Children's Perception of Research Participation: Examining Trauma Exposure and Distress.

USING THE REACTIONS TO RESEARCH Participation Questionnaire for Children (RRPQ-C), this study examined perceptions of research participation among 181 school-aged children with and without trauma histories. As part of two larger studies, children completed non-trauma related tasks to assess emotion understanding and cognitive ability. Parents (and not children) reported on children's interpersonal (e.g., sexual abuse, physical abuse, witnessing domestic violence, witnessing community violence) and non-interpersonal (e.g., motor vehicle accidents, medical traumas, natural disasters) trauma expo

Correlates of psychosomatic stress symptoms among farm women: a research note on farm and family functioning.

The relationship between self-reported psychosomatic stress symptoms and dimensions of family and farm functioning were examined in a sample of New York State dairy farm wives (N = 126). The farm women completed a questionnaire assessing home and farm task loads, farm complexity, intrapersonal role conflict, interpersonal role conflict, husband support, and marital satisfaction. The psychosomatic stress symptoms included nervousness, restlessness, insomnia, shortness-of-breath, and fainting. In general, stress symptoms showed little relationship to task loads, farm complexity, and intrapersona

Retrospective childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder traits and their differential associations with mood disorder presentations in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Childhood symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often persist in adulthood and overlap considerably with mood disorder presentations. This study examines how specific childhood ADHD traits relate to distinct clinical characteristics in adults with mood disorders. METHODS: We analyzed data from 755 adults diagnosed with major depressive disorder (n = 287) or bipolar disorder (n = 468). Participants retrospectively reported childhood ADHD traits using the 25-item Wender Utah Rating Scale. We mapped associations between childhood ADHD total score and three child

From Attachment Trauma to Traumatic Attachment: Invisible Injuries of Early Childhood and Subtle Relational Codes of Self-Regulation.

Building on recent contributions by Farina and Schimmenti (2025a), this paper advances a more nuanced framework for their concept of attachment trauma focusing on the underlying mechanisms. The injury of attachment trauma, often concealed within ostensibly ordinary family systems, may leave no explicit memory trace yet manifest as enduring patterns of dysregulation. Instead, it becomes apparent through its clinical consequences such as Complex PTSD, borderline phenomena, dissociative disorders and their various complications. Central to the framework presented in this paper are the concept of

Dwelling on verbal but not pictorial threat cues: An eye-tracking study with adult survivors of childhood interpersonal violence.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have found evidence of an attentional bias for trauma-related stimuli in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) using eye-tracking (ET) technlogy. However, it is unclear whether findings for PTSD after traumatic events in adulthood can be transferred to PTSD after interpersonal trauma in childhood. The latter is often accompanied by more complex symptom features, including, for example, affective dysregulation and has not yet been studied using ET. The aim of this study was to explore which components of attention are biased in adult victims of childhood trauma with P

Fostering Connections: How Mentoring Relationships Can Promote Youth Social Capital.

Little is known about how mentors support mentees in strengthening social capital. It is theorized that mentors support mentees in building new connections and strengthening existing relationships (i.e., connection-building support). This mixed-methods study examines how connection-building support contributes to mentee's network mobilization in pursuit of life goals. Survey data were gathered from youth (n = 122) ages 13-18 (88% youth of color; 57% female). A path model tested the association between connection-building support and mentee goal attainment and occupational identity via network

Endogenous oxytocin-linked heart-rate synchrony and social connection during live sports spectatorship.

Oxytocin is a putative pharmacological target for social dysfunction. However, clinical trials of intranasal oxytocin have produced modest and inconsistent effects, motivating the search for naturalistic, non-pharmacological ways to recruit endogenous oxytocin. Here we show that a single session of live collegiate sports spectating is associated with endogenous oxytocin and interpersonal heart-rate (HR) synchrony, both of which were linked to psychological indices of social bonding among casual fans. Sixty adult spectators, including 21 female participants, provided repeated saliva samples for

Predictors of affect across social contexts: An integration of existing diary datasets.

Daily life is characterized by periods of complete and public solitude, face-to-face interactions and digitally mediated interactions when alone or with others, all of which elicit varying degrees and different types of affect. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of affect during these distinct everyday contexts. By combining data from 11 distinct datasets, we examined how time spent in complete solitude (not interacting and with no-one around), digitally mediated interactions when alone, public solitude (not interacting but with others present), interacting face-to-face

Fixations, blinks, and pupils differentially capture individual and interpersonal dynamics in role-asymmetric mutual gaze interaction.

Although eye cues have proven effective in simulated gaze contact, it remains unclear how and through which eye parameters people interpret and use such cues in real interactions. We developed a real-time dyadic paradigm that restricted interaction to the eye region and incorporated asymmetrical roles and temporally structured interaction phases. One partner (listener) experienced emotion-inducing sounds, while the other (observer), unaware of the timing or content, attempted to infer the listener's emotions solely from eye cues. Using a multi-measure approach, we analyzed fixation, blink, and

Social Reward Responsiveness Moderates the Association between Perceived Social Competence and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents.

Adolescence is an important social development period that is also marked by increased rates of depression. Positive social interactions are crucial for cultivating social skills and functioning, also known as social competence, and lower social competence has been related to greater depressive symptoms. Still, little is known about factors that impact why some adolescents with low self-perceptions of social competence develop depression while others do not. The present study addressed this gap by examining neural processing of social rewards as a potential moderator of the association between

With a little help from my 'ordinary friends': relationships, networks, and resilience in Masisi, North Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Are social networks the key to understanding resilience in conflict? Recent studies suggest so, but relational research in conflict-affected areas is rare. What exists stresses the importance of small circles of close family members, trusted friends, and co-ethnic persons/groups, but tends to overlook their aggregate effect. Drawing on data from a relational study of personal support networks in Masisi, a rural area of North Kivu province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, I show how people rely on large, widespread networks of ethnically diverse recent strangers. I highlight the types

Adolescents' relationship quality with professional caregivers in residential care: the impact of adverse childhood experiences and attachment.

Adolescents in residential care often experience adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and attachment difficulties that may affect relationships with professional caregivers ("mentors"). This study examined predictors of adolescent - mentor relationship quality from both adolescent and mentor perspectives. Participants were 35 adolescents and 25 mentors from eight residential facilities. Adolescents completed the ACE-IQ and adolescent Friends and Family Interview (FFI); mentors completed the mentor Adult Attachment Interview (AAI); both completed adolescent- and mentor-reported Psychological Av

The role of the AI chatbot for digital companionship among older adults: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Amid growing concerns surrounding social isolation among older adults, AI chatbots have emerged as promising tools for providing digital companionship. While the intersection of aging and technology has been widely explored, there remains a gap in understanding the nuanced ways in which AI chatbots function as relational partners in older adults' daily lives. This study aimed to examine the roles of the AI chatbot in fostering digital companionship for adults in later life. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Drawing on a qualitative research design, the study conducted in

Social bonds and helping dynamics promote cooperation in nested group populations.

Most studies on the evolution of cooperation focus on single-group settings, whereas real-world interactions often occur within nested group structures and are shaped by pre-existing social relationships. The coexistence of cross-level public-goods allocation, dynamically evolving social bonds, and heterogeneous helping responses creates multiple feedback channels, making the stability of cooperation dependent on both group structure and relationship dynamics. To address these limitations, this study develops a two-stage game model that incorporates social bonds to characterize relationship st

Shared burdens: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of couples facing infertility.

This study explores the psychological and emotional impacts of infertility treatments on couples. Utilizing Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, this qualitative research delves into the shared experiences of five couples undergoing fertility treatments, uncovering the deep-seated personal and relational dynamics of their journeys. Three key themes were identified: From Hope to Exhaustion: Navigating the Emotional Rollercoaster of Treatment, Redefining Togetherness: Making Sense of Infertility as a Couple, and Networks of Care: Negotiating Support Within and Beyond the Couple. Study explo

Live-streaming interaction and young consumers' identification with time-honored brands: The roles of emotional arousal and relationship strength.

Time-honored brands, as carriers of cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship, face significant challenges in achieving sustainable development in the digital era. With the rapid growth of e-commerce live streaming and the increasing dominance of younger consumers, how these brands can effectively engage youth segments and enhance brand identification has become a critical issue. Drawing on the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) framework and brand authenticity theory, this study examines the mechanisms through which product interaction and interpersonal interaction influence young consume

The Use of Conversational Repairs in Interactions Involving People With Parkinson's Disease: A Large Corpus Comparison Study.

PURPOSE: Interlocutors engage in acts of conversational repair to resolve trouble sources, or communication breakdowns. This is necessary for successful communication, allowing interlocutors to establish and maintain common ground. Here, we investigated the use of conversational repairs in the conversations of people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and concomitant dysarthria. METHOD: Conversational repairs were coded in a large corpus of 114 conversations involving a person with PD and a neurotypical (NT) partner (NT-PD dyads) and a comparison corpus of 80 conversations involving two NT partner

A Relationship-Centered Model of Supporting Exit From Commercial Sexual Exploitation.

Conceptualizing commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) in linear stages of pre-, peri- and postexploitation misses the complex transformation of relationships required to engage in recovery. Through an ongoing partnership with a local residential recovery program, we conducted interviews with six survivors of CSE. Results suggest pivotal transition moments, first marking transition from childhood or domestic violence, when abuse becomes exchange, and then, upon efforts to exit from CSE, repeated cycles of efforts like those exiting intimate partner violence. These complex transitions suggest a m

Working through emotions: Sadness predicts social engagement and physiologic linkage for men and disengagement for women in dyadic interactions.

We investigated whether sadness leaves an "emotional residue" by inducing sadness in one individual and testing its transfer to an unaware new acquaintance. Participants (N = 230; 115 dyads) completed cooperative tasks in same-gender dyads. Before meeting, participants recalled a personal event. In half the dyads, one participant (sad actor) recalled a sad event, while their partner (sad-paired partner) recalled a neutral event. In control dyads, both participants recalled neutral events. We examined self-reported emotions, affective language, behavior, and measures of sympathetic arousal to c

Dynamic friendship processes related to learning interest: Moderating by class-level social-emotional competency.

BACKGROUND: Learning interest is an intrinsic motivation that dynamically interacts with friendships. Students alter their learning interests to assimilate with their friends and actively establish friendships on the basis of similar interests. These processes do not operate in isolation but rather in the broader peer context. Class-level social-emotional competency (SEC) is a contextual characteristic that influences students' social and learning processes. AIMS: This study used reading and mathematics as examples to examine the moderating role of class-level SEC in the friendship influence
