Orthognathic surgery-related condylar resorption in patients with skeletal class III malocclusion versus class III malocclusion: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic-orthognathic treatment is the standard of care for moderate and/or severe skeletal class III (SCIII) malocclusion. Following orthognathic surgery, morphological changes in the temporomandibular joint structures (TMJ) may contribute to condylar resorption (CR). OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to identify the morphological signs of condylar resorption (changes in the condylar head, position, neck, disk, and joint space) following orthognathic surgery in patients with SCIII compared with those with skeletal class II (SCII) malocclusion. Furthermore, surgical tech

Who seeks surgical-orthodontic treatment: a current review.

Records for more than 2,000 individuals seen in the Dentofacial Clinic of the University of North Carolina were examined to evaluate trends in referral patterns for orthognathic surgery and acceptance of surgical treatment The vast majority of patients have been white and female from the beginning, and the female-male ratio remained constant at 2:1 throughout the 1990s. The proportion of nonwhite patients increased significantly after 1995, with the change resulting almost totally from more Hispanic and Asian patients. The proportion of African Americans, who represent 22% of the general popul

[Diagnosis and therapy of adult patients with facial asymmetry].

The goal of orthodontic treatment is to improve the patient's life by enhancing dental and jaw functions and dentofacial esthetics [Graber TM, et al., Orthodontics current principles and techniques. 4(e) ed. St Louis: Elsevier, 2005.]. Harmonious occlusion is achieved following improvements of malocclusion via orthodontic treatment [Ehmer U and Broll P, Int J Adult Orthod Orthognath Surg 1992;7:153-159. Throckmorton GS, et al., J Prosthet Dent 1984;51:252-261.]. Perfect facial symmetry is extremely rare, and normal faces have a degree of asymmetry. Patients with dentofacial deformity more freq

Comparative assessment of two-phase class II treatment with Activator or Bionator followed by fixed appliances: A retrospective controlled before-and-after study.

AIM: Two-phase treatment for children with Class II malocclusion with several functional appliances is still performed by many orthodontists, while the Activator and the Bionator appliances are two of the most popular ones. Aim of this study was to compare the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of treatment with these two appliances. METHODS: Class II children treated with Activator or Bionator in the first phase, followed by a phase of fixed appliances were included. Skeletal and dentoalveolar parameters were assessed from lateral cephalograms and analysed with linear regressions at 5%. RES

Strategic treatment for a patient with missing lateral incisor and first molar accompanied by posterior scissor bite and an impacted premolar.

Managing orthodontic treatment for adults with missing permanent teeth can be intricate, especially when dealing with a posterior scissor bite and an impacted tooth. This case report presents successful treatment of a female patient with dental and skeletal Class II malocclusion, high mandibular plane angle, missing maxillary left lateral incisor and mandibular right first molar, as well as right posterior scissor bite, and a deeply impacted mandibular left second premolar. In the maxilla, the right second molar and right lateral incisor were strategically extracted to eliminate the scissor bi

Effect of preoperative continuous positive airway pressure duration on outcomes after maxillofacial surgery for obstructive sleep apnoea.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) remains the first-line treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), and is known to result in various physiological changes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between duration of preoperative CPAP therapy and outcome after maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) for OSA. We retrospectively analysed consecutive patients treated at our institution, and divided them into 2 groups based on duration of treatment with CPAP: short-term (up to 12 months) and long-term use (12 months or more). We controlled for baseline demographic and c

The prevalence of Brodie bite in untreated orthodontic patients in Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE: The Brodie bite (BRB) is a rare posterior crossbite affecting the transverse occlusal relationship with the palatal cusps of the upper molars, biting into the vestibule and outside the buccal cusps of the lower molar teeth. The BRB is a highly challenging orthodontic problem and is an extreme form of scissors bite. Patients with this problem present with facial deformity and inability to chew on the affected side. The problem is usually not identified until it becomes severe. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of BRB among untreated orthodontic patients in two geo-political

Postsurgical volumetric airway changes in 2-jaw orthognathic surgery patients.

INTRODUCTION: Findings from early cephalometric studies on airway changes after 2-jaw orthognathic surgery have been challenged because the previous anteroposterior interpretation of airway changes can now be evaluated in 3 dimensions. The aims of this study were to use cone-beam computed tomography to quantify the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and total airway volume changes associated with skeletal movements of the maxilla and mandible in a sample of patients undergoing 2-jaw orthognathic surgery for correction of skeletal malocclusion. METHODS: Skeletal movements and airway volumes of 71 postpu

Patient with nonsyndromic bilateral and multiple impacted teeth and dentigerous cysts.

This article reports the successful treatment of a patient with the unusual occurrence of bilateral and multiple dentigerous cysts of the premolars. One impacted mandibular premolar was moved by traction orthodontically. On the opposite side, the impacted premolar was autotransplanted after space was created through mesial movement and hemi-sectioning of the neighboring molars. The impacted maxillary premolar was extracted. Miniscrews were additionally used for anchorage reinforcement to prevent unintended counteractions and solve the problem of space management after autotransplantation. We a
