Frequent expression of somatostatin receptor 2a in olfactory neuroblastomas: a new and distinctive feature.

Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a malignant neuroendocrine neoplasm with a usually slow course, but with considerable recurrence rate. Many neuroendocrine tumors have shown good response to the treatment with somatostatin analogs and somatostatin radioreceptor therapy. In ONBs, there are scarce data on somatostatin-based treatment and the cellular expression of somatostatin receptors (SSTR), the prerequisite for binding and effect of somatostatin on normal and tumor cells. The aim of our study was to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of SSTR2A and SSTR5 in a cohort of 40 ONBs. In

Tissue-Engineered Model of Human Osteolytic Bone Tumor.

Ewing's sarcoma (ES) is a poorly differentiated pediatric tumor of aggressive behavior characterized by propensity to metastasize to bone. Interactions between the tumor and bone cells orchestrate a vicious cycle in which tumor cells induce osteoclast differentiation and activation to cause osteolytic lesions, broken bones, pain, and hypercalcemia. The lack of controllable models that can recapitulate osteolysis in ES impedes the development of new therapies and limits our understanding of how tumor cells invade bone. In response to this need, tissue-engineered models are now being developed t

[CT and MRI features of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor].

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: It's difficult to distinguish peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) from other small round cell tumors such as Ewing's sarcoma by histological examination. This study was to analyze the CT and MRI features of peripheral PNET. METHODS: The CT and MRI records of 7 patients with pathologically proved peripheral PNET were reviewed. RESULTS: The tumors were located in the left ala nasi, right lower jaw bone, left chest wall, right chest wall, left spermatic cord, paraspinal, and lumbar vertebral canal. The tumors in soft tissue showed resembled non-calcified, i

Solid alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the thorax in a child.

AIMS: This case illustrates the difficulties and pitfalls of diagnosis of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in its solid variant and in an unusual primary location, the mediastinum. CASE DETAILS: A 9-year-old boy presented with a primary thoracic tumour associated with metastasis in the left sacroiliac joint. Bronchial and mediastinal biopsies showed a malignant neoplasm with a solid sheet-like pattern of small round cells with a high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio associated with little or no fibrosis usually evocative of a peripheral neuroectodermal tumour (PNET) at this age. Immunohistochemical posi

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the median nerve. Case report with cytogenetic analysis.

The authors describe a malignant peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) that originated in the median nerve in an elderly adult. After the diagnosis was made by biopsy, the patient underwent radical local resection with interpositional vein grafting of the brachial artery. The tumor had the typical appearance of a primitive neural tumor with small, round cells forming rosettes. It stained positively for both the Ewing's sarcoma/peripheral PNET antigen (HBA-71) and neuron-specific enolase, confirming its neural origin. Ultrastructural examination revealed dense core granules and sugg

Surgical management of aggressive and malignant tumors of the proximal fibula.

En bloc resection of tumors of the proximal fibula by a specified route allows safe exposure of the popliteal vessels and resection of the fibula, tibiofibular joint, and adjacent musculature. Type I (marginal excision) and Type II (wide intracompartmental resection) procedures performed in ten consecutive patients were evaluated. There were five male and five female patients; the average age was 18.9 years. The histologic diagnoses were osteosarcoma (2 patients), Ewing's sarcoma (3 patients), aggressive osteoblastoma (1 patient), giant cell tumor (3 patients), and "active" osteochondroma (1 p

Does the Addition of a Vascularized Fibula Improve the Results of a Massive Bone Allograft Alone for Intercalary Femur Reconstruction of Malignant Bone Tumors in Children?

BACKGROUND: Massive bone allograft with or without a vascularized fibula is a potentially useful approach for femoral intercalary reconstruction after resection of bone sarcomas in children. However, inadequate data exist regarding whether it is preferable to use a massive bone allograft alone or a massive bone allograft combined with a vascularized free fibula for intercalary reconstructions of the femur after intercalary femur resections in children. Because the addition of a vascularized fibula adds to the time and complexity of the procedure, understanding more about whether it reduces com

A Case of Hyalinizing Clear-cell Carcinoma With EWSR1-ATF1 Fusion Gene Arising From the Minor Salivary Gland of the Tongue.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Hyalinizing clear-cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare malignant tumor of the minor salivary glands characterized by nests of clear cells within a hyalinized stroma. Its diagnosis remains challenging due to its histological similarity to other neoplasms, and the recent recognition of distinct molecular features, such as Ewing sarcoma breakpoint region 1 (EWSR1)-activating transcription factor 1 (ATF1) fusion. This report describes a rare case of HCCC arising from the tongue with confirmed EWSR1-ATF1 fusion. CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old man presented with a painless mass on the right

Comparative analysis of 5-year relative survival in adolescents and young adults with cancer relative to both children and adults in Europe (EUROCARE-6): Results from a population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: In Europe, cancer survival rates are high and improving for children (0-14 years) and AYAs (15-39 years). However, AYAs often have worse outcomes than children but better than adults. Using EUROCARE data, this study analyzes 5-year relative survival rates across age groups, highlighting age-specific differences and survival trends over time to address persistent disparities. METHODS: Data were collected from 95 European population-based cancer registries, covering 57 % of the European population. Analyses included malignant cancers diagnosed between 2006 and 2013. Recent advances in CAR-MSCs: the new engine of cellular immunotherapy evolution.

In recent years, the development of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) technology has greatly promoted the progress of cellular immunotherapy. Among them, CAR-T cell therapy has shown remarkable clinical effects in the treatment of hematological malignancies. However, this therapy still faces a series of challenges, including immunogenicity, toxic side effects, and insufficient maintenance of long-term efficacy. The latest research progress has extended CAR technology to mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and the resulting CAR-MSCs combine the precise targeting ability of CAR molecules with the inher

Epidemiology and Chemosensitivity of Primary Malignant Bone Tumors at a Teaching Hospital in South Africa: A 5-Year Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND Primary malignant bone tumors (PMBTs) are rare. The incidence of PMBTs varies by geographical location. In our African context, osteosarcoma is the most common PMBT seen; however, there is a variable representation of other PMBTs, likely due to some risk factor in the involved environment. PMBTs have not been studied concerning their geographical location and the role the environment can play as a risk factor. Our study aimed to retrospectively review children and adults treated for PMBTs at our center between 2016 and 2021. MATERIAL AND METHODS We performed a records review of pati

Nutritional status and clinical outcomes in pediatric patients with solid tumors : A systematic review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Nutritional status (NS), defined by undernutrition (body mass index [BMI] <5th percentile) or overnutrition (BMI  ≥ 85th percentile), is a poor prognostic indicator in pediatric oncology patients. The impact of NS has been primarily studied in hematologic malignancies. This review is intended to summarize literature reporting on the association of NS and treatment-related outcomes in pediatric solid tumors. METHODS: We searched four electronic databases from inception through August 2018 without language restriction, and included studies of children with cancers arising from ren
