Active high-frequency vestibulo-ocular reflex and seasickness susceptibility.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The vestibular autorotation test (VAT) examines responses to active head oscillations at frequencies between 2 and 6 Hz in the horizontal and vertical planes while the subject is fixating a visible target. At these frequencies, the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is the main source of eye movement for ocular stabilization, although other visual and somatosensory information interacts with the response. Because the neural mismatch theory places emphasis on multimodal sensory interactions as the cause of motion sickness, using the VAT, which measures eye movements resulting

The Agonist-Antagonist Myoneural Interface in a Transtibial Amputation.

BACKGROUND: The agonist-antagonist myoneural interface (AMI) technique at the time of transtibial amputation involves the use of agonist-antagonist muscle pairs to restore natural contraction-stretch relationships and to improve proprioceptive feedback when utilizing a prosthetic limb1. DESCRIPTION: Utilizing the standard incision for a long posterior myofasciocutaneous flap, the lateral and medial aspects of the limb are dissected, identifying and preserving the superficial peroneal and saphenous nerve, respectively. The tendons of the tibialis anterior and peroneus longus are transected dis

Effect of age-related hyperkyphosis on open and closed-loop postural control in older adults.

Center-of-pressure (CoP) oscillations represent the neuromuscular system's response to control the body's center of mass. In older adults, hyperkyphosis alters body alignment, increases sway, and impairs proprioception. While some studies have explored hyperkyphosis effects on CoP displacements, the underlying neuromuscular mechanisms remain underexplored. This studyinvestigated hyperkyphosis impacts on the postural control using the stabilogram diffusion analysis (SDA) to assess interplay between open and closed-loop control. Thirty-eight older adults with a mean kyphosis angle of 57.8 ± 8.4°…

Relationship between Tilt Sensation Ability and Lower Limb Injuries in Junior Athletes.

The purpose of this study was to devise a tilt sensation measurement method to evaluate ankle proprioception and to examine its reliability. It was also used to determine the relationship among tilt sensation abilities, physical development, and lower limb injuries in junior athletes. In this study, a step platform created tilt angles. Participants with eye masks answered "yes" or "no" to sensing a tilt, evaluated over nine or seven trials. Experiment 1 involved 22 university students (20.6 ± 0.9 years). The minimum angle at which a tilt could be sensed while standing on both feet was determin…

Experimentally induced pain increases absolute but not relative errors and reduces variability in joint repositioning of the knee joint in healthy participants.

BACKGROUND: Joint position sense (JPS) plays an important role in knee joint function. Despite the possible influence of pain on the proprioceptive system, the effects of experimental muscle pain on knee JPS have not been studied. OBJECTIVES: To investigate if experimentally induced muscle pain affects knee JPS in healthy participants. METHODS: Measurements of knee JPS were conducted before and after the injection of 5.8% sterile hypertonic saline in the vastus medialis muscle of 26 healthy physically active adults. Knee JPS was assessed through a passive/active repositioning paradigm in tar

Subcortical contributions to the sense of body ownership.

The sense of body ownership (i.e. the feeling that our body or its parts belong to us) plays a key role in bodily self-consciousness and is believed to stem from multisensory integration. Experimental paradigms such as the rubber hand illusion have been developed to allow the controlled manipulation of body ownership in laboratory settings, providing effective tools for investigating malleability in the sense of body ownership and the boundaries that distinguish self from other. Neuroimaging studies of body ownership converge on the involvement of several cortical regions, including the premot

Knee position sense and knee flexor neuromuscular function are similarly altered after two submaximal eccentric bouts.

PURPOSE: This study examined eccentric-induced fatigue effects on knee flexor (KF) neuromuscular function and on knee position sense. This design was repeated across two experimental sessions performed 1 week apart to investigate potential repeated bout effects. METHODS: Sixteen participants performed two submaximal bouts of KF unilateral eccentric contractions until reaching a 20% decrease in maximal voluntary isometric contraction force. Knee position sense was evaluated with position-matching tasks in seated and prone positions at 40° and 70° of knee flexion so that KF were either antagoni

Sensory inflow manipulation induces learning-like phenomena in motor behavior.

PURPOSE: Perceptual and goal-directed behaviors may be improved by repetitive sensory stimulations without practice-based training. Focal muscle vibration (f-MV) modulating the spatiotemporal properties of proprioceptive inflow is well-suited to investigate the effectiveness of sensory stimulation in influencing motor outcomes. Thus, in this study, we verified whether optimized f-MV stimulation patterns might affect motor control of upper limb movements. METHODS: To answer this question, we vibrated the slightly tonically contracted anterior deltoid (AD), posterior deltoid (PD), and pectorali

People watching: The perception of the relative body proportions of the self and others.

We have an abundance of perceptual information from multiple modalities specifying our body proportions. Consequently, it seems reasonable for researchers to assume that we have an accurate perception of our body proportions. In contrast to this intuition, recent research has shown large, striking distortions in people's perceptions of the relative proportions of their own bodies. Specifically, individuals show large distortions when estimating the length of their body parts with a corporal metric, such as the hand, but not with a non-corporal object of the same length (Linkenauger et al., 201

Hip proprioceptors preferentially modulate reflexes of the leg in human spinal cord injury.

Stretch-sensitive afferent feedback from hip muscles has been shown to trigger long-lasting, multijoint reflex responses in people with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). These reflexes could have important implications for control of leg movements during functional activities, such as walking. Because the control of leg movement relies on reflex regulation at all joints of the limb, we sought to determine whether stretch of hip muscles modulates reflex activity at the knee and ankle and, conversely, whether knee and ankle stretch afferents affect hip-triggered reflexes. A custom-built servomot

Neuropathic pain: an evolutionary hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Whereas nociceptive pain has a clear survival value, the evolutionary origins of neuropathic pain remains unexplained. OBJECTIVES: It is argued that neuropathic pain is an adaptation that has evolved to detect non-specific damage to the nervous system, and that it operates on the same principles of an analogous hypothesis that has been put forward to explain the evolutionary utility of motion sickness. Whereas motion sickness has been proposed to arise from an inappropriate activation of a system evolved to respond to incoherence between vestibular and visual reference frames as a

Affine differential geometry analysis of human arm movements.

Humans interact with their environment through sensory information and motor actions. These interactions may be understood via the underlying geometry of both perception and action. While the motor space is typically considered by default to be Euclidean, persistent behavioral observations point to a different underlying geometric structure. These observed regularities include the "two-thirds power law", which connects path curvature with velocity, and "local isochrony", which prescribes the relation between movement time and its extent. Starting with these empirical observations, we have deve

The role of instability with resistance training.

There are many instances in daily life and sport in which force must be exerted when an individual performing the task is in an unstable condition. Instability can decrease the externally-measured force output of a muscle while maintaining high muscle activation. The high muscle activation of limbs and trunk when unstable can be attributed to the increased stabilization functions. The increased stress associated with instability has been postulated to promote greater neuromuscular adaptations, such as decreased co-contractions, improved coordination, and confidence in performing a skill. Dizziness in discus throwers is related to motion sickness generated while spinning.

While both discus and hammer throwing involve rotating movements resulting in the throw of an object, discus throwers sometimes report dizziness, a condition never experienced by hammer throwers. We investigated whether this susceptibility was related to the sensitivity of the thrower or to the type of throwing achieved. For the latter, we compared the determining features of gesture, gaze stabilization and projectile trajectory in both sports. A total of 22 high-level sportsmen in these 2 disciplines, half of them practising both sports, were interviewed. Slow motion video recordings of discu

Vestibular reactions to spaceflight: human factors issues.

Vestibular function, along with other sensory systems influencing spatial orientation, can have a profound influence on the ability of astronauts to function effectively. Beyond the well-known problems of space motion sickness, vestibular effects can influence astronaut well-being and performance during all phases of a space mission. This paper discusses some of the major vestibular reactions affecting human factors encountered in all space missions, and covers them chronologically in the following sequence: launch, early on-orbit, late on-orbit, EVA, artificial gravity, re-entry, and post-lan

M.I.T./Canadian vestibular experiments on the Spacelab-1 mission: 4. Space motion sickness: symptoms, stimuli, and predictability.

Space sickness symptoms were observed by 4 specially trained observers on Spacelab-1. Three reported persistent symptoms, and vomited repeatedly during the first and/or second day of flight. Head movements on all axes were provocative, particularly in pitch and roll. Head acceleration data recorded from 2 symptomatic crewmen showed that after several hours of physical activity in orbit, symptoms appeared, and thereafter both crewmen were compelled to limit head movements. Firm body contact with motionless surfaces helped alleviate symptoms. When crewmembers floated into unfamiliar body orienta

The postural reaction to the drop of a hindlimb support in the standing cat remains following sensorimotor cortical ablation.

The postural response to an unexpected drop of either hindlimb platform was studied in the freely standing cat. The vertical forces, the forelimb electromyographic (EMG) activities and the movement of the trunk were analysed. A stereotyped diagonal pattern of support was observed. The imposed unloading of one hindlimb was followed by unloading of the diagonally opposite forelimb and loading of the two other limbs. In the ipsilateral loaded forelimb, the force increase is preceded by an activation of the biceps and is concomitant with a triceps coactivation. In the contralateral unloaded foreli
