The contribution of various factors to malnutrition, particularly stunting, may differ among areas and communities. This cross-sectional study aimed to estimate the level of malnutrition and identify factors associated with the high level of stunting in breast-fed infants aged 5-11 mo living in Dodota-Sire District, Ethiopia. Infants (n = 305) and their mothers were examined physically, and anthropometric and demographic data were collected. The content of zinc, calcium and copper in breast milk was measured, and data collected on the type, frequency of consumption, and time of introduction of

The causes of tall stature are numerous; genetic tall stature and constitutional tall stature are the most common. Diagnosis can usually be established from the history and physical examination. An estimation of bone age can help to confirm diagnosis and to determine the child's growth potential. No treatment is usually necessary. Hormonal therapy can be considered for individuals for whom the predicted height is excessive if the psychosocial and medical advantages outweigh the risks of treatment.

A study of the effects of malnutrition on the growth of the skull showed there is a correlation between intensity, duration and magnitude of malnutrition and growth of the skull. Clinical considerations are made on recovery from malnutrition which leads to a parallel recovery in growth of the skull.

The first case of germinal cell tumor of the testis in a patient with congenital total hemihypertrophy is reported. The literature is discussed with emphasis placed on the frequent association of hemihypertrophy with oncogenesis and teratogenesis. We conclude that because of the high incidence of malignancy in the undescended testis prophylactic orchiectomy should be considered in a patient with hemihypertrophy and cryptorchidism.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), a potentially disabling hip disorder, occurs primarily during the pubertal growth spurt. It has been reported in association with pituitary gigantism, growth hormone deficiency, hypothyroidism, hypogonadism, and panhypopituitarism. We estimated the frequency of SCFE among children with growth hormone deficiency (treated or untreated) and compared it with the reported frequency of SCFE among Connecticut residents under 25 years of age. Based on this comparison, the risk of developing SCFE is significantly greater in growth hormone-deficient children tha

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Connective tissue growth factor is a recently described mitogenic protein implicated in a variety of fibrotic disorders. Connective tissue growth factor may be a downstream mediator of the pro-fibrotic and mitogenic actions of transforming growth factor-beta, promoting extracellular matrix deposition and fibrogenesis. As transforming growth factor-beta is considered important to the pathogenesis of hepatic fibrosis, we examined the possible contribution of connective tissue growth factor to this process.
METHODS: Connective tissue growth factor expression was examined in norm

Nutritional management of patients who have urea cycle disorders is one of the most challenging tasks in clinical nutrition. The degree to which protein intake should be restricted in urea cycle disorders requires complex calculations which depend on many variables such as specific enzyme defect, age-related growth rate, current health status, level of physical activity, amount of free amino acids administered, energy intake, residual urea cycle function, family lifestyle, use of nitrogen-scavenging medications, and the patient's eating behaviors. This paper presents two case histories and a s

The features of the psychovegetative status in patients with functional disorders of the esophagus and stomach (FD) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are investigated. The methods included clinical, instrumental and psychometric examination. The patients of both groups had similar vegetative abnormalities and a tendency towards the growth of depression and anxiety parameters, did not differ in psychosocial factors, and had a wide range of psychovegetative abnormalities (PA). Lump in the throat, heartburn, epigastralgia (p < 0.01), depression, actual anxiety, alexitymia and vegetative

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a monogenic multisystem disorder. Endocrine complications of CF are common and include diabetes, growth disorders, and bone disease among others. CF endocrinopathies may be influenced by 2 classes of genetic factors: (1) disease-causing cystic fibrosis transmembrane receptor (CFTR) variants that determine the level of CFTR dysfunction, and (2) variants in other genes throughout the genome known as genetic modifiers. This review highlights the impact of these genetic factors on selected endocrine manifestations of CF. CF-related diabetes (CFRD): CFRD is dependent on both…

PURPOSE: To investigate correlations between adenohypophysis volume (aPV) quantified by 3D CUBE T1 MRI, height, and peak GH levels (GH max), and evaluate its clinical utility.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 380 children (3-12 years) old with suspected growth and development disorders enrolled from May 2020 to July 2022. All of them underwent 3.0T pituitary MRI with 3D CUBE T1WI, serological testing, growth hormone stimulation testing, and aPV and peak GH levels were also measured. Pearson and partial correlation analysis assessed relationships between aPV, height, and peak GH.
RESULTS: St

Corneal disease is a leading cause of blindness globally, and is commonly associated with corneal neovascularization, which results in the loss of optical clarity and visual impairment. A wide variety of factors contribute to abnormal growth of new blood vessels into the cornea, including contact lens wear, infectious keratitis, corneal graft rejection, inflammatory disorders and trauma. In each case, proangiogenic factors such as vascular endothelial, platelet-derived, and fibroblast growth factors fuel new blood vessel growth and proliferation. Topical corticosteroids are a front-line treatm

INTRODUCTION: Achondroplasia (Ach), the most common form of short-limb short stature, and related disorders are caused by constitutively active point mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene. Recent studies have provided a large body of evidence for the role of the proliferation and differentiation of chondrocytes in these disorders. Furthermore, a G380R mutation in FGFR3 (FGFR3(Ach)), which results in achondroplasia, induces apoptosis in the chondrogenic cell line ATDC5. This is associated with a decrease in the expression of PTHrP, which shares the same receptor with

PURPOSE: To determine whether pterygium is a disorder of abnormal growth by examining the expression of the p53 gene in the conjunctiva of patients with pterygium.
METHODS: Immunostaining for abnormal expression of p53 was performed using mouse monoclonal antibody to human p53, pAb 240, on six eyes with primary pterygium and two eyes with recurrent pterygium.
RESULTS: In three of the eight eyes with pterygium, specimens were positive for abnormal expression in the epithelium of the pterygium and in the superior bulbar conjunctiva.
CONCLUSION: Abnormal p53 expression in the epithelium of pri

In this article, we will review common pituitary disorders. There are 6 hormones secreted by the anterior pituitary gland: thyroid-stimulating hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, growth hormone, and prolactin. The posterior pituitary gland stores and releases the hormones made in the hypothalamus, oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone, based on the body's needs. This article will discuss the role of these hormones, conditions and symptoms that occur with elevated or reduced hormone levels, as well as the evaluation and treatment of these pituita
