The rabbit rectococcygeus: a ganglion-free parasympathetically innervated preparation.

1 Isolated, desheathed preparations of the rabbit rectococcygeus muscle were relatively insensitive to spasmogens other than muscarinic drugs. Transmural stimulation with 1-50 pulses (0.2-0.4 ms at 10 Hz) elicited graded twitches which were abolished by tetrodotoxin and were therefore neurogenic; longer pulses sometimes triggered tetrodotoxin-resistant myogenic contractions.2 Twitches elicited by 0.2-0.4 ms pulses were due to post-ganglionic excitation because they were not reduced by hexamethonium, pentolinium or dimethyltubocurarine, or by ganglion-paralyzing concentrations of nicotine.3 The

The functional organization of the parasympathetic secretory innervation of the submandibular gland.

1. In cats the hypoglossal and chorda-lingual nerves were cut and their central ends sewn to the peripheral end of the latter nerve. At monthly intervals the sensitivity of the submandibular gland to a secretory agent was then estimated.2 When the supersensitivity resulting from the decentralization of the gland had been lowered to a constant level acute experiments were made. Electrical stimulation of both nerves caused secretion, which was abolished by ganglion blocking drugs and atropine.3. Simultaneous stimulation of the nerves at frequencies subliminal for each nerve did not cause any sec

Immediate effect of slow pace bhastrika pranayama on blood pressure and heart rate.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the immediate effect of slow pace bhastrika pranayama (respiratory rate 6/min) for 5 minutes on heart rate and blood pressure and the effect of the same breathing exercise for the same duration of time (5 minutes) following oral intake of hyoscine-N-butylbromide (Buscopan), a parasympathetic blocker drug. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Heart rate and blood pressure of volunteers (n = 39, age = 25-40 years) was recorded following standard procedure. First, subjects had to sit comfortably in an easy and steady posture (sukhasana) on a fairly soft s

Acute urinary tract complications following general surgical procedures.

The most frequent postoperative urinary problem after various types of general operations is urinary retention. It may be due to previously unrecognized dynamic obstruction, but is more often psychogenic or due to a temporary disturbance in function of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Catheterization may be done safely as a means of preventing over-distention of the bladder. Irritative postoperative lesions are usually due to trigonitis, cystitis or pyelitis. The immediate trauma of pelvic operation is sometimes followed by infection. Careful study will reveal the cause and…

[Overview of pharmacological mechanisms controlling micturition in the central nervous system].

The functions of the lower urinary tract, to storage and periodically release urine, are dependent on the activity of smooth and striated muscles in the bladder, urethra and external urethral sphincter. This activity is in turn controlled by neural circuits not only in the periphery, but also in the central nervous system (CNS). During urine storage, the outlet is closed and the bladder smooth muscle is quiescent by the neural control mechanism mainly organized in the spinal cord. When bladder volume reaches the micturition threshold, activation of a micturition center in the dorsolateral pons

The left ventricle increases contractility in response to baroreceptor unloading, which is sympathetically mediated in the anesthetized rat.

Contemporary discussion of the baroreflex includes the efferent vascular-sympathetic and cardiovagal arms. Since sympathetic postganglionic neurons also innervate the left ventricle (LV), it is often assumed that the LV produces a sympathetically mediated increase in contractility during baroreceptor unloading, but this has not been characterized using a load-independent index of contractility. We aimed to determine 1) whether LV contractility increases in response to baroreceptor unloading and 2) whether such increases are mediated via the sympathetic or parasympathetic arm of the autonomic n

Reduction of Cardiac Autonomic Modulation and Increased Sympathetic Activity by Heart Rate Variability in Patients With Long COVID.

Although several clinical manifestations of persistent long coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have been documented, their effects on the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous system over the long term remain unclear. Thus, we examined the presence of alterations in cardiac autonomic functioning in individuals with long-term manifestations. The study was conducted from October 2020 to May 2021, and an autonomic assessment was performed to collect heart rate data for the heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. The study participants were divided into the long COVID clinical group, the intragroup, whi

Cardiac Autonomic Modulation and Anti-Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) Antibodies in Subclinical Hypothyroidism: Does a Correlation Exist?

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system. Anti-thyroid antibodies like anti-TPO and anti-Thyroglobulin have long been associated with thyroid dysfunction and abnormal thyroid profile testing. Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCHypo) is characterized by elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) with normal thyroid hormones. We hypothesize that autonomic function may be deranged in anti-TPO positive sub-clinical hypothyroid cases, even before the onset of overt hypothyroidism. OBJECTIVES: To i

Parasympathetic blockade attenuates augmented pancreatic polypeptide but not insulin secretion in Pima Indians.

There is evidence from animal models of obesity and type 2 diabetes that increased parasympathetic vagal input to the pancreas contributes to hyperinsulinemia. Compared with Caucasians, Pima Indians have a high risk of type 2 diabetes and exhibit marked hyperinsulinemia and elevated plasma levels of pancreatic polypeptide (PP), an islet hormone considered a surrogate marker of parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) drive to the pancreas. To test if hyperinsulinemia in Pima Indians is due to increased vagal input to the beta-cell, we examined the effect of PNS blockade in 17 Caucasian (aged 35 +/…

Electrostimulation of the lingual nerve by an intraoral device may lead to salivary gland regeneration: A case series study.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland function is controlled by the salivary reflex, whose efferent arm is composed by the parasympathetic and the sympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system. Parenchymal injury is the main salivary gland involvement of Sjögren's syndrome and head and neck radiotherapy, but neural damage has been reported as well. Recently an intraoral device for electrostimulation of the lingual nerve in vicinity to the lower third molar has been introduced. At this point this nerve carries efferent fibers for the innervation of the submandibular, sublingual and several minor s

Interoceptive autonomic regulation in typical development and autism spectrum disorder: A computational model integrating multiple physiological systems.

BACKGROUND: Interoceptive cardiovascular signals, including heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP), arise from coordinated sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic (PSNS) regulation and contribute to affective and cognitive processes. Although atypical autonomic nervous system (ANS) modulation has been reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the dynamical structure underlying branch-specific coordination remains insufficiently characterized. OBJECTIVE: To estimate latent ANS regulatory structure in typically developing (TD) and ASD individuals using a computational modeling framework. METH

A Comprehensive and Critical Evaluation of Autonomic Nervous System Impairment in Patients with Wilson Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Wilson's disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive disorder of copper metabolism with heterogeneous hepatic and neurological manifestations. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) involvement in WD is poorly recognized and remains inadequately studied, despite its potential to cause significant morbidity if unrecognized. This study aimed to assess the presence and severity of autonomic dysfunction in patients with WD and to examine its association with clinical and biochemical parameters using standardized autonomic tests and comprehensive cardiac evaluation. METHODS: A comparative cross-sec

Dynamic changes in cardiac autonomic function persist in the postacute phase after SARS-CoV-2 infection in a hamster model of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction is a central feature of long coronavirus disease syndrome, yet little is known about how it develops during and after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the time course of dynamic changes in linear and nonlinear heart rate variability measurements as indices of ANS function for up to 2 months after infection. METHODS: Hamsters implanted with radiotelemetry devices were inoculated with SARS-CoV-2. Electrocardiograms and subpleural pressures were recorded befo

Heart Rate Variability as an Indicator of Autonomic Nervous System Disturbance in Behcet's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystemic vasculiti where cardiac involvement is not common. Previous studies have shown that the incidence of ventricular arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death (SCD) is higher in patients with BD than in the healthy population. Among various possible explanations, autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction has been suggested. Few studies have evaluated ANS function in patients with BD, and the results obtained are controversial. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess cardiac autonomic function by heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with BD; to evaluate ci

24-h continuous non-invasive multiparameter home monitoring of vitals in patients with Rett syndrome by an innovative wearable technology: evidence of an overlooked chronic fatigue status.

BACKGROUND: Sleep is disturbed in Rett syndrome (RTT), a rare and progressive neurodevelopmental disorder primarily affecting female patients (prevalence 7.1/100,000 female patients) linked to pathogenic variations in the X-linked methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene. Autonomic nervous system dysfunction with a predominance of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) over the parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) is reported in RTT, along with exercise fatigue and increased sudden death risk. The aim of the present study was to test the feasibility of a continuous 24 h non-invasive home monit…

Severe tauopathy and axonopathy in the medulla oblongata in Alzheimer's disease implicate the changes in autonomic nervous function.

The autonomic dysfunctions in Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been identified from many clinical studies, however, there is still a lack of evidence directly verifying the structural abnormalities of the autonomic nervous system in AD. Human medulla oblongatas from four AD patients or five non-AD subjects were obtained and observed by using immunohistochemical staining of hyperphosphorylated tau and Aβ amyloid, and post-mortem tracing techniques. We found distinct axonal and somatic immunoreactivities for the tau markers AT8 and Tau-5 in the different areas of the medulla oblongata in AD patient
