Fast imaging of lenticulostriate arteries by high-resolution black-blood T1-weighted imaging with variable flip angles and acceleration by compressed sensitivity encoding.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the feasibility of using compressed sensitivity encoding (CS-SENSE) to accelerate high-resolution black-blood T1-weighted imaging with variable flip angles (T1WI-VFA) for efficient visualization and characterization of lenticulostriate arteries (LSAs) on a 3.0 T MR scanner. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five healthy volunteers and 18 patients with the cerebrovascular disease were prospectively enrolled. Healthy volunteers underwent T1WI-VFA sequences with different acceleration factors (AFs), including conventional sensitivity encoding (SENSE) AF = 3 and CS-SENSE AF

Magnetic resonance imaging of the medial extremity of the clavicle in forensic bone age determination: a new four-minute approach.

OBJECTIVES: The use of 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the clavicle in forensic bone age determination was prospectively examined and compared with plain radiography. METHODS: Four MRI sequences and three radiographs of 121 healthy subjects between 11 and 30 were studied by two observers. RESULTS: The number of images assessable for bone age determination was lower for plain radiography (PA: 68.7%; oblique: 97.5%) compared with MRI (VIBE: 99.0%). Concerning the subjective level of difficulty to assess bone age, the observers found it easier to assess bone age on MRI than on radiograph

Demons deformable registration for CBCT-guided procedures in the head and neck: convergence and accuracy.

PURPOSE: The accuracy and convergence behavior of a variant of the Demons deformable registration algorithm were investigated for use in cone-beam CT (CBCT)-guided procedures of the head and neck. Online use of deformable registration for guidance of therapeutic procedures such as image-guided surgery or radiation therapy places trade-offs on accuracy and computational expense. This work describes a convergence criterion for Demons registration developed to balance these demands; the accuracy of a multiscale Demons implementation using this convergence criterion is quantified in CBCT images of

Preoperative imaging in primary hyperparathyroidism. Role of thallium-technetium subtraction scintigraphy.

Primary hyperparathyroidism, although often silent clinically, may lead to significant morbidity if it remains untreated. In more than 95% of all cases the cause is a parathyroid adenoma or glandular hyperplasia. Regression of disease follows successful surgical excision of the abnormal parathyroid gland. Recurrent or persistent hyperparathyroidism is most commonly caused by solitary adenomas, which may have an ectopic location. Preoperative localization of lesions may improve postoperative cure rates and decrease morbidity. Thallium T1 201 chloride-technetium Tc 99m pertechnetate subtraction

Artifact-suppressed 3D retinal microvascular segmentation via multi-scale topology regulation.

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) enables non-invasive visualization of retinal microvasculature, and accurate 3D vessel segmentation is essential for quantifying biomarkers critical for early diagnosis and monitoring of diabetic retinopathy. However, reliable 3D OCTA segmentation is hindered by capillary invisibility, complex vascular topology, and motion artifacts, which compromise biomarker accuracy. Furthermore, the scarcity of manually annotated 3D OCTA microvascular data constrains methodological development. To address this challenge, we introduce our publicly accessible 3

LEFF-ViT: A locally enhanced vision transformer framework for accurate Alzheimer's Disease classification from brain MRI.

Early and accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is critical for effective disease management and progression delay. Researches have been done in past towards better study of Alzheimer's, but advancements in feature engineering-cum-learning methodologies have still created scope to overcome the limits of previous methods and achieve more accurate modelling and classification. Here, we propose a novel model, LEFF-ViT (Locally Enhanced Feedforward Vision Transformer), for AD classification along with a framework culminating an idea of using separate segmented brain subregions as a marked

Multi-View Hilbert Curve-Based Hierarchical Information Aggregation for Incomplete Multimodal Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis.

Timely identification of Alzheimer's disease (AD) benefits from combining neuroimaging, fluid biomarkers, and cognitive assessments, yet in practice one or more modalities are often unavailable due to various factors such as cost, patient compliance, and procedural risks. Furthermore, conventional convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures and even Transformer-based models struggle to efficiently capture both local and global dependencies, especially when dealing with high-dimensional and highly heterogeneous medical data. In this study, we introduce a novel hierarchical information aggr

Beyond complex architectures: a streamlined CNN pipeline for robust Alzheimer's disease classification from brain MRI.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Alzheimer's disease, a common type of dementia, gradually steals memories and impacts daily life as brain cells deteriorate. We explored how Artificial Intelligence (AI) could help spot early signs of Alzheimer's using MRI brain scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study focused on a deep learning approach, specifically a convolutional neural network (CNN), to distinguish between Alzheimer's, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and healthy individuals. We used two well-known datasets, OASIS and ADNI, for this work. After carefully preparing the ADNI data (which included 21,3

Low b-values in apparent diffusion coefficient calculations overestimate diffusion in rectal cancer.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), derived from diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI), is commonly calculated using a monoexponential model. However, there is no consensus on optimal b-value selection for ADC quantification in rectal cancer. This prospective observational study evaluated how varying b-value combinations influence ADC values. Patient/material and methods: DWI with seven b-values (b = 0, 25, 50, 100, 500, 1,000, and 1,300 s/mm2) was acquired from 23 rectal cancer patients in the OxyTarget study (NCT01816607) using a 1.5T Philips Achieva scanner. Two radiolo

Cluster Analysis of VERDICT MRI for Cancer Tissue Characterization in Neuroendocrine Tumors.

Diffusion MRI models accounting for varying diffusion times and high b-values, such as VERDICT, hold potential for non-invasively characterizing tumor tissue types, potentially enabling improved tumor grading, and treatment evaluation. Furthermore, cluster analysis can aid in identifying multidimensional patterns in the diffusion MRI (dMRI) data that are not apparent when analyzing individual parameters in isolation. The aim of this study was to evaluate how well cluster analysis of VERDICT parameters can be used for intratumor tissue characterization compared to ADC in a mouse model of human

DeepSPV: A deep learning pipeline for 3D spleen volume estimation from 2D ultrasound images.

Splenomegaly, the enlargement of the spleen, is an important clinical indicator for various associated medical conditions, such as sickle cell disease (SCD). Spleen length measured from 2D ultrasound is the most widely used metric for characterising spleen size. However, it is still considered a surrogate measure, and spleen volume remains the gold standard for assessing spleen size. Accurate spleen volume measurement typically requires 3D imaging modalities, such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, but these are not widely available, especially in the Global South which has

Artificial Intelligence in Adrenal Imaging.

Adrenal lesions are common, occurring in approximately 5% of the population. Although the vast majority are benign, it can be challenging to differentiate clinically significant from clinically insignificant adrenal lesions given overlap in imaging features. Artificial intelligence (AI) may be able to aid radiologists in identifying adrenal masses and diagnosing their etiology. This review defines commonly used terminology in AI and summarizes AI based techniques for adrenal gland segmentation, adrenal lesion detection, and lesion characterization.

Quiet Diffusion-weighted MR Imaging of the Brain for Pediatric Patients with Moyamoya Disease.

PURPOSE: Diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) is an essential sequence for evaluating pediatric patients with moyamoya disease (MMD); however, acoustic noise associated with DWI may lead to motion artifact. Compared with conventional DWI (cDWI), quiet DWI (qDWI) is considered less noisy and able to keep children more relaxed and stable. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of qDWI compared with cDWI for pediatric patients with MMD. METHODS: In this observational study, MR examinations of the brain were performed either with or without sedation in pediatric patients with MMD between September

Pulmonary Functional Imaging: Part 2-State-of-the-Art Clinical Applications and Opportunities for Improved Patient Care.

Pulmonary functional imaging may be defined as the regional quantification of lung function by using primarily CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine techniques. The distribution of pulmonary physiologic parameters, including ventilation, perfusion, gas exchange, and biomechanics, can be noninvasively mapped and measured throughout the lungs. This information is not accessible by using conventional pulmonary function tests, which measure total lung function without viewing the regional distribution. The latter is important because of the heterogeneous distribution of virtually all lung disorders. Moreo
