Maljkovic and Nakayama first showed that visual search efficiency can be influenced by priming effects. Even "pop-out" targets (defined by unique color) are judged quicker if they appear at the same location and/or in the same color as on the preceding trial, in an unpredictable sequence. Here, we studied the potential neural correlates of such priming in human visual search using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We found that repeating either the location or the color of a singleton target led to repetition suppression of blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) activity in brain regi

In a previous study [Sperling, A. J., Lu, Z. L., Manis, F. R., & Seidenberg, M. S. (2003). Selective deficits in magnocellular processing: A "phantom contour" study. Neuropsychologia, 41, 1422-1429] we found that dyslexic children were relatively slower in processing achromatic phantom contours. The maximum temporal frequency at which they could identify achromatic phantom contours was correlated with reading ability and orthographic skill in particular. Here we investigated whether similar deficits could be identified in adults. Poor readers were chosen who scored below the 25th percentile on

AIMS: Optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH), which is defined as a congenital deficiency of retinal ganglion cells, may also involve more distal layers of the retina. We investigated electrophysiological function of the retina in ONH using electroretinograms (ERGs).
METHODS: ERGs were recorded from 48 subjects (3.5-35 months) with unilateral or bilateral ONH. Pattern reversal (4 degrees checks) was presented under chloral hydrate sedation, using an optical system to correct a cycloplegic refraction. A photopic flash stimulus was also used. Fundus photographs were used to measure the disk diameter/disk

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of reading instruction on fMRI brain activation in children with dyslexia.
BACKGROUND: fMRI differences between dyslexic and control subjects have most often involved phonologic processing tasks. However, a growing body of research documents the role of morphologic awareness in reading and reading disability.
METHODS: The authors developed tasks to probe brain activation during phoneme mapping (assigning sounds to letters) and morpheme mapping (understanding the relationship of suffixed words to their roots). Ten children with dyslexia and 11 normal readers p

Models of visual processing often include an initial parallel stage that is restricted to relatively low-level features, whereas activation of higher-level object descriptions is generally assumed to require attention. Here we report that even high-level object representations can be accessed in parallel: in a rapid animal versus non-animal categorization task, both behavioral and electrophysiological data show that human subjects were as fast at responding to two simultaneously presented natural images as they were to a single one. The implication is that even complex natural images can be pr

Levin (1996, 2000) reported that white subjects search for black targets more quickly than they search for white targets, suggesting that black faces are perceived as having a feature that is lacking in white faces. Here we test one of the implications of this asymmetry by having subjects search for same-race (SR) and cross-race (CR) faces that are distorted to look less like each other (producing caricatures that enhance race-specifying features), or are distorted to look more like each other (a prototypical distortion expected to reduce the salience of race-specifying features). Experiments

Prior to anesthesia with propofol for gastrointestinal endoscopy, sets of pictures were presented to 20 children and adolescents (M age = 12 years). Word pairs (e.g., "hiking-woods") were presented via earphones after the children were anesthetized. Upon regaining consciousness, the children were tested for explicit memory of both the picture sets and word pairs by free recall, cued recall, and yes/no recognition. Implicit memory was tested by free association to category cues for the pictures and by word association for the word pairs. Postoperative testing revealed retrograde memory for mate

The authors report a 63-year-old man with a history of brief isolated manic episodes who became persistently hypomanic after a small right thalamic infarct. Detailed behavioral and neuropsychologic assessment were performed 18 months after the stroke and revealed a prosopoaffective agnosia as the foremost cognitive disorder, i.e., an impairment in the identification of emotional facial expressions with preserved discrimination of facial identity. Difficulties in reasoning on humorous material and other signs of mild right hemisphere dysfunction were present, but other perceptual, frontal and a

Following a general review of the literature linking right hemisphere dysfunction to psychoses in general and Capgras delusion (CD) in particular, two studies are described that confirm the link. Study 1 revealed that, compared with matched psychiatric controls, 3 CD patients were particularly poor at matching pairs of faces shown briefly in the left visual field-which implies dysfunctioning right hemisphere performance. However there was no difference in performance when the faces appeared bilaterally, which fails to support the hypothesis that poor interhemispheric communication may give ris

A single case of Korsakoff's syndrome, showing classic circumscribed amnesia on traditional neuropsychological tests, performed a number of learning tasks previously used in primates to demonstrate the different anatomical basis of memory systems used to learn about the properties of objects or to learn about rules of responding. The patient (CJ) performed in a manner very similar to lesioned monkeys in that he could learn evaluative tasks (e.g. a red object is nice), but not rule based tasks (e.g. a red object means go left). In consequence CJ learned an object discrimination task in a manner

Tethered, adult female Sphodromantis lineola (Burr.) were presented with two groups of two-dimensional stimuli (i.e., 2-D lures) against various backgrounds. Lure Group 1 comprised various black rectangles in three different size arrays: each size array included a 2, 6, or 12 mm square, respectively, several 'worm' lures of a constant width (l2, edge perpendicular to the direction of movement, 3-30 mm), but varying in length (l1, parallel to the direction of movement, 6-114 mm), and several 'antiworm' lures of a constant length but varying width. Group 1 lures were presented against patterned

In a previous report, Bauer (1984) described the patient LF, who was unable to recognise familiar faces. Despite the inability to verbally identify familiar faces, psychophysiological examination revealed preserved covert processing of facial identity. Subsequent studies have demonstrated covert face recognition using behavioural tasks. Investigations of the patient PH showed normal face familiarity effects on matching, interference, priming, and learning tasks, while overt recognition was completely absent (De Haan, Young and Newcombe, 1987b). The use of different methodologies has led to dif

The shifting of attention to visual stimuli was studied in twenty patients with early Parkinson's disease (stage I or II as defined by the Hoehn and Yahr scale) and twenty normal controls matched for age, sex and intellectual status. Both groups were screened to exclude dementia, psychiatric disease and other neurological abnormalities. The speed of shifting attention to visual stimuli was measured using the cost and benefit paradigm. The results showed an overall increase in response latencies in patients with early Parkinson's disease compared to the Control group, but without a concomitant

The sentence comprehension skills of a 6-year-old girl with callosal agenesis were compared to skills of three other children matched for age and verbal IQ. Sentence-picture matching and acting out tasks were used with reversible active, passive, and center-embedded relative clause sentences. The acallosal subject showed a deficit in syntactic comprehension. The difficulty was due to a failure to assign correct semantic roles to some sentence forms, not to a lack of ability to discriminate among the sentence forms. The data are consistent with a previous report by M. Dennis (1977, In Topics in

Huntington's disease (HD) is a genetic neurodegenerative disorder that affects not only the motor but also the cognitive and the neuropsychiatric domain. In particular, deficits in mental state recognition may emerge already at early pre-manifest stages of the disease. The aim of this research was to explore the relation between visual scanning behavior and complex mental state recognition in individuals with pre-manifest HD (preHD). Eighteen preHD and eighteen age- and gender-matched healthy controls took the revised "Reading the Mind in the Eyes" test while their eye-movements were tracked.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) have a cognitive preference to negatively evaluate emotional information. In particular, the preferential biases in prosodic emotion recognition in SAD have been much less explored. The present study aims to investigate whether SAD patients retain negative evaluation biases across visual and auditory modalities when given sufficient response time to recognise emotions.
METHODS: Thirty-one SAD patients and 31 age- and gender-matched healthy participants completed a culturally suitable non-verbal emotion recognition task and received cli

UNLABELLED: While neurotypical individuals over-attend to the left-side of centrally-presented visual stimuli, this bias is reduced in individuals with autism/high levels of autistic traits. Because this difference is hypothesized to reflect relative reductions in right-hemisphere activation, it follows that increasing right-hemisphere activation should increase leftward bias. We administered transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the right posterior parietal cortex to individuals with low levels (n = 19) and high levels (n = 19) of autistic traits whilst they completed a greyscal

Cognitive awareness in patients with schizophrenia is crucial for clinical management of cognitive deficits. Traditional approaches using self-report inventories have questionable validity and reliability. Using the Feeling-of-Knowing (FOK) procedure to measure metamemory might overcome such weakness. A cross-sectional study comparing 40 patients and 40 demographically matched normal controls, using a recall-judgment-recognition (RJR) procedure and the Hamann coefficient was conducted to examine whether patients with schizophrenia have FOK deficits and what neurocognitive mechanism might accou

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome is a severely disabling neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the X-linked MECP2 gene. Very little is known about its cognitive phenotype and nothing about recognition of emotional expression, a key factor for social interaction and communication. Using eye tracking technology, a technique uniquely suited for studying cognition in this disorder, we examined this ability here.
METHODS: Rett syndrome female patients (n = 37; 2-31 years) and a typically developing age- and gender-matched comparison group (n =34; 2-30 years) were assessed on recognition of t
