Contrast analysis of the relationship between the HRCT sign and new pathologic classification in small ground glass nodule-like lung adenocarcinoma.

PURPOSE: To perform contrast analysis of the relationship between high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) signs and new pathologic classification of small GGNs-like lung adenocarcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The HRCT data from 145 pathologically confirmed cases of small GGNs of lung adenocarcinoma were analysed retrospectively. The 145 cases of GGNs were divided into pre-invasive (PI) group (n = 46), micro-invasive adenocarcinoma (MIA) group (n = 48), and invasive adenocarcinoma (IAC) group (n = 51). HRCT imaging sign of GGNs in each group was assessed and compared. RESULTS: Significant

Non-inferior low-dose coronary computed tomography angiography image quality with knowledge-based iterative model reconstruction for overweight patients.

We investigated the feasibility of low-dose coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), using a prospective electrocardiogram (ECG)-triggered axial scan protocol, knowledge-based iterative model reconstruction (IMR), and fixed tube current, in overweight subjects. Forty non-overweight (group A; body-mass index [BMI] < 25 kg/m2) and 40 overweight individuals (group B; BMI = 25-30 kg/m2), who underwent CCTA for coronary artery disease screening, were retrospectively and consecutively enrolled. A 64-slice CT scanner was used at 100-kVp tube voltage and 150-mA tube current, and images were re

Heterogeneous Pulmonary Perfusion on Dual-Energy Computed Tomography: Faulty Postprocessing or New Artifact?

Iodine uptake in the lungs and intrathoracic lesions on postcontrast dual-energy computed tomography is used for evaluation of pulmonary embolism-related perfusion defects and pulmonary infarctions. It has been applied in characterization and treatment response assessment of lung and mediastinal abnormalities. We report a new imaging artifact or faulty image postprocessing in a commercially available rapid kV switching technique of dual-energy computed tomography, which can confound its clinical utility for evaluation of iodine uptake.

Catheter-Based Computed Tomography Angiography in Anterolateral Thigh Perforator Mapping of Chinese Patients.

BACKGROUND: During reconstructive surgery, anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap harvest is challenging due to variation and uncertainty in perforator distribution. We performed a pilot study to identify the predictive value of catheter-based computed tomography angiography (C-CTA) and traditional CTA (T-CTA) in ALT perforator mapping for patients whose ALT perforators were difficult to identify. METHODS: Thirty-four consecutive T-CTA/C-CTA-mapped ALT flaps were evaluated for extremity reconstruction. The perforator location, origin, and course were compared between T-CTA/C-CTA imaging and intraoper

An improved method for the automatic mapping of computed tomography numbers onto finite element models.

The assignment of bone tissue material properties is a fundamental step in the generation of subject-specific finite element models from computed tomography data. Aim of the present work is to investigate the influence of the material mapping algorithm on the results predicted by the finite element analysis. Two models, a coarse and a refined one, of a human ileum, femur and tibia, were generated from CT data and used for the tests. In addition a convergence analysis was carried out for the femur model, using six refinement levels, to verify whether the inclusion of the material properties wou

"Virtual" (Computed) Fractional Flow Reserve: Current Challenges and Limitations.

Fractional flow reserve (FFR) is the "gold standard" for assessing the physiological significance of coronary artery disease during invasive coronary angiography. FFR-guided percutaneous coronary intervention improves patient outcomes and reduces stent insertion and cost; yet, due to several practical and operator related factors, it is used in <10% of percutaneous coronary intervention procedures. Virtual fractional flow reserve (vFFR) is computed using coronary imaging and computational fluid dynamics modeling. vFFR has emerged as an attractive alternative to invasive FFR by delivering physi

Magnetic navigation in patients with coronary artery bypass grafting.

Magnetic navigation (MN) can precisely control a percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) guidewire or a device in three-dimensional space within the body without requiring reshaping of the tip to access vessels or areas of the heart that are often challenging using conventional wires. In this article we review and report on the use of magnetic navigation system in secondary revascularisation of coronary arterial bypass grafts (CABG). MN was successfully used in the secondary revascularisation of failed conventional CABG cases. Retrograde PCI through a LIMA is not only feasible but the wires

X-ray microtomography is a novel method for accurate evaluation of small-bowel mucosal morphology and surface area.

The often poorly orientated small-bowel mucosal biopsies taken for the diagnostics of celiac disease and other intestinal disorders are prone to misinterpretation. Furthermore, conventional histopathology has suboptimal sensitivity for early histopathological changes observed in short-term challenge studies. X-ray microtomography (micro-CT) is a promising new method for accurate imaging of human-derived biological samples. Here, we report that micro-CT could be utilized to create virtual reconstructions of endoscopically obtained intestinal biopsies. The formed digital 3D images enabled select

Diffusion tensor imaging quantifying the severity of chronic hepatitis in rats.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is mainly used for detecting white matter fiber in the brain. DTI was applied to assess fiber in liver disorders in previous studies. However, the data obtained have been insufficient in determining if DTI can be used to exactly stage chronic hepatitis. This study assessed the value of DTI for staging of liver fibrosis (F), necroinflammatory activity (A) and steatosis (S) with chronic hepatitis in rats. METHODS: Seventy male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into a control group(n = 10) and an experimental group(n = 60). The rat models of chronic hepa

Transmural myocardial mechanics during isovolumic contraction.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to resolve the 3-dimensional transmural heterogeneity in myocardial mechanics observed during the isovolumic contraction (IC) phase. BACKGROUND: Although myocardial deformation during IC is expected to be little, recent tissue Doppler imaging studies suggest dynamic myocardial motions during this phase with biphasic longitudinal tissue velocities in left ventricular (LV) long-axis views. A unifying understanding of myocardial mechanics that would account for these dynamic aspects of IC is lacking. METHODS: We determined the time course of 3-dimensional finite strains in

Emergency localization of radioactive seeds lost during intracoronary brachytherapy.

Recently, it has been reported that brachytherapy catheters ruptured in vivo. Localization of lost beta-radiation-emitting seeds is a problem because no appropriate technique is available that is rapid and precise. We developed a technique to localize beta-emitting seeds utilizing the effect that beta-radiation induces bremsstrahlung. The loss of a single radioactive source was simulated in an Alderson Phantom representing a human body. The beta-induced bremsstrahlung could be detected selectively by a gamma-camera. The position of the radioactive seed could be located within 5 min with an acc
