As food allergies become increasingly prevalent and testing methods to identify "food allergy" increase in number, the importance of careful diagnosis has become even more critical. Misdiagnosis of food allergy and inappropriate use of unproven testing modalities may lead to a harmful food-elimination diet. This case is an example of an infant who was placed on an overly restrictive elimination diet at the recommendation of her health care providers, resulting in kwashiorkor and acquired acrodermatitis enteropathica.

Although potatoes represent a large part of diets worldwide, adverse reactions to them are considered uncommon and usually result from ingestion, mainly in children. In contrast, immediate reactions to contact with raw potato has been reported more frequently in adults, usually in the form of an oral contact dermatitis or contact urticaria, but also may manifest as asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis, wheezing or even anaphylaxis. We report a case of non-occupational allergic contact urticaria caused by raw potato, which we then documented by prick testing.

Adverse reactions to seafood are common and may cause many types of symptoms that are difficult to define. The nature of these reactions are variable including allergic and toxic reactions as well as infectious diseases. The differentiation between these entities is essential in choosing therapy. We describe 9 patients with IgE mediated allergic reactions due to crustaceans and fish diagnosed from case history, clinical findings, skin tests and specific IgE antibodies. Forty nine patients with mycologically confirmed Tinea cruris were investigated for the association of hypersensitivity to trichophytin and the isolation of dermatophytes from clinically normal sites with chronicity and recurrence of infection. The authors analysed the results of Montenegro Test in 402 patients with mucocutaneous leishmaniasis from Espírito Santo State, where the Leishmania braziliensis braziliensis has been isolated from humans cases and dogs. The test was positive in 371 cases (92.2%) before treatment. The Montenegro Test given during or after treatment changed the results in 17 of 20 negative cases. The remaining 3 cases and 9 which changed the results had positives biopsies. It was demonstrated again the efficiency of the Montenegro Test in the diagnosis of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis.

A study on cellularly mediated immune reaction in male patients aged between 18 and 30 years and suffering from condylomata acuminata (C.A.) revealed immune suppression particularly of the cellularly mediated system. As compared with the normal population, our study proved a significantly increased portion of hypergic patients and a clear decrease of the various groups of lymphocytes.

Dogs immunized with o-DNCP-BSA or eggs of Toxocara canis developed anaphylactic antibodies other than IgE. The antibodies were heat-resistant at 56 degrees C for 2 hours, not reduced by 2-mercaptoethanol and PCA and P-K reactivity was only observed at 3-4 h sensitized sites of recipient skin. High titres of antigen-specific IgGd were determined by means of an ELISA technique.

An ear assay was used to detect delayed responses in mice. Animals were sensitized and subsequently injected with 3H thyminedeoxyryribose to label antigen sensitive cells. Each animal was given a control and a test ear challenge and the respective responses were assessed by scintillation counting of 3H in cells which had accumulated at the reaction site. Delayed responses were consistently observed in animals sensitized to dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) but not in animals sensitized to sheep red blood cells. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Q-VAX vaccine, approved in Australia, prevents Q fever. However, individuals with prior Coxiella burnetii (Cb) infection have an increased risk of adverse reactions, requiring pre-vaccination screening by an intradermal hypersensitivity skin test for cell-mediated immune memory and a serological assay for anti-Cb antibodies. The week-long interval for skin test assessment limits efficient vaccination. This study evaluated a standardized interferon-γ release assay (IGRA) as a potential skin test alternative.

OBJECTIVE: There is no standard definition of asthma for epidemiological purposes; most surveys use symptoms and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Few studies tested mannitol challenge test (MCT) in occupational settings. We sought to determine efficacy and safety of MCT in detecting subjects with asthma symptoms in the workplace.
