OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the prophylactic effect of pentoxifylline (Ptx) on complications related to radiation.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Seventy-eight patients who had postoperative radiotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck were enrolled into a prospective study. Patients were randomly assigned to the Ptx group (40 patients) and the control group (38 patients). Ptx was given to the patients at a dose of 400 mg 3 times a day orally to a total of 1200 mg. We noted radiotherapy complications in each group.

In experiments on mice radioprotective properties of indraline, phenyleprine and melatonin were compared at topical application as an ointment at a place of local exposure of animal hind to a dose of 38.3 Gy of 60Co gamma-quanta. Factor of dose reduction was 1.27-1.32 for indraline (1-10% ointment) and 1.29 for phenyleprine (0.25% ointment). Antioxidants were low efficient at radiation skin burn. At later local radiation injuries, such as hind contracture, the efficiency of indraline was 1.33-1.5, that of phenyleprine was 1.28, and that of melatonine (2 and 5% ointment) was 1.23-1.47.

A retrospective review of the treatment of 15 breast cancer patients who received postoperative radiotherapy after a mastectomy and transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flap breast reconstruction was undertaken to determine the effects of postoperative irradiation on flap viability and cosmesis. Linear basal cell carcinoma, an uncommon variant of basal cell carcinoma, was first described in 1985. The cases of eight additional patients with this morphologically distinctive variant have been published subsequently. We describe a woman who sequentially developed three linear basal cell carcinomas located within her radiotherapy port. Including our patient, 12 linear basal cell carcinomas have been reported in 10 patients (4 men and 6 women) ranging from ages 40 to 77 years. Actinic brachial plexus lesions after mastectomy have been treated in 67 cases. Thirty-nine cases have been operated on, 31 of which by means of a free microvascular transfer of the greater omentum. Indications and contraindications of the procedure are discussed, as well as the types of anatomic-pathologic lesions that have been found, and the surgical technique that has been modified and improved over time is presented. Results indicate that free microvascular greater omentum transfer following neurolysis is currently the best method for relief of pain.

A modern version of surface brachytherapy, "topographic applicator brachytherapy" (TAB), can be used to treat early-stage nonmelanoma skin cancer (ES-NMSC).
