Within three generations of one family four patients were found to have the carpal tunnel syndrome. In father and son, symptoms commenced in the first decade, and in both patients the median nerves were found to be constricted under the transverse carpal ligaments. The only other operative finding was considerably thickening of the transverse carpal ligaments in the father. Thickening of the transverse carpal ligaments is unusual in patients with the carpal tunnel syndrome but is a common finding in the relatively few patients with familial carpel tunnel syndrome so far described in the litera

A syndrome of slowly progressive muscle weakness with scapulo-ilio-peroneal distribution and cardiopathy was identified in 26 members of two families. Inheritance was autosomal dominant. Onset of the disease was between 17 and 42 years. Cardiopathy did not antedate skeletal muscle disease and patients had no symptoms of cardiopathy until a late phase of the disease. Initial ECG changes were non-specific, disturbances of conduction and impulse formation developed subsequently. Skeletal muscle biopsies showed neurogenic and myopathic changes with inflammatory cell reaction and perivascular cuffi

Saltatory conduction of action potentials (APs) through nodes of Ranvier (NRs) is essential for the rapid and precise conduction of neuronal signals along heavily myelinated axons. However, in demyelinating diseases, saltatory conduction becomes impaired, leading to sensory and motor dysfunctions. At NRs of normal heavily myelinated nerves, APs are depolarized by voltage-gated Na+ channels and repolarized mainly by K+ currents flowing through two-pore-domain K+ channels (K2P). Interestingly, although voltage-gated K+ channels are present at and around NRs, they exhibit only limited activity an

OBJECTIVES: High-frequency spinal cord stimulation (SCS) at 1000 Hz was shown to reduce evoked compound action potential (ECAP) amplitude, likely owing to asynchronous firing of dorsal column (DC) axons. To investigate the relationship between SCS parameters and DC axon activation, we analyzed ECAP morphology across different stimulation frequencies and pulse widths (PWs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (200-400 g) were implanted with an epidural lead. To study SCS frequency effects, baseline recordings were taken at 2 Hz, followed by tests at 50, 200, 500, and 1000 Hz,

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is a genetic multisystem neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cerebellar ataxia, oculocutaneous telangiectasia, extrapyramidal involvement, peripheral sensorimotor neuropathy, immunodeficiency, pulmonary disease, and an increased risk of malignancy that ultimately determines the shortened lifespan in many patients. A-T nerve ultrasonographic characteristics remain underexplored. This pilot study aimed to characterize the ultrasonographic morphology of peripheral nerves in patients with A-T.
METHODS: Ultrasound cross-sectional areas (CSAs)

OBJECTIVE: To investigate motor axonal excitability in multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) associated with involuntary muscle activity.
METHODS: Two MMN patients with continuous involuntary finger movements (MMNifm) were compared to 11 patients without movements (MMNnfm). Clinical examination, EMG of the abductor pollicis brevis muscle, nerve conduction studies, motor unit number estimation, excitability studies, and mathematical modeling were conducted in the patients with MMN and compared to controls.
RESULTS: Weakness, axonal loss, conduction block, or both occurred in the median nerve in t

BACKGROUND: We aimed to identify different Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) subtypes, demyelination, axonal degeneration, and reversible conduction failure (RCF) as early as possible by analyzing the initial clinical and electrophysiological examinations.
METHODS: This study retrospectively collected GBS patients between October 2018 and December 2022 at Beijing Tiantan Hospital. The diagnostic criteria for the initial electrophysiological study were based on Rajabally's criteria, and the criteria for the serial electrophysiological study were based on Uncini's criteria. All subjects underwent c

OBJECTIVE: To measure neuromagnetic fields of ulnar neuropathy patients at the elbow after electrical stimulation and evaluate ulnar nerve function at the elbow with high spatial resolution.
METHODS: A superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer system recorded neuromagnetic fields of the ulnar nerve at the elbow after electrical stimulation at the wrist in 16 limbs of 16 healthy volunteers and 21 limbs of 20 patients with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow. After artifact removal, neuromagnetic field signals were processed into current distributions, which were superimposed onto X-ra

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is an immune-mediated disease that mainly affects the peripheral nerves and nerve roots and typically presents with distal dominant motor and sensory disturbances as clinical symptoms. Central nervous system (CNS) demyelination with inflammation occurs infrequently in patients with CIDP. Here, we present a unique autopsy report of CIDP causing severe demyelination along the entire spinal cord. A Japanese woman exhibited progressive muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, sensory disturbances, and tremors in her upper and lower extremiti

BACKGROUND: Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by amyloid fibril deposition. The TTR c.148G > T mutation (V30L) in ATTR is rarely reported, and its biochemical properties are unknown.
METHODS: Seven patients and two asymptomatic carriers from two unrelated families diagnosed with V30L variant of ATTR were included. Data on clinical manifestations, laboratory examination, electrophysiology, ophthalmological corneal confocal microscopy (CCM), pathology and molecular biological experiments was collected and analyzed.
RESULTS: Most patients
