The high prevalence of asymptomatic Toxocara infection among schoolchildren in Manado, Indonesia.

We performed a serological survey of Toxocara canis infection in junior high school students from three districts in northern Sulawesi. Almost all of the 117 subjects from two rural districts near Manado allowed dogs in their houses, and there was an 84.6% prevalence of T. canis infection in this group. Fifty-three subjects (45.3%) had serum samples with a high titer of specific anti-Toxocara antibody. By contrast, 41 students tested in one urban district showed a 12.2% prevalence. To confirm the clinical symptoms of visceral larva migrans (VML) and ocular larva migrans (OLM) caused by Toxocar

Paediatric traumatic brain injury in South Africa: some thoughts and considerations.

PURPOSE: This paper endeavours to describe the socio-political and economic backdrop to the assessment and management of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children in South Africa. OUTCOMES: The argument put forward is that huge disparities in socio-economic status, diverse socio-cultural influences, and widely differing educational systems and educational attainment which characterize the country's population, render the management of TBI different from approaches adopted in developed countries. The main causes of TBI can be attributed to the high rates of violence in the country, as well as a

[Bacteriological provision of anti-epidemic measures in the zones of a natural disaster in Southern Russia in 2002].

The bacteriological provision of the prophylactic and anti-epidemic measures, taken under the conditions of the unstable sanitary and epidemiological situation which arose as the result of the emergency situation due to the high flood in the Southern Federal District, was carried out by the efforts and means of microbiological laboratories forming a part of the territorial system of observation and laboratory control. On the whole, more than 20,000 samples of water supplied to the population for drinking and household use, more than 10,000 samples of foodstuffs and cooking raw materials were e

Evaluation of immunocontraception as a publicly acceptable form of vertebrate pest species control: the introduced grey squirrel in Britain as an example.

We sent out a targeted questionnaire to organizations and private individuals across the UK that have expressed an interest in squirrel management and conservation. Respondents were asked to evaluate shooting, trapping, poisoning and immunocontraception (IMC), according to their perceived efficacy, cost efficiency, and whether they were considered to be humane. The majority of both professionals and enthusiasts indicated support for grey squirrel control to help conserve red squirrels and to reduce economic damage to timber crops. Respondents\' comparative evaluations of current forms of contr

Triage for Leiurus quinquestriatus scorpion envenomation in children--is routine ICU hospitalization necessary?

(1) Leiurus quinquestriatus scorpion (LQS) envenomation is a common public health problem with a similar clinical presentation in the Middle East and worldwide: localized reactions occur in up to 97% of the victims. (2) LQS envenomation in children is potentially fatal since the severity of symptoms is weight-dependent. (3) A common policy is to hospitalize all children stung by the LQS-regardless of clinical severity-in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). (4) Seventeen of 18 children treated at two Israeli medical centers during an 8-year period developed mild to moderate clinical manif

Disease prevalence in women attending the STD clinic in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India.

Our objectives were to determine the prevalence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and its association with other STD causing organisms. Three hundred and thirty-six consecutive women (female sex workers (FSWs) and married contacts), attending a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic in Mumbai, were screened for N. gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis and Trichomonas vaginalis. Per speculum examination was performed and clinical signs were recorded. Symptoms perceived by the women were also recorded. The mean age for married contacts, FSWs and gonorrhoea-positive women was 27.9, 29.7 and 27.5, respecti

Neonatal diseases in llamas and alpacas.

This article attempts to cover the most common problems likely to present in neonatal crias and to give guidance on how to approach these cases, particularly how to stabilize the acute presentation of a sick neonate. It is impossible to cover every eventuality and it is important to keep an open mind when evaluating and treating sick neonatal camelids. Despite the often moribund presentation of sick neonatal crias, they may be highly rewarding to treat, although hospitalization and 24-hour care is recommended.

The Multifaceted Burden of Dog Bite Injuries: A Retrospective Study From an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical Unit.

BACKGROUND: Dog bite injuries (DBIs) are a common cause of facial trauma injuries requiring oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) input. They can present a dual burden of physical trauma and long-term psychological morbidity, yet these effects remain underrecognized and under-supported. PURPOSE: This study aims to quantify the OMS workload associated with DBI's and identify the physical and psychological outcomes experienced by victims of these injuries. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: Retrospective case series of dog-related injuries presenting to the OMS department from January 2020 to Febru

Fidelity in the context of adapting a digital intervention for depression from an evidence-based in-person format in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Digital interventions have emerged as a promising way to better meet growing population mental health needs. Our team developed a digital depression intervention (VMood; smartphone app) in Vietnam. VMood is adapted from an evidence-based in-person intervention (SSM) developed in Canada and uses cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) principles with remote coaching by non-specialist providers. Fidelity-adaptation is a major tension in implementation science. Fidelity is the degree an intervention is designed and delivered as intended. Conversely, adaptations are sometimes made for specif

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance among livestock farmers in Botswana.

INTRODUCTION: Improper antimicrobial use (AMU) in livestock production is a key driver of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Despite this, data on AMU among livestock farmers in low- and middle-income countries remains limited. The present study assessed knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding AMU and AMR amongst livestock farmers in Botswana. METHODS: A cross-sectional Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) survey was conducted among livestock farmers in southern Botswana, with participant recruitment facilitated by district veterinary service officers. Informed consent was obtai

Cultural practices, healthcare-seeking behaviors, and wildlife interface: Zoonotic disease risks among the Phu Thai Ethnic Group in Thailand.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Emerging infectious diseases, with 75% originating from zoonotic sources, highlight the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic underscored the importance of the One Health (OH) approach, especially in rural and ethnic communities where cultural practices and wildlife interactions may amplify zoonotic disease risks. This study determined the healthcare-seeking behaviors and wildlife interface of the Phu Thai ethnic group in Mukdahan Province, Thailand, to understand their cultural practices, zoonotic di

Ground-based adaptive horsemanship lessons for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder: a randomized controlled pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Equine-assisted services (EAS) has received attention as a potential treatment strategy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as existing literature indicates that symptoms may decrease following EAS. Relatively little is known about the mechanisms at play during lessons and if physiological measures are impacted. The objectives of this pilot study were to 1) explore the effects of adaptive horsemanship (AH) lessons on symptoms of PTSD, hormone concentrations, and social motor synchrony; 2) determine if physiological changes occur as veterans interact with horses; and 3) exp

Investigations into Increased Incidence of Severe Gizzard Erosions and Ulcerations in U.S. Commercial Broilers.

During a series of pathology surveys in four production complexes of a U.S. broiler integrator, the technical services veterinarians of an animal health company noted a high incidence of severe gizzard erosions and ulcerations (GEU), prompting further clinical investigation and a battery trial. No growth-promoting antibiotics or ionophore coccidiostats were used during the period of these surveys. All used tribasic copper chloride (TBCC) at ≤120 ppm added copper in broiler rations. Clostridium perfringens was isolated from 83% and 67% of gizzard lesions cultured in two complexes, and cecal C.

A Forty-Year Analysis of the Literature on Babesia Infection (1982-2022): A Systematic Bibliometric Approach.

Babesia infection is a tick-borne protozoan disease associated with significant veterinary, economic, and medical importance. This infection affects many hosts, ranging from wild to domestic animals and including man. All vertebrates serve as potential carriers due to the huge diversity of the species. Babesiosis has been associated with severe economic loss in livestock production, especially in cattle farming, and is also a major public health concern in man, which could be fatal. The infection is usually opportunistic, ranging from asymptomatic to symptomatic, usually in immunocompromised s

Antifungal Activity of Fibrate-Based Compounds and Substituted Pyrroles That Inhibit the Enzyme 3-Hydroxy-methyl-glutaryl-CoA Reductase of Candida glabrata (CgHMGR), Thus Decreasing Yeast Viability and Ergosterol Synthesis.

Due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains of yeasts belonging to the Candida genus, there is an urgent need to discover antifungal agents directed at alternative molecular targets. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the capacity of three different series of synthetic compounds to inhibit the Candida glabrata enzyme denominated 3-hydroxy-methyl-glutaryl-CoA reductase and thus affect ergosterol synthesis and yeast viability. Compounds 1c (α-asarone-related) and 5b (with a pyrrolic core) were selected as the best antifungal candidates among over 20 synthetic compounds studied.

An analysis of government-sponsored health insurance enrolment and claims data from Meghalaya: Insights into the provision of health care in North East India.

INTRODUCTION: The Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) was launched in 2013 in the North-East Indian state of Meghalaya to reduce household out-of-pocket expenditure on health and provide access to high-quality essential healthcare. Despite substantial expansion of the MHIS since the scheme's inception, there is a lack of comprehensive documentation and evaluation of the scheme's performance against its Universal Health Care (UHC) objectives. METHODS: We analysed six years of enrolment and claims data (2013-2018) covering three phases of the scheme to understand the pattern of enrolment, util

A point-of-care lateral flow assay for neutralising antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.

BACKGROUND: As vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 are now being rolled out, a better understanding of immunity to the virus, whether from infection, or passive or active immunisation, and the durability of this protection is required. This will benefit from the ability to measure antibody-based protection to SARS-CoV-2, ideally with rapid turnaround and without the need for laboratory-based testing. METHODS: We have developed a lateral flow POC test that can measure levels of RBD-ACE2 neutralising antibody (NAb) from whole blood, with a result that can be determined by eye or quantitatively on a sma

Incidence of Endemic Human Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in the United States.

IMPORTANCE: Leishmaniasis is recognized as an endemic human disease in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and South America. Yet despite case reports of endemic human leishmaniasis in the United States, and well-documented occurrences of disease in various animal vectors and reservoirs, the endemicity of leishmaniasis in North America has not yet been established. Moreover, leishmaniasis is not a federally reportable disease in the United States. Clinical awareness of endemic disease therefore remains low, with North American physicians considering leishmaniasis a tropical disease. OBJECTIVE: To
