PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate measures reflecting the onset of tense marking for children between the ages of 2;0 (years;months) and 3;0.
METHOD: The validity of 4 cumulative measures of tense marker emergence and productivity was evaluated relative to existing measures of early grammatical development in a sample of 20 children followed longitudinally. Fourteen children were at risk for specific language impairment (AR-SLI group), and 6 children had low average language abilities (LA group).
RESULTS: All measures of onset were highly correlated with the trad…

8 preschoolers with specific language impairment (age range=44-58 mo.) and 8 language-matched, typically developing toddlers (22-29 mo.) participated in a verb comprehension task to investigate sensitivity to auxiliary is in four contexts --grammatical (Who is pushing?), omitted (Who pushing?), ungrammatical (Who in pushing?), and nonsense (Who id pushing?). Analysis yielded a significant interaction: children with specific language impairment had the lowest comprehension in the ungrammatical context and typically developing children had the highest. Perhaps children with specific language imp…

UNLABELLED: This report reviews the speech and language development of a child who, as result of complete subglottic stenosis, was aphonic from birth until 2 years and 11 months of age at which time laryngotracheal reconstruction provided normal respiration. The boy had congenital subglottic stenosis requiring neonatal tracheostomy. The congenital subglottic stenosis progressed to complete subglottic stenosis during the neonatal period. The child's speech and language development was monitored for a 24-week period following airway reconstruction.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: The reader will learn about…

One of the most spectacular progresses in modern medicine is the possibility to replace a deaf ear, a sensory organ in total by an implantable electronic prosthesis, a so-called cochlear implant (CI). The CI stimulates the auditory nerve by electrical pulses and thus generates the sensation of hearing along the auditory pathway. One of the most impressive aspects of cochlear implantation is the fact that small children with profound deafness who were able a few years ago to learn spoken language only to very limited extent may achieve nowadays an almost normal language development. Duration an…

This article describes two novel contexts for language and memory stimulation in individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD): student-supervised physical exercise and partnered volunteering at community agencies. Information presented is based on 5 years of the authors' experiences at the University of Arizona supervising student-administered interventions with mildly to moderately affected home-dwelling AD patients in the Volunteers in Partnership and Elder Rehab programs. The authors report significant mood and fitness improvements by program participants, as measured on direct testing as well…

The articulatory awareness task, which was found by Griffiths and Frith (2002) to discriminate ex-dyslexic from non-dyslexic adults, was given to three groups of Japanese college students with different English reading abilities. Two unexpected results emerged: (1) Articulatory awareness performance was generally poor across the groups, thereby suggesting that poor articulatory awareness is not unique to dyslexia but rather to reading difficulty in general, and (2) There was a weak but significant positive correlation between articulatory awareness and English reading ability. Implications are

This article reviews the relationship between different learning disabilities, language disorders, and the psychiatric disorders that are commonly associated with learning disabilities and language disorder: attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, depression, and conduct or antisocial personality disorder. The complex associations between language disorders and specific learning disabilities--dyslexia, nonverbal learning disorder, dyscalculia--and the various psychiatric disorders are discussed. Clinical vignettes are presented to highlight the impact of these disor…

Children with developmental speech/language impairments are at higher risk for reading disability than typical peers with no history of speech/language impairment. This article reviews the literacy outcomes of children with speech/language impairments, clarifying the differential risk for three groups of children: speech production impairments alone, oral language impairments alone, and speech production and oral language impairments. Children at greatest risk for reading and writing disabilities are children with language impairments alone and children with comorbid speech impairments and lan…

BACKGROUND: The construct of alexithymia implies a deficit in symbolization for emotional, somatic, and mental states. However, the etiologic factors for alexithymia have not yet been fully elucidated. The present study investigated the use of mentalizing language, i.e. the utterance of internal states, from a developmental perspective according to attachment organization and disorganization.
METHODS: A longitudinal design across 4 time points was applied to a volunteer sample of 42 children. At 12 months, children were tested with the strange situation procedure, the standard measure of atta…

The acquisition of spatial language is often assumed to be built upon an early- emerging system of nonlinguistic spatial knowledge. We tested this relationship by examining spatial language in children with Williams syndrome (WS), a rare genetic disorder that gives rise to severe nonlinguistic spatial de deficits together with relatively spared language. Twelve children with WS, 12 normally developing mental-age matched children, and 12 normal adults described 80 videotaped motion events. Children with WS showed substantial control over key linguistic components of the motion event, including …

It is well established that deaf children begin school lagging in general language skills relative to hearing peers, and that deaf and hearing students differ with regard to literacy and other academic skills. These domains are typically treated separately, by different groups of researchers, with little consideration for common factors that might underlie them. It appears, however, that both of these situations might reflect differences in conceptual and content knowledge, as well as linguistic knowledge, between and among deaf and hearing learners. Such differences would clearly contribute t…

Disturbance of neurologic function in disorders of the central nervous system is expressed as altered activation pattern in functional networks after specific tasks, and can be studied by functional imaging modalities, e.g. positron emission tomography (PET). Language, a complex brain function is based on the interplay of a distributed network in which partial functions are executed in various centers and tasks are hierarchically organized according to their complexity. The specialization of different centers and the lateralization of integrative functions into the dominant (usually left) hemi…

BACKGROUND: Dysarthria is a common manifestation of Parkinson's disease that increases in frequency and intensity with the progress of the disease (Streifler 1984). Up to 20% of Parkinsonian patients are referred for speech and language therapy (S & LT), its aim being to improve the intelligibility of the patient's speech.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy and effectiveness of novel S & LT techniques versus standard S & LT to treat dysarthria in patients with Parkinson's disease. To compare the efficacy and effectiveness of one S & LT technique versus a second form of S & LT to treat Parkin…

We present a single case study of an Arabic/French bilingual patient, ZT, who, at the age of 32, suffered a cerebral vascular accident that resulted in a massive infarct in the left peri-sylvian region. ZT's reading displays the characteristics of the deep dyslexia syndrome in both languages, that is, production of semantic, visual, and morphological errors, and concreteness effect in reading aloud and impossibility of reading nonwords. In the first part of this paper, using a three-route model of reading, we account for the patient's performance by positing functional lesions, which affect th…

We investigated how the progressive function of the metaphor, the model world of signs, language and culture, link the cell's immunological knowledge with a perceivable concept of the body. Using ethnomethodologically oriented, partly interpretative text analysis, we examined the lymphocyte stimulation test, word clusters in immunology and other medical specialties, the linguistic presentation of the body in German, American and the internet, the presentation of the "self" of the cell in biology and immunology, and protocols of oncological out-patient interviews and chatrooms. When an abstract…

The difficulties which many dyslexic students encounter in the learning of the English language often extend to the learning of a foreign language in school. Although this problem has been acknowledged for some time, and although the learning of a modern foreign language is a core element in the Scottish curriculum, there has been little research into how modern languages can be presented to offer the best learning opportunities to dyslexic students. Dyslexic students are likely to benefit from a multisensory approach to the learning of a modern foreign language, and it seems likely that they …

We studied a 53 year old right-handed patient who presented isolated myoclonus of right facial muscles induced exclusively by language. Twitching significantly hindered speaking and reading performance. MRI and CT-scan revealed no brain lesion. Conventional EEG showed a few spike-waves predominantly in the left hemisphere. Spike-waves increased during drowsiness. An EEG-EMG polygraphic study was performed during stimulation tests which included linguistic tasks and non-verbal/non-linguistic tests. Myoclonus was triggered by speaking and writing but not by non-linguistic tasks. The severity of …

This study determined the perceptions of experienced speech-language pathologists regarding current practices in the speech rehabilitation of laryngectomy patients since the introduction of the tracheoesophageal puncture-voice prosthesis technique in 1980. The sample population consisted of 151 experienced speech-language pathologists, or 43% of those who were sent questionnaires. The speech-language pathologists ranked tracheoesophageal puncture-voice prosthesis as their most preferred speech rehabilitation method and the electrolarynx as their least preferred, even though the electrolarynx c…

The speech therapist should assess and develop the communication skills of the deaf child prior and after a cochlear implantation. The goals are first the acquisition of a useful communication system by the deaf child (for avoiding a cognitive stimulation lack) and parallely the acquisition of good oral language competencies. The different modes of communication useable in the profoundly deaf education are presented. Exclusive sign language use is not indicated in implanted children. It is well demonstrated that an exclusive oral communication is associated with an insufficient knowledge of th…
