5 patients in whom the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) developed after bone-marrow transplantation (BMT) for chronic myeloid leukaemia are described. Donors in all cases were siblings who were matched for all major-histocompatibility-complex determinants. All patients were neutropenic to varying degrees at the onset of respiratory symptoms. Current knowledge about the dynamics of antigen presentation to T cells during viral infection is very poor despite being of fundamental importance to our understanding of anti-viral immunity. BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia is a syndrome of heterogeneous origin characterized by deficient placentation due to the inability of the cytotrophoblast to acquire an invasive phenotype and to remodel the uterine spiral arteries. One of the main problems observed early in pre-eclampsia is an altered regulation of the immune system, where the shift toward a Th2 cytokine profile observed in normal pregnancies, does not occur. In pre-eclampsia, high interferon (IFN)-gamma concentrations are present, along with transforming growth factor-beta cytokines, which retard migration of cytotrophoblasts.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of HLA class I in susceptibility to Felty's syndrome (FS) and large granular lymphocyte (LGL) syndrome.
METHODS: Fifty caucasoid FS patients, and 55 patients with LGL syndrome, of whom 26 had arthritis and 29 did not, were studied. In order to evaluate the expression of antinuclear antibodies (ANA) in normal elderly individuals over time and clinical significance, a cross-sectional ANA testing in healthy Japanese was performed, followed by annual evaluations of ANA positive aged (> or = 65 years) and a control group. ANA was more prevalent in the aged (11.4% vs. 3.8%) and most were persistent after 4 years.
