Effects of shoulder distraction on canine shoulder arthroscopy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of the Leipzig distractor during canine shoulder arthroscopy. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental, ex vivo. SAMPLE POPULATION: Paired shoulder joints from 15 large breed canine cadavers. METHODS: Standard lateral shoulder arthroscopy was performed with or without the use of the Leipzig distractor (n = 15 each). Joint space width, procedure time, and visibility and palpability of the intra-articular structures were assessed during the arthroscopy. After the arthroscopic evaluation, each shoulder joint was disarticulated to assess the area and number of iatrogenic articu

Obstetric maneuvers for shoulder dystocia and associated fetal morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the fetal injury rate associated with shoulder dystocia and to determine whether there is a higher rate of brachial plexus injury or bone fracture when fetal manipulation techniques are required for delivery. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of 285 cases of shoulder dystocia that occurred between January 1991 and December 1995 was performed. The type, sequence, and combination of obstetric maneuvers used to relieve the shoulder dystocia were noted. These cases were divided into two groups, as follows: (1) those resolved with McRoberts' maneuver, suprapubi

Effectiveness of combined surgical and exercise-based interventions following primary traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness, risk of recurrence and return to activity (RTA) of surgery combined with exercise-based interventions (EBI) versus EBI alone after traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation (ASD). DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES: Systematic literature search (MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar). ELIGIBILITY: Studies focused on EBI or EBI as a part of postoperative care for adults with an ASD, written in English, and published after 1990. We excluded diagnostic, assessment-based studies on individuals experiencing recurrent sho

Chronic Adaptations of Shoulder Muscle Synergies in Healthy Baseball Players.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has demonstrated that muscle synergy structure can adapt owing to training and injury; however, muscle synergies have not been evaluated in baseball players. HYPOTHESIS: The throwing arm would have a similar muscle synergy structure but different levels of individual muscle activity within each synergy, relative to the nonthrowing arm. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study in a controlled laboratory setting. METHODS: Fourteen healthy competitive baseball players were included. Participants were tested bilaterally during a center-out planar reaching task using the

Prevalence of Rotator Cuff Tears Among Older Tennis Players and Its Impact on Clinical Findings and Shoulder Function.

CONTEXT: Tennis is a noncontact sport playable at an individual's own pace. Thus, it is popular among the older adults. It is known that older adults often suffer from rotator cuff tears (RCTs), which may affect tennis activity. However, the prevalence and influence of RCTs on tennis play among older players are not well-known. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of RCTs in older tennis players and its impact on physical findings and shoulder function. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: Fifty-three tennis players (mean age: 70.7 y; range: 60-83 y) participating in a recreation

Non-contrast MR imaging of the glenohumeral joint. Part II. Glenohumeral instability and labrum tears.

MR imaging of the shoulder without contrast is frequently used for evaluation of glenohumeral instability in spite of the popularity of MR arthrography. With proper imaging technique, familiarity with normal anatomy and variants as well as knowledge of the expected pathologic findings high diagnostic accuracy may be achieved.

[Arthroscopy and arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder joint].

Shoulder arthroscopy is a valuable procedure in unclear shoulder pain and the differential diagnosis between instability and impingement. With arthroscopic subacromial decompression comparable results to open operations can be achieved whereas in stabilizing procedures of the shoulder joint, open surgery is still superior to arthroscopic operations.

Estimates of Golf-Related Upper Extremity Injuries in the United States: A 10-Year Epidemiology Study (2011-2020).

BACKGROUND: Golf is one of the most popular sports in the United States (US) and is played by participants of all ages and skill level. Given the popularity and sport-specific demands on the upper torso, golf poses a considerable risk for upper extremity (UE) injuries. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to (1) determine the incidence rate of UE golf injuries presenting to emergency departments (EDs) in the US, (2) determine the most commonly injured body parts and mechanisms of injury, and (3) compare current injury epidemiology with previous trends in the literature. HYPOTHESIS: Mal

Correlation of Shoulder and Elbow Kinetics With Ball Velocity in Collegiate Baseball Pitchers.

CONTEXT: Throwing a baseball is a dynamic and violent act that places large magnitudes of stress on the shoulder and elbow. Specific injuries at the elbow and glenohumeral joints have been linked to several kinetic variables throughout the throwing motion. However, very little research has directly examined the relationship between these kinetic variables and ball velocity. OBJECTIVE: To examine the correlation of peak ball velocity with elbow-valgus torque, shoulder external-rotation torque, and shoulder-distraction force in a group of collegiate baseball pitchers. DESIGN: Cross-sectional s

Pectoralis major tendon transfer for recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation after primary surgery in an elderly patient: A case report.

RATIONALE: Adequate stability of traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation without any obvious damage to the anterior capsulolabral structure in elderly patients can be achieved by treating the associated rotator cuff injuries. However, in case of recurrent shoulder dislocation despite rotator cuff repair, the repaired rotator cuff may be weakened or reruptured and is often impossible to repair again. Therefore, the role of the rotator cuff as a shoulder stabilizer cannot be expected. Even if the anterior joint capsule is left, it is too weak to imbrication either. An additional anterior structu

Epidemiology, Treatment, and Prevention of Lumbar Spine Injuries in Major League Baseball Players.

In recent years, increased attention has been paid to injuries occurring in Major League Baseball (MLB) players. Although most of the current orthopedic literature regarding baseball injuries pertains to the shoulder and elbow, lumbar spine injuries are another common reason for time out of play. Back and core injuries may represent as many as 12% of all injuries that result in time out of play from MLB. This high rate of injury is likely related to the critical role that the spine plays in every major baseball-related movement. Linking the upper extremities to the hips and lower extremities,

BACKGROUND: Linking firefighter injury reporting to general motion patterns may provide insight into potential injury mechanisms and the dev … juries sustained; back injuries occurred primarily while lifting, knee injuries while stepping, and shoulder injuries during pushing/pulling-related activities. CONCLUSIONS: Firefighter injuries are not just a fireground problem. Injury causation may be better understood by linking the injury location and type with motion patterns rather than job duties. Injuries in Japanese university handball: a study among 1017 players.

The aim of this study was to examine the injury profile of Japanese university handball players. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 1017 participants who played in the 2018 Japanese National University Handball Championship were followed. The incidence within the previous year was 0.59 [95% CI, confidence interval: 0.56-0.62] per player per year. The ankle (33.3%), knee (23.6%), and shoulder/clavicle (12.6%) were the body regions most affected by traumatic mechanisms, while the lumbar spine/lower back (26.0%), knee (15.7%), and shoulder (15.0%) were the body regions most affected by ove

Fracture of the Humeral Shaft Associated to Elbow Dislocation and Fracture of the Distal-third of the Forearm: Case Report.

Humeral shaft fractures combined with elbow dislocation and fracture of the distal third of the bones of the forearm are uncommon. No description of this simultaneous association has been found in the same patient. Some studies report the association of these two lesions; however, no reports on the three ipsilateral lesions have been found at the PubMed, Lilacs and Bireme databases. The present report describes a case that occurred in a 13-year-old boy who suffered a fall from a height of approximately three meters and was admitted to a trauma hospital. Radiographs showed an ipsilateral humera

Reduction strategies through the anterolateral exposure for fixation of type B and C pilon fractures.

The surgical management of pilon fractures has evolved over the last several years with treatment shifting from acute definitive fixation to delayed fixation. One of the driving forces behind this change was the high incidence of soft tissue complications in those patients with high-energy pilon fractures (Orthopaedic Trauma Association 43B and 43C) managed with acute stabilization. Meticulous soft tissue handling along with delayed definitive fixation based on the soft tissue envelope has decreased the short-term complications associated with treatment of these injuries. Anterolateral exposur

Acromioclavicular joint sprains: the post-injury recovery interval.

Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) sprains occur after injuries to the shoulder girdle. Current practice is to treat such injuries conservatively. This study determines the recovery interval of ACJ sprains treated conservatively. Forty-seven patients with grades I or II ACJ sprains were evaluated in a shoulder clinic and treated conservatively. The average age was 37 years, with the injury being caused by a fall, contact sport or road-traffic accident. At an interval of 12 months or greater these patients were assessed by means of a questionnaire. Six months post-injury, pain was described as signi
