Clinical interview skills and identification of emotional disorders in primary care.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research was to study the relationship between the clinical interview skills of primary care physicians and their psychodiagnostic ability during office visits. METHOD: Ten doctors took part in the study, and 233 patients were assessed. The patients were seen and diagnosed by their physicians and interviewed afterward by a psychiatrist using the Present State Examination. All the interviews with the primary care physicians were recorded on videotape, and the Physician's Skills Observation Scale was used to analyze 10 interviews per doctor, five psychiatric cases and

A cognitive architecture for Long COVID: the interplay of brain fog, fatigue, attention and memory.

The cognitive mechanisms underlying post-acute COVID-19 sequelae ('Long COVID') remain poorly defined. While deficits in memory and executive function are well-documented, it is unclear whether these arise from primary neural dysfunction or are secondary consequences of fatigue-related factors. Here, we addressed this in a community cohort (N = 24 095) using a custom cognitive battery to dissect the interplay between sustained attention, fatigue, and memory. Among this subset, 11 925 participants had previously tested positive for COVID-19, and 548 reported ongoing symptoms consistent with Lon

Conceptualising and Reimagining Professionalism in Different Contexts: From Nurse to Nursing Lecturer.

This article aims to conceptualise and reimagine the notion of nursing professionalism in two different contexts. Utilising a critical reflexive approach whilst drawing on salient theories, concepts, and studies on professionalism, I will consider my professional journey from that of a mental health nurse within the NHS to that of a nursing lecturer within a research-intensive university. The paper highlights that, at its worst, the gendered lens of what I term, old professionalism, may alienate some professions, nursing in this case, over others. It may also create stigmatising attitudes towa

Culture eats evidence for breakfast: how culture influences implementation of evidence-based practices.

BACKGROUND: Research has produced a substantial and expanding body of evidence-based practices (EBPs), encompassing interventions, programmes, clinical guidelines, protocols, care pathways and models of care supported by the best available evidence. Despite this, healthcare delivery is still frequently characterised as insufficiently evidence-based, reflecting a persistent gap between what is known to be effective and what is routinely implemented in practice. Traditional explanations only partially account for this gap, often overlooking culture as a critical yet under-theorized influence. Cu

Implementing Everyday Life Rehabilitation (ELR) in Supported Housing for Individuals with Serious Mental Illness: Occupational Therapists' Experiences of Professional Discretion During Early Implementation.

BACKGROUND: Everyday Life Rehabilitation (ELR) is a collaborative, person‑centered, activity- and recovery‑oriented intervention model developed for supported housing (SH) for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI). ELR promotes long-term recovery through collaboration between residents, occupational therapists (OTs), and housing staff. While ELR has demonstrated positive effects and cost‑effectiveness in a randomized controlled trial (RCT), implementing collaborative models across health and social care boundaries remains challenging. This study aimed to explore how OTs experienced the

Predictors of conversion from major depressive disorder to bipolar disorder: A population-based PADRIS-PRESTO cohort study in Catalonia.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is frequently misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder (MDD), with diagnostic delays averaging 6-10 years leading to suboptimal treatment and poorer outcomes. Early identification of patients at risk for diagnostic conversion remains a critical clinical priority. We aimed to identify clinical predictors of BD conversion in a large population-based cohort and develop a clinically applicable prediction model. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using electronic health records from the Catalan PADRIS-PRESTO database (2010-2019). Patients aged ≥18

How to improve uptake and adherence to dietary trials in gestational diabetes amongst South Asian women: insights from patient and public involvement and engagement.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes and affects approximately 10-20% of pregnancies in the UK. The prevalence of GDM among South Asian women is around twice that of White British women, and they are also twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes following diagnosis. Although multiple dietary interventions have been explored to improve glycaemic control in GDM, no single dietary approach has proven consistently effective in improving health outcomes. We conducted a patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) activity

Suggestions for Culturally Adapted Interventions to Treat Substance Use in Immigrants.

Immigrant populations experience unique sociocultural, structural, and linguistic barriers that shape substance use disorder (SUD) risk, treatment engagement, and outcomes. Conventional treatment models often fail to account for these complexities, contributing to disparities in care. This systematic review evaluates specific culturally adapted interventions for SUD treatment in immigrant populations across diverse sociocultural and regional contexts, identifying which strategies improve engagement and outcomes, and highlighting gaps in their development and evaluation. A systematic search of

Co-designing a novel intervention for prison staff affected by moral injury: a protocol.

Background: Exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) can contribute towards serious mental disorders. Prisons are uniquely challenging environments where staff must fulfil competing roles of security, care, and rehabilitation. Currently no manualised intervention for moral injury-related distress exists for prison staff. Here we describe the 'Co-designing a program for Addressing staff wellbeing and Reducing moral injury Experiences' (CARE) study protocol, which aims to co-develop an intervention to prevent and respond to moral injury-related ill health. Methods: Data will be co

Suicidal Behavior in Women as a Risk Factor Generated by the Invisibilization of Their Affective Sexual Diversity, Gender Identity and LGTBphobia.

Introduction: Suicidal manifestations during the invisibilization of sex-gender diversity arise from various factors. The link between internalized and externalized LGBTphobia and suicide is crucial, as both forms of discrimination can increase suicidal behaviors. Informal social networks are vital, offering support and community, but they can also exacerbate isolation if not managed properly. Research Objective: To analyze the manifestations of suicidal behaviors experienced during the period of invisibilization of gender diversity, considering the interrelation between internalized/externali

Perceived clinical challenges when treating patients from different cultures: A study among psychiatry trainees in Norway.

The growing number of migrant patients in western countries calls for better cross-cultural competence among health providers. As workplaces, hospitals have become increasingly multicultural, and many doctors are themselves of foreign origin, including psychiatrists. The aims of this study were to explore what clinical challenges International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and native-born Norwegian doctors training in psychiatry perceived when treating patients from other cultures, and what factors might be associated with such cross-cultural challenges. We developed a six-item inventory of perceiv
