OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of different clinical and anatomical factors on the vascularity of uterine myomas
METHODS: The study group included 195 patients, 153 premenopausal and 42 postmenopausal. Four hundred five myomas, 316 in the first group and 89 in the second, were studied by color Doppler ultrasound. Differences in the visualization of blood flow and resistance index (RI) were analyzed according to several factors, including: menopausal status, phase of menstrual cycle, duration of menopause, size and location of the myomas, and secondary changes within the myomas.

We report the successful treatment of a 36-year-old man with recalcitrant pemphigus vulgaris by pulsed intravenous immunoglobulin therapy, dexamethasone and cyclophosphamide. In addition to clinical resolution, indirect immunofluorescence antibodies have since largely been undetectable.

Most patients with chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) show a good initial response to treatment with corticosteroids. However the disease relapses in more than 90% when steroid dosage is reduced. Recently 100% success was reported for a new therapeutic protocol in 12 patients (ranging in age from 13-60, half of them women) with chronic ITP refractory to corticosteroids or to splenectomy. Pulsed laser can be effective in the treatment of naevus of Ota, some cafe au lait macules, lentigines and junctional naevi. It is less useful for compound, intradermal or congenital naevi, chloasma, or post-inflammatory pigmentation. Hydroquinone and broad spectrum sunscreen are routinely used after treatment.

The pineal melatonin patterns were measured in rats kept 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 16, or 28 days under the lighting conditions with a dark period of 90 min only (from 18:00 to 19:30 h). The samples were collected at 30-min intervals, and melatonin was measured by radioimmunoassay. During the first and second dark pulse the melatonin levels were low, but thereafter they were significantly higher than the usual daytime levels. The increase of the synthesis started within 15 min after the light offset. The results suggest a stable adjustment of the melatonin rhythm by the dark pulses.

The flashlamp-pumped pulsed dye laser (FPDL) is a dye laser with 585-nm wavelength and 300- to 450-microseconds pulse width and has been demonstrated to effectively and safely treat port-wine stains, telangiectases and superficial hemangiomas. We report 2 cases of pyogenic granuloma following the treatment with FPDL.

A 50-year-old man with chronic lymphocytic leukemia experienced two episodes of community-acquired legionnaires' disease. For determining whether this was the result of relapse or reinfection, Legionella pneumophila strains, cultured from sputum specimens and his home water supply, were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Few studies have addressed the significance of umbilical artery pulsed Doppler velocimetry in multiple gestation. Level II ultrasonography and pulsed Doppler studies were performed in 94 twin pairs and seven sets of triplets, which yielded data on 207 fetuses. Eight patients with severe pedal ischemia in the presence of palpable foot pulses are described. All had atherosclerosis, and seven patients also had diabetes. The use of pulsed yellow light from a flash-lamp-pumped pulsed dye laser has provided a successful form of therapy to remove both the telangiectasias and irregular pigmentation associated with poikiloderma of Civatte. The short pulse duration and specificity of the interaction between yellow light and hemoglobin permit this technique to be performed on the thin skin of the neck without textural changes or scarring. Furthermore, use of the large beam diameter of this laser system allows for rapid treatment of large areas in a short period of time.
