The thermal and mechanical analgesic profile of buprenorphine at a dose rate of 1.5 micrograms/kg i.v. was investigated in five sheep. This dose produced significant analgesia for 40 min against the thermal stimulus, but no mechanical antinociception. A higher dose rate of 12 micrograms/kg also failed to produce antinociception to a mechanical stimulus. In addition, the effect of the drug (6 micrograms/kg) on respiratory gas tensions was determined and no significant changes were observed.

A local strain of goat pox virus was tested in goats and sheep. The results showed that 65% of goats and 20% of sheep reacted positively. Only goats died few days after the inoculation (55%) and no mortality was recorded in the sheep. The strict species specificity of this strain was not observed. The difference of sensitivity between sheep and goats was statistically significant.

We have investigated the effect of pinealectomy of the pregnant ewe on the 24-h pattern of fetal breathing activity during late gestation. Fetal breathing movements were recorded during 24-h periods on 18 occasions in 5 pinealectomized ewes and on 24 occasions in 6 pineal-intact ewes between 120 and 145 days gestation. All ewes were fed once daily between 1000 and 1300 h and were kept under a light-dark cycle 12:12 h. The life-cycle involves stray and sheep dogs as definitive hosts and sheep, pigs, goats and cattle as intermediate hosts. The disappearance of glycerol from plasma was studied after a single intravenous injection to estimate its volume of distribution (Vdist), plasma clearance rate, and rate constant for irreversible loss (kd). Studies were repeated before and after birth of the lamb to test whether loss of the placenta could account for rapidly increasing plasma concentrations in the newborn. Due to the already demonstrated specificity and usefulness of Listeria intracellular antigen in paraffin-embedded tissues for the direct diagnosis, we have used an indirect immunoperoxidase technique for the serological diagnosis of listeriosis in man, sheep and rabbit. This technique has been compared with other immunoperoxidase techniques (PAP) using the same antigen, and with other serlogical techniques--ELISA and microplate agglutination test--using two kinds of Listeria antigens, live formalinized and heat at 100 degrees C for one hour whole cells.

A sheep reared outdoors in Victoria was found to be heavily infested with a stored product mite, Sancassania berlesei (Acaridae), apparently subsequent to an earlier flystrike.
