Augmented machine learning for sewage quality assessment with limited data.

Physical, chemical, and biological processes within sewers significantly alter sewage composition during conveyance. This leads to the formation of sulfide and methane-compounds that contribute to sewer corrosion and greenhouse gas emissions. Reliable modeling of these compounds is essential for effective sewer management, but the development of machine learning (ML) models is hindered by differences in data accessibility and sampling frequencies of water quality variables. Here we present a mechanistically enhanced hybrid (ME-Hybrid) model that combines mechanistic modeling with data-driven a

Rainstorms drive the carbon dioxide emissions during the algae-growing season in a large eutrophic lake.

Lakes are sources of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), contributing to global climate change. Temporal variations in lake CO2 emissions are pronounced, with algal growth and precipitation identified as important drivers. Eutrophic lakes often act as atmospheric CO2 sinks during the growing season. However, these lakes can also emit CO2 during the same period, a paradox that we hypothesize is driven by precipitation. This study tests this hypothesis and examines how rainstorms influence lake CO2 emissions. To investigate, seven buoys were deployed in eutrophic Lake Taihu and a major inflow rive

Association of volatile organic compound levels with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases in NHANES 2013-2016.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) represent a significant component of air pollution. However, studies evaluating the impact of VOC exposure on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have predominantly focused on single pollutant models. This study aims to comprehensively assess the relationship between multiple VOC exposures and COPD. A large cross-sectional study was conducted on 4983 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Four models, including weighted logistic regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS), weighted quantile sum regression (WQS), and the

Comparison of Machine Learning-based Approaches to Predict the Conversion to Alzheimer's Disease from Mild Cognitive Impairment.

In Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), identifying a high risk of conversion to Alzheimer's Disease Dementia (AD) is a primary goal for patient management. Machine Learning (ML) algorithms are widely employed to pursue data-driven diagnostic and prognostic goals. An agreement on the stability of these algorithms -when applied to different biomarkers and other conditions- is far from being reached. In this study, we compared the different prognostic performances of three supervised ML algorithms fed with multimodal biomarkers of MCI subjects obtained from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initi

Enhancing prediction of tooth caries using significant features and multi-model classifier.

BACKGROUND: Tooth decay, also known as dental caries, is a common oral health problem that requires early diagnosis and treatment to prevent further complications. It is a chronic disease that causes the gradual breakdown of the tooth's hard tissues, primarily due to the interaction of bacteria and dietary sugars. RESULTS: While numerous investigations have focused on addressing this issue using image-based datasets, the outcomes have revealed limitations in their effectiveness. In a novel approach, this study focuses on feature-based datasets, coupled with the strategic integration of Princi

Predicting wettability of mineral/CO2/brine systems via data-driven machine learning modeling: Implications for carbon geo-sequestration.

Effectively storing carbon dioxide (CO2) in geological formations synergizes with algal-based removal technology, enhancing carbon capture efficiency, leveraging biological processes for sustainable, long-term sequestration while aiding ecosystem restoration. On the other hand, geological carbon storage effectiveness depends on the interactions and wettability of rock, CO2, and brine. Rock wettability during storage determines the CO2/brine distribution, maximum storage capacity, and trapping potential. Due to the high CO2 reactivity and damage risk, an experimental assessment of the CO2 wetta

Gait characteristics in patients with distal radius fracture using an in-shoe inertial measurement system at various gait speeds.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures (DRF) commonly occur in early postmenopausal females as the first fragility fracture. Although the incidence of DRF in this set of patients may be related to a lower ability to control their balance and gait, the detailed gait characteristics of DRF patients have not been examined. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is it possible to identify the physical and gait features of DRF patients using in-shoe inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors at various gait speeds and to develop a machine learning (ML) algorithm to estimate patients with DRF using gait? METHODS: In this c

Instrument-free single-step direct estimation of the plasma glucose level from one drop of blood using smartphone-interfaced analytics on a paper strip.

We demonstrated an instrument-free miniaturized adaptation of the laboratory gold standard methodology for the direct estimation of plasma glucose from a drop of whole blood using a low-cost single-user-step paper-strip sensor interfaced with a smartphone. Unlike a majority of the existing glucose meters that use whole blood-based indirect sensing technologies, our direct adaptation of the gold-standard laboratory benchmark could eliminate the possibilities of cross interference with other analytes present in the whole blood by facilitating an in situ plasma separation, capillary flow and colo

Development and Evaluation of a Machine Learning Prediction Model for Small-for-Gestational-Age Births in Women Exposed to Radiation before Pregnancy.

Exposure to radiation has been associated with increased risk of delivering small-for-gestational-age (SGA) newborns. There are no tools to predict SGA newborns in pregnant women exposed to radiation before pregnancy. Here, we aimed to develop an array of machine learning (ML) models to predict SGA newborns in women exposed to radiation before pregnancy. Patients' data was obtained from the National Free Preconception Health Examination Project from 2010 to 2012. The data were randomly divided into a training dataset (n = 364) and a testing dataset (n = 91). Eight various ML models were compar
