erythema. RV, a rare complication of rheumatoid arthritis, involves inflammation of blood vessels, leading to various skin manifestations. The patient's complaints included fever, generalized joint pain, and skin manifestations that initially resembled erythema multiforme. We have observed 9 male patients with a generalized rash following the topical use of an over-the-counter antiparasitic powder (MOM), containing ammoniated (11.2 g%) and metallic (4.2 g%) mercury, to treat phthiriasis (lice infestation). Primary and intensely erythemato-exudative lesions of the pubic region and genitals were associated with inverted erythema of the upper inner thighs and, in severe cases, involvement of the face, neck, trunk and major flexures. Congenital syphilis occurs when Treponema pallidum crosses the placenta during pregnancy or from contact with an infectious genital lesion during delivery. Cutaneous manifestations of congenital syphilis are relatively common, occurring in approximately 30% to 70% of patients. Maculopapular lesions, vesiculobullous lesions, condylomata lata lesions, annular lesions, and erythema multiforme-like targetoid lesions have been reported. We report on a premature newborn with congenital syphilis who presented with generalized bullous and pustular eruption and desquamation at birth.

Characteristic features of acute annular urticaria in 34 infants and small children were large, erythematous annular and polycyclic lesions with violaceous centers, eyelid, hand, and foot edema, absence of angioedema of the airway, absence of pruritus, spontaneous resolution in 8 to 10 days, and frequent history of furazolidone medication for diarrhea. Nondermatologists often misdiagnose acute annular urticaria as erythema multiforme and unnecessarily overtreat patients. The differential diagnosis with other conditions presenting with annular lesions in children is discussed.

This report describes dyspnea, cough, erythema multiforme, and a diffuse pulmonary interstitial infiltrate associated with eosinophilic alveolitis in a 67-year-old man taking diclofenac sodium (Voltaren). Onset of these pulmonary abnormalities after beginning diclofenac therapy implicates this drug, which, to our knowledge, has not been described previously to cause eosinophilic pneumonitis. The current report expands the spectrum of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced eosinophilic pneumonitis and reviews available experience with other implicated non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a symptom complex characterized by a devastating skin disorder, erosive involvement of two or more mucous membranes, and severe constitutional symptoms. The disorder shares features with erythema multiforme and is thought to be an expression of the syndrome. Although a wide range of etiologic factors have been incriminated in TEN, only a few cases have provided convincing evidence of a direct causal link. Most cases of TEN have been associated with drug administration.

The aim of the study was to compare laser devices "Optodan" and portative laser "Baure" in complex treatment of oral cavity mucous membrane diseases. Levamisole is an antihelmintic drug that stimulates antibodies formation increasing both T response, and neutrophilic response, and quimiotaxis. It is used in dermatology for the treatment of plane warts, erythema multiforme, aphtous ulcers and, with prednisone, in lichen planus. With prolonged use this drug has been implicated in adverse dermatological reactions as lichenoid eruptions, ulcers and vasculitis. We present a 9-years old girl who developed a cutaneous eruption and a reverse leucoencephalopathy with a short treatment but high doses of the drug.

Human orf is usually considered a rare disease caused by a virus belonging to the paravaccinia subgroup of pox viruses and transmitted to man from sheep and goats. This paper presents 119 new human cases with epidemiological, clinical, histopathological and ultrastructural findings. Erythema multiforme was found to be a common complication of human orf. Other complications tended to be caused by overtreatment. Electron microscopy of negatively stained suspensions from lesions was found to be the best and most rapid diagnostic method available.

Erythema exsudativum multiforme (EEM) is a sudden inflammation of the skin and/or mucous membranes (minor or major form). It typically affects healthy, young, male adults. The lips are affected first or sometimes exclusively. The buccal mucosa, the buccal gingiva and the tongue can also be affected. Less frequently, intraoral lesions are also found on the hard and soft palate and the floor of the mouth. Patients report severe pain when eating, swallowing and speaking. The clinical picture is usually sufficient diagnostic evidence and no histopathological examination is required.

A 75-year-old Caucasian female with a previous history of cutaneous lichen planus (LP) developed vesiculae and blisters on the lip. This special variant of oral LP is very rare and has to be distinguished from LP pemphigoides, bullous pemphigoid, pemphigus vulgaris, erythema multiforme, and herpes simplex virus infection. To date, there are only few reports on bullous oral LP on the lower lip. Although treatment is difficult, we successfully applied a topical combination of tretinoin 0.025% and triamcinolone 0.1%.

Rowell's syndrome is believed to be a distinct and rare clinical entity originally described as lupus erythematosus associated with erythema multiforme-like lesions with immunological findings of speckled antinuclear antibodies, anti-La antibodies and a positive test for rheumatoid factor. We report two additional patients with Rowell's syndrome and review all the diagnostic criteria found in the literature. In view of the inconsistent findings of some of the diagnostic features, we propose that major and minor criteria be used to diagnose Rowell's syndrome.
