There is increasing consensus that disruptive behavior disorders and syndromes (DBDs) are identifiable in preschool children. There is also concomitant recognition of the limitations of the current DBD nosology for distinguishing disruptive behavior symptoms from the normative misbehavior of early childhood. In particular, there appears to be substantial insensitivity to heterotypic manifestations of this developmental period and problems in identifying meaningful heterogeneity. OBJECTIVE: We aim to evaluate the psychodynamic model for panic disorder (PD) formulated by Shear et al. (1993), comparing PD patients and major depression (MD) patients.
METHOD: We evaluated these parameters in open interviews in 10 PD patients and 10 patients with MD (DSM-IV). The data were recorded on videotape and were examined by 5 diagnostic blind appraisers.

The relationship between abuse and psychiatric diagnoses was investigated in two groups of physically abused adolescents, 57 living in homes with interparental violence and 32 in homes without such violence, and in 96 nonabused adolescents living in nonviolent homes. Adolescents in the first group were found to be at greater risk for depression, separation anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder than were those in the second group. Adolescents in the first group also appeared more vulnerable to anxiety and depression.

Two cases of mania in homosexual men with AIDS are presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the psychodynamic and psychosocial factors thought to be aetiologically significant. AIDS is seen both as an example of a terminal illness, and also as creating unique difficulties. It is suggested that integrative rather than reductionist thinking is needed in cases which under DSM-III-R would simply be classified as "organic mood disorder", that is, that all causal and contributory factors need to be considered in affective disorder occurring in the physically ill.

Prior research has noted a relationship between an individual's height in adolescence and their personality development later in life.
