Determining the impact of cannabis use and severity on tobacco cessation outcomes: study protocol for a prospective tobacco treatment trial.

BACKGROUND: Several evidence-based tobacco cessation treatment strategies exist, though significant barriers to cessation remain which must be addressed to improve abstinence rates for sub-populations of those smoking cigarettes. Cannabis co-use among those who use tobacco is common and appears to be increasing among adults in the United States (US). The literature evaluating the impact of cannabis use on tobacco cessation has been mixed and has several important limitations, which precludes development of treatment recommendations specific to individuals who use tobacco and co-use cannabis. COVID-19 Vaccination and Gaps in India.

INTRODUCTION: The important variables that influence how many people are vaccinated against coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in India include vaccine skepticism, socioeconomic status, and multi-dimensional deprivation. Our preliminary research suggests that uncertainty about the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine has a large and detrimental effect on immunization rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Crucial Subsets Survey (CSS) is performed daily on Facebook to recruit participants for cross-section surveys by academic institutions, the Delphi Research Center, and the University of Maryland's Joint Pr

Exploring the effects of COVID-19 on family planning: results from a qualitative study in rural Uganda following COVID-19 lockdown.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has likely affected the already high unmet need for family planning in low- and middle-income countries. This qualitative study used Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Service Use as a theoretical framework to explore the possible ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic, including the impact of a 3-month government mandated lockdown, might affect family planning outcomes in rural Uganda. A secondary aim was to elicit recommendations to improve family planning service delivery in the context of COVID-19. METHODS: Between June and October 2020, we conducted four

"How many times did I not want to live a life because of him": the complex connections between child sexual abuse, disclosure, and self-injurious thoughts and behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Meta-analyses have confirmed an association between child sexual abuse (CSA) and non-suicidal and suicidal self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITB), yet the mechanisms linking these factors are, to date, poorly understood. The goal of the current study is to explore one potential influencing factor acting in the association between CSA and SITB, which is the disclosure experience. Disclosure has been identified as a prominent factor in the healing process of survivors, with a lack of support following disclosures heightening negative outcomes. Exploring the impact of CSA disclo

Racial Differences in Cigarette Smoking Among Homeless Youth.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have reported pronounced racial/ethnic differences in smoking behavior among homeless youth. Better understanding the factors underlying racial/ethnic differences in daily smoking among homeless youth may help inform programs to reduce smoking in this population. METHODS: Data come from a probability sample of homeless youth in Los Angeles County collected between 2008 and 2009. The sample includes 116 African American, 99 Hispanic, and 119 White youth with ages ranging from 13 to 24 years. Chi-square tests were used to test the differences in daily smoking among

Caregivers' treatment-seeking behaviors and predictors of whether a child received an appropriate antimalarial treatment: a household survey in rural Uganda.

BACKGROUND: This study responds to a rural community's concern that, despite national initiatives, malaria management in young children falls short of national guidelines in their district. This study aimed to: (1) describe caregivers' treatment-seeking behaviors in the rural district of Butaleja, (2) estimate the percentage of children who received an appropriate antimalarial, and (3) determine factors that maximized the likelihood of receiving an appropriate antimalarial. Appropriate antimalarial in this study is defined as having received only the Uganda's age-specific first-line malaria tr

"We fear the police, and the police fear us": structural and individual barriers and facilitators to HIV medication adherence among injection drug users in Kiev, Ukraine.

Ukraine has one of the most severe HIV/AIDS epidemics in Europe, with an estimated 1.63% of the population living with HIV/AIDS in 2007. Injection drug use (IDU) remains the predominant mode of transmission in Kiev - the capital and largest city. Prior reports suggest that the HIV infection rate among IDUs in Kiev reaches 33%, and many have poor and inequitable access to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Among those with access to HAART, little is understood about barriers and facilitators to HAART medication adherence. In May 2009, two semi-structured focus groups were conducted w

The Preliminary Efficacy and Feasibility of SMILE Serious Game for Adolescents and Young Adults: Protocol for Cluster Randomized Multisite Adaptive Trial Design.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems frequently emerge during adolescence and young adulthood, yet many young people do not seek or receive timely support. Digital mental health interventions, including serious games and gamified tools, may improve accessibility and engagement, but evidence for their feasibility and preliminary efficacy across diverse European settings remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This protocol describes the evaluation and trial component of the SMILE (Supporting Mental Health in Young People: Integrated Methodology for Clinical Decisions and Evidence-Based Interventions) projec

Evaluating large language models' performance in answering common questions on drug-induced liver injury.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a complex condition often linked to medication behaviors, with patient education having a crucial role in optimizing outcomes. Large language models (LLMs) could serve as promising tools for scalable patient support, but their utility remains unclear. This study systematically evaluated the capability of six popular open- and closed-source LLMs in addressing common DILI-related queries, focusing on patient-centered education. METHODS: Twenty-eight frequently asked DILI questions were collected with input from hepatologists and patients (n

Exploring the use of mobile health among patients with cardiometabolic and respiratory chronic diseases in primary care nursing: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases, such as cardiometabolic and respiratory conditions, are major contributors to global morbidity and mortality. These conditions place a considerable burden on primary care due to rising healthcare costs and increasing patient dependency in daily life. Digital tools, such as mobile health (mHealth), have emerged as promising resources to support chronic disease management in this setting. However, patient adoption of mHealth remains limited, and few studies have specifically examined its use among individuals with multiple chronic conditions. This study aims to exam

The Impact of Priority Settings at the Start of COVID-19 Mass Vaccination on Subsequent Vaccine Uptake in Japan: One-Year Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Distributing COVID-19 vaccines to the public was an important task for the governments of each country. Because of various limitations, priority settings for vaccination were determined at the time of mass vaccination. However, trends between vaccine intention and uptake, as well as reasons for getting vaccinated or not getting vaccinated, among these groups were understudied, undermining verification of the legitimacy of priority selection. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to illustrate a trend from prior COVID-19 vaccine intention, when the vaccine was not available, to the actual upt

Newborn screening programs promote vaccine acceptance among parents in Turkey: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Newborn screening and childhood immunization are among the most successful public health initiatives. Turkey has a high vaccination coverage (95-99%), but a recent decline is concerning. Vaccine hesitancy (VH) is a growing global issue, identified by the WHO as a major public health threat. Given that VH may correlate with attitudes toward other health practices, we explored whether early engagement with the health system via newborn screening influences childhood vaccine acceptance. Although these programs are implemented separately but concurrently as part of the national healthc

Client, health care provider, and policymaker perspectives on point-of-care/near-point-of-care testing for sexually transmitted infections in community pharmacies in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Point-of-care or near-point-of-care (POC/near-POC) tests for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are often unavailable and unaffordable in low-resource settings, despite the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommendation that such testing be offered, leading to empiric treatment. Private community pharmacies (CPs) are often the first point of contact for people with symptoms of STIs, where pharmacists dispense treatment without diagnostic testing or prescriptions. This study evaluated clients,' providers,' and policymakers' perspectives on POC/near-POC STI testing in communi

Navigating sexual challenges in couples post breast cancer treatment: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer (BC) treatment affects BC survivors' sexual health, causing relational challenges. Sexual health is an under-communicated topic in cancer survivorship, and partner perspectives are often neglected. This qualitative study explored (1) how sexual health is affected by BC diagnosis and treatment, and (2) how couples navigate the resulting sexual and relational challenges. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were performed separately of 37 BC survivors and 19 of their partners. The study included 19 heterosexual couples and 18 BC survivors who either did not have a partner o

The lived experience of persons who attempt suicide: a bottom-up review co-designed, co-produced and co-written by experts by experience and academics.

This is the first bottom-up review of the lived experience of persons who attempt suicide. The study has been co-designed, co-conducted and co-written by experts by experience and academics, focusing on first-person narratives within and outside the medical field. The lived world of individuals who attempt suicide is characterized by experiences related to the attempt itself ("contemplating suicide as a deliberate death", "contemplating suicide as an escape route", "looking for online answers about suicide", "planning suicide", "finding rest between the suicidal decision and the final act", "c

Severe maternal outcomes and their underlying causes in Ethiopia. Systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Severe maternal outcomes (SMOs), including maternal deaths and life-threatening complications during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days postpartum, reflect the quality of maternal healthcare services and highlight gaps in timely and effective interventions. Monitoring SMOs is crucial for improving maternal health systems, as it helps identify preventable factors, strengthen clinical practices, and inform policy decisions to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality. This study synthesizes existing evidence on the pooled incidence proportion of SMOs in Ethiopia and examines thei

The Opioid Analgesic Reduction Study (OARS)-a comparison of opioid vs. non-opioid combination analgesics for management of post-surgical pain: a double-blind randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Everyday people die unnecessarily from opioid overdose-related addiction. Dentists are among the leading prescribers of opioid analgesics. Opioid-seeking behaviors have been linked to receipt of initial opioid prescriptions following the common dental procedure of third molar extraction. With each opioid prescription, a patient's risk for opioid misuse or abuse increases. With an estimated 56 million tablets of 5 mg hydrocodone annually prescribed after third molar extractions in the USA, 3.5 million young adults may be unnecessarily exposed to opioids by dentists who are inadverte
