BACKGROUND: Minority patients often have greater numbers of complications, revisions, and costs after total hip arthroplasty (THA). This study investigates how race correlates with specific surgical complications, revisions, and total costs following THA both before and after propensity matching.
METHODS: Data from 2014-2016 were collected from a large commercial insurance database known as PearlDiver. THA patients were assigned under Current Procedural Terminology (CPT-27130) and International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD-9-P-8151) codes and then divided into groups based on r

BACKGROUND: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is greatly affecting the quality of life (QOL) of women. There are some surgical techniques for POP repair, for example, transvaginal mesh surgery (TVM), laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy (LSC), and robot-assisted sacrocolpopexy (RSC). In the United States and Europe, the number of TVM has rapidly decreased since 2011 due to complications and safety concerns and has shifted to LSC/RSC. In Japan, RSC has increased after the insurance coverage of RSC in 2020. Therefore, we compared the surgical outcomes of TVM and RSC in POP surgery.
METHODS: We retrospectively

BACKGROUND: Length of stay (LOS) in the hospital following posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) has decreased over the past decade due to well-defined postoperative clinical pathways, earlier mobilization, and improved pain control methods. Historically, liberal use of parenteral and oral opioids for pain control caused side effects, resulting in delayed discharge. Intraoperative intrathecal morphine (ITM) has been posited to reduce the need for postoperative opioids and to expedite the discharge process. This study examines the relationship between the use o

BACKGROUND: Inadvertent perioperative hypothermia, a common complication secondary to anaesthesia and surgical exposure, affects patients globally and is associated with adverse outcomes. Interventions to prevent perioperative normothermia include consistent core temperature monitoring and active warming strategies. Forced-air warming is the key active warming strategy recommended in guidelines and requires consistent perioperative application to prevent hypothermia. Implementation of guidelines varies across the Asian Australasian Regional Section (AARS), characterised by diverse healthcare s

BACKGROUND: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is the leading cause of death in adults and poses a substantial economic burden in the United States. Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) remains the standard surgical intervention for multivessel and left-main coronary disease. However, the combined impact of race and socioeconomic status on CABG outcomes has not been fully explored.
METHODS: A total of 47,373 admissions of adults (18-85 y) who underwent CABG from 2016-2020 were analysed. Adults aged 18-85 years with a primary diagnosis of IHD who underwent CABG were identified using ICD-10 codes.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of pediatric disability. Most pediatric TBIs are mild but can result in long-term cognitive and functional impairments. Outpatient follow-up is essential to detect post-concussive symptoms and aid recovery.
METHODS: All patients 3-18 years of age with positive TBI findings on CT or MRI from 2018-2024 were retrospectively reviewed. Follow-up was defined as an appointment with neurology, neuropsychology, neurosurgery, or physical medicine and rehabilitation within three months of discharge. Analyses were performed with appropriate

OBJECTIVES: Unplanned hospital readmission (UHR) after paediatric neurosurgery is an important indicator of surgical outcomes. As this field deals with complex cases, there is an increased likelihood of potential complications and the subsequent need for readmission. We estimated paediatric neurosurgery UHR rates globally and identified significant factors contributing to 30-day and 90-day UHR rates in children undergoing neurosurgical procedures.
DESIGN: A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain is a widely prevalent symptom and the foremost cause of disability on a global scale. Although various degenerative imaging findings observed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been linked to low back pain and disc herniation, none of them can be considered pathognomonic for this condition, given the high prevalence of abnormal findings in asymptomatic individuals. Nevertheless, there is a lack of knowledge regarding whether radiomics features in MRI images combined with clinical features can be useful for prediction modeling of treatment success. The objective
