The Influence of Religious Commitment on Social Cognition: An Exploratory Study of Social Representations of Peace Among a Sample of Graduates Cameroonians.

The preservation of peace is a key concern of the Cameroonian people and the subject of debate within the political class. The public's marked interest in this issue prompted us to look at social representations of peace in Cameroon through the prism of religious commitment. Adopting a structural approach to social representations, we conducted a study among respondents with different levels of religious commitment (N = 156). Data collected via free association and characterization questionnaires were submitted to hierarchical and Q-sort analyses. Results indicated that unity is the factor tha

Primed for death: Law enforcement-citizen homicides, social media, and retaliatory violence.

We examine whether retaliatory violence exists between law enforcement and citizens while controlling for any social media contagion effect related to prior fatal encounters. Analyzed using a trivariate dynamic structural vector-autoregressive model, daily time-series data over a 21-month period captured the frequencies of police killed in the line of duty, police deadly use of force incidents, and social media coverage. The results support a significant retaliatory violence effect against minorities by police, yet there is no evidence of retaliatory violence against law enforcement officers b

Opinion formation model for markets with a social temperature and fear.

In the spirit of behavioral finance, we study the process of opinion formation among investors using a variant of the two-dimensional voter model with a tunable social temperature. Further, a feedback acting on the temperature is introduced, such that social temperature reacts to market imbalances and thus becomes time dependent. In this toy market model, social temperature represents nervousness of agents toward market imbalances representing speculative risk. We use the knowledge about the discontinuous generalized voter model phase transition to determine critical fixed points. The system e

Making sense of unfamiliar risks in the countryside: the case of Lyme disease.

The focus of this paper is on how popular representations of the countryside provide countryside users with a discursive framework to make sense of unfamiliar countryside-based risks, taking Lyme disease as an example. Sixty-six semi-structured interviews were conducted with 82 visitors in Richmond Park, New Forest, and Exmoor National Park in the UK. The data were analysed using thematic analysis and was informed by social representations theory. The analysis indicated that a lay understanding of the risk of Lyme disease was filtered by place-attachment and the social representations of the c

Living alone: elderly Chinese Singaporeans.

Asian societies maintain the norm that older people should live with their children. Yet some older people live alone. This is the first study to explore social isolation, strategies of coping, and preferences about living arrangements among Chinese Singaporeans aged 65+ who live alone. Data from 19 semi-structured interviews were analyzed. The elderly people who live alone either have no other alternative, or they choose it despite opportunities to live with others. Regardless of the initial reason, solo-dwellers in Singapore succeed at living alone by developing behavioral and psychological

Inequalities in access to food in Brazil: a scoping review with a racial and gender focus and policy recommendations.

Vulnerable populations, such as women and Black individuals, face greater physical and economic challenges in accessing food, revealing that food environments are structured as a reflection of the country's social inequalities. In this context, this study aimed to conduct a scoping review in order to identify studies on food access, acquisition, and availability in Brazil, with a specific focus on gender and race/skin color. The study also aimed to identify recommendations for policymakers in designing public policies to improve food access in Brazil, while considering the existing inequalitie

Managing transitions: a qualitative study of undergraduate international nursing students' experience of a mentoring program.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: International nursing students (INS) enhance the diversity of the professional nursing workforce and offer universities substantial cultural, academic, economic, and social advantages. However, INS frequently face challenges in their educational experiences, particularly when targeted support is lacking. Guided by Bridges’ Transition Framework, this study examines the roles of a mentoring program on the academic, social, and personal development of undergraduate INS. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with seven participants (four mentors and three mentees)

Understanding happiness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender populations through a data-driven path analysis in a Chinese sample: A three capitals model.

Studies on Happiness in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other sexual and gender diverse (SGD) populations are limited and have, in a majority of cases, been studied in Western populations. Prior popular frameworks to explain well-being in SGD populations include minority stress and Bourdieu's forms of capital, though few have integrated these frameworks. We leverage structural equation models, integrating these constructs to examine the relative influence of forms of capital and stigma on happiness among a large sample of culturally and linguistically Chinese SGD populations. The pres

Invisibility, hypervisibility, relational visibility, and collective adaptation: inuit experiences of disability.

Disability is increasingly understood as a socially and culturally situated experience shaped by relationships, environments, and systems of recognition. However, limited research has examined how disability is perceived and experienced within Inuit communities. This paper draws on a secondary qualitative analysis of interviews with 126 Nunavummiut across 12 communities in Nunavut, conducted as part of a community-led study by Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuaqtiit Society. Guided by Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and the Piliriqatigiinniq Research Model, the analysis explores how disability becomes

"A safe place to use": People who use drugs' perceptions and preferences prior to the implementation of Rhode Island's first overdose prevention center.

INTRODUCTION: In July 2021, Rhode Island became the first state in the United States (US) to legalize overdose prevention centers (OPCs). To inform the design and implementation of an OPC in Providence, Rhode Island's capital, we explored perceptions of OPCs and programmatic needs among people who use drugs. METHODS: The study conducted in-depth qualitative interviews from December 2023 to March 2024 with 25 people who use drugs. Thematic analysis explored OPC implementation considerations, with a focus on perceived social and structural barriers and facilitators for use. The study shared fin

Recommendations for collecting and analysing migration-related determinants in public health research.

BACKGROUND: According to the definition of the German Federal Statistical Office, about every fourth person living in Germany has a so-called migration background (MB), i.e., the person or at least one of their parents was born without German citizenship. However, MB has been defined differently in many studies. Also, the MB summarises people in different living situations, making differentiated analysis in health science more difficult. This article formulates recommendations for the collection and analysis of migration-related, as well as social and structural, determinants of health. INDIC

The Role of Volunteers in Supporting the Psychosocial Well-Being of Hospitalised Children with Cancer: A Narrative Review and Recommendations for Clinical Practice.

Children undergoing cancer treatment face repeated, prolonged hospitalisations carrying substantial risks of psychological distress, social isolation, and impaired development. Volunteers offering structured non-medical activities are widely employed to complement professional psychosocial care in paediatric oncology settings, yet empirical evidence examining their role specifically-as distinct from professionally delivered psychosocial interventions-remains sparse. This narrative review, conducted in accordance with SANRA criteria and drawing on a structured search of PubMed, PsycINFO, and Go

Host factors are associated with vaginal microbiome structure in pregnancy in the ECHO Cohort Consortium.

Using pooled vaginal microbiota data from pregnancy cohorts (N = 683 participants) in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program, we analyzed 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequences to identify clinical and demographic host factors that associate with vaginal microbiota structure in pregnancy both within and across diverse cohorts. Using PERMANOVA models, we assessed factors associated with vaginal community structure in pregnancy, examined whether host factors were conserved across populations, and tested the independent and combined effects of host factors on vaginal commu

Psychometric assessment of the Polish Translation of the Transgender Positive Identity Measure (T-PIM).

OBJECTIVES: Research conducted in transgender and gender diverse individuals focused mainly on the challenges and health disparities affecting this population. One reason for this situation is the lack of questionnaires capturing positive aspects and experiences related to being a transgender person. The Transgender Positive Identity Measure (T-PIM) is one of a very few measures designed to explore such experiences. The aim of the study was to investigate the structure, reliability and validity of the Polish translation of the T-PIM questionnaire. METHODS: A group of 89 transgender and gender

Rapid duplexed detection of illicit drugs in wastewater using gold nanoparticle conjugated aptamer sensors.

The abuse of illicit drug addiction is a worldwide public health and social problem. In this paper, we reported on a simple and rapid colorimetric biosensor for duplexed detection of methamphetamine (METH) and cocaine in a single assay. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and Au@Ag NPs were synthesized and functionalized with DNA reporter probes (RPs) for METH and cocaine, respectively. The magnetic beads (MBs) were conjugated with two capture probes (CPs) respective to METH and cocaine. The respective RPs and CPs were designed to hybridize with each illicit drug-binding DNA aptamers through DNA-DNA hy

Developing an incident management system to support Ebola response -- Liberia, July-August 2014.

The ongoing Ebola virus disease (Ebola) outbreak in West Africa is the largest and most sustained Ebola epidemic recorded, with 6,574 cases. Among the five affected countries of West Africa (Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Nigeria, and Senegal), Liberia has had the highest number cases (3,458). This epidemic has severely strained the public health and health care infrastructure of Liberia, has resulted in restrictions in civil liberties, and has disrupted international travel. As part of the initial response, the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW) developed a national task f
