PATCH: posture and mobility training for care staff versus usual care in care homes: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Residents of care homes have high levels of disability and poor mobility, but the promotion of health and wellbeing within care homes is poorly realised. Residents spend the majority of their time sedentary which leads to increased dependency and, coupled with poor postural management, can have many adverse outcomes including pressure sores, pain and reduced social interaction. The intervention being tested in this project (the Skilful Care Training Package) aims to increase the awareness and skills of care staff in relation to poor posture in the older, less mobile adult and highl

Barriers and facilitators of COVID-19 vaccination among drug users: a qualitative analysis for future crisis management.

INTRODUCTION: People Who Use Drugs (PWUD), are a population at the high risk of exposure to infectious disease and should be considered as a priority for vaccination against communicable diseases. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic this population showed resistance to vaccination. The aim of this study was to better understand the barriers and facilitators of COVID-19 vaccination in PWUD in Tehran, Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this qualitative study data were collected through semi-structured interviews with participants through purposeful sampling with maximum variation. The collected

Optimization of a new adaptive intervention using the SMART Design to increase COVID-19 testing among people at high risk in an urban community.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has impacted the health and social fabric of individuals and families living across the USA, and it has disproportionately affected people living in urban communities with co-morbidities, those working in high-risk settings, refusing or unable to adhere to CDC guidelines, and more. Social determinants of health (SDH), such as stigmatization, incarceration, and poverty, have been associated with increased exposure to COVID-19 and increased deaths. While vaccines and booster shots are available, it will take time to reach herd immunity, and it is unclear how long newly devel

Relationship of psoriasis severity to obesity using same-gender siblings as controls for obesity.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a multifactorial disease affected by both genetic and environmental factors. Several comorbid conditions, such as smoking, depression and obesity have been found to be associated with psoriasis. This study addressed the association of psoriasis and obesity using same-gender full siblings as controls, correlating between body mass index (BMI) and severity of psoriasis as determined by body surface area (BSA) and the Physician's Global Assessment (PGA). METHODS: In total, 88 patients undergoing outpatient treatment for psoriasis were surveyed for demographic information

Preterm birth among pregnant women living in areas with high social vulnerability.

BACKGROUND: Communities and individuals widely vary in their resources and ability to respond to external stressors and insults. To identify vulnerable communities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed the Social Vulnerability Index, an integrated tool to assess community resources and preparedness; it is based on 15 factors and includes individual scores in the following 4 themes: socioeconomic status (theme 1), household composition and disability (theme 2), minority status and language (theme 3), and housing type and transportation (theme 4) and an overall composite scor

Solution-Focused Brief Intervention for Substance Use: Protocol for a Multisite Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is a high-impact biopsychosocial problem in Chile, where 21% of adults have experienced a severe alcohol use episode. In the past year, the prevalence rates were 12.5% for marijuana, 0.8% for cocaine, and 0.4% for cocaine base paste. Cannabis prevalence in Chile is higher than the global (4.2%) and South American (3.58%) averages. Cocaine prevalence in Chile is lower than in South America (1.62%) but higher than the global average (0.42%). No international reports are available for cocaine base paste. Mental health and substance use programs in Chilean primary care in

Mental health needs of patients with osteoarthritis based on a preference perspective: a mixed-methods study.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the characteristics and influencing factors of mental health needs in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) from a preference-based perspective, and to inform the development of tailored service strategies based on their needs and preferences. METHOD: From March to June 2024, 385 patients with OA were recruited from three tertiary hospitals in Changzhou using convenience sampling. Quantitative data were collected using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and a self-developed Mental Health Needs and Preferences Questionnaire, and analyzed using multiple linear re

Nationwide Lockdown, Population Density, and Financial Distress Brings Inadequacy to Manage COVID-19: Leading the Services Sector into the Trajectory of Global Depression.

The service industry provides distributive services, producer services, personal services, and social services. These services largely breakdowns due to restrictions on border movements, confined travel and transportation services, a decline in international tourists' visitation, nationwide lockdowns, and maintaining social distancing in the population. Although these measures are highly needed to contain coronavirus, it decreases economic and financial activities in a country, which requires smart solutions to globally subsidize the services sector. The study used different COVID-19 measures,

Effects of Social Media Narratives on Affective and Behavioral Responses to Menopause Content: Randomized Online Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Social media is an increasingly prominent channel for communicating menopause information and experiences, yet the affective and behavioral consequences of different narrative framings remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: We examined how distress, normalizing, and transformative narratives influenced women's immediate responses to menopause content online, drawing on established narrative framings of menopause as normality, distress, and transformation. METHODS: In an online experiment, UK women aged 40 to 83 years who were perimenopausal or postmenopausal were recruited via Prolific, a wi

Parent-training programmes for improving maternal psychosocial health.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems are common, and there is evidence from a range of studies to suggest that a number of factors relating to maternal psychosocial health can have a significant effect on the mother-infant relationship, and that this can have consequences for both the short and long-term psychological health of the child. The use of parenting programmes is increasing in the UK and evidence of their effectiveness in improving outcomes for mothers is now required. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review is to address whether group-based parenting programmes are effective in impr

The ECHO study: compassion-focused therapy for young voice hearers and their caregivers. A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Voice hearing can occur in healthy people without a trigger, be caused by a traumatic event, or occur as part of a psychiatric disorder. There are still many gaps in our understanding of voice hearing, and research in this field can be challenging, maybe because it is associated with shame and stigma. Those who experience distress by voice hearing could benefit from a treatment, aimed directly at that. The ECHO manualized treatment is based on the principles of compassion-focused therapy (CFT). METHODS: Treatment will take place on several different psychiatric hospitals in the Re

"Are they going to recollect who they need to contact?": understanding sexually transmitted infection transmission risks among older Canadians who winter in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections are on the rise in older populations globally, including among older travellers. International retirement migrants are older people who have retired from the workforce and travel abroad seasonally, typically during the winter months in their home countries. The transnational nature of this practice may challenge public health efforts to control the spread of sexually transmitted infection and encourage treatment. This study focuses on Yuma, Arizona, a popular destination for Canadian international retirement migrants who winter in the United States,

A Phenomenological Study of Nursing Home Residents' Experience During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons Learned.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted widespread fear and distress on older populations globally. As highlighted by the World Health Organization, those residing in nursing homes are especially at risk due to the communal living arrangements and the high prevalence of chronic health conditions among residents. Because of the increased vulnerability of nursing home residents, harsher restrictive measures, such as social isolation, were implemented as part of infection control strategies, with a particular emphasis on reducing mortality rates and limiting the spread of disease. As a re

Community-based strategies for tuberculosis control in migrant communities: how to integrate determinants of vulnerability into decision-making.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge, particularly among migrant populations, who face increased vulnerability due to social and structural determinants of health. In Catalonia, Spain, the Model of Community and Public Action (MACIP) programme was launched in 2023 to improve TB prevention and care through culturally adapted, community-based interventions delivered by community health workers (CHWs). This study aims to describe the vulnerability determinants among migrants diagnosed with TB and enrolled in the MACIP programme, and to present the community-based

Overdose prevention activities led by local public health departments, 2019-2023.

BACKGROUND: Drug overdose deaths in the United States increased to historic levels in recent years, with provisional estimates indicating more than 111,000 deaths in the 12 months ending July 2023. In 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Division of Overdose Prevention in collaboration with the National Association of City and County Health Officials, funded local health departments (LHDs) to work on overdose prevention activities. This paper aims to: 1) describe the overdose prevention activities that LHDs implemented during the four eighteen-month funding cycles; 2) identif

Exploring the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on nurse managers.

BACKGROUND: Research shows that front-line nurses' workload and stress levels increased during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, however, there is little research of these factors in relation to nurse managers. Previous research undertaken in Austria found that some nurse managers working in nursing homes undertook clinical as well as managerial functions during the pandemic, a double burden that could have increased their stress levels and have had adverse psychological, physical and social consequences. AIM: To investigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on nurse manage

From disease- to people-centred pandemic management: organized communities, community-oriented primary care and health information systems.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the health equity gap between and within countries. Western countries were the first to receive vaccines and mortality was higher among socially deprived, minority and indigenous populations. Surprisingly, many sub-Saharan countries reported low excess mortalities. These countries share experiences with community organization and participation in health. The aim of this article was to analyse if and how this central role of people can promote a successful pandemic response. METHODS: This analysis was partly based on local and national experiences shar

Geometric reformatting of shared relational maps during flexible decisions.

Adaptive behavior requires balancing generalization from past experience with the flexible selection of goal-relevant information. Cognitive maps provide a structured basis for this balance, yet how a stable relational map supports task-appropriate decision coordinates remains unclear. Combining fMRI with CNN-LSTM modeling, we show that a shared two-dimensional social map coexists with localized, goal-dependent geometric reformatting. A hippocampal-orbitofrontal/medial prefrontal network preserves a reusable 2D relational structure, whereas a frontoparietal control network expresses goal-align

From defense to reconstruction: The hostility-meaning dual-path model of how observing others' adversity influences distress disclosure.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the mechanism by which observing peers' adverse experiences influences distress disclosure of negative information through two progressive studies. METHODS: Study 1constructed a moderated mediation model to analyze the relationships among stress, self-esteem, hostility, and disclosure. Study 2 employed a situational experiment to test a chain mediation model which supplemented by multi-group analysis. RESULTS: Study 1 showed that stress directly inhibited disclosure and indirectly inhibited it via reduced self-esteem, with hostility moderating the stress-self-e
