Acceptable Chin-Brow Vertical Angle for Neutral Position Radiography: Preliminary Analyses Based on Parameters of the Whole Sagittal Spine of an Asymptomatic Chinese Population.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to acquire the whole sagittal spine parameters and investigated the acceptable chin-brow vertical angle (CBVA) for neutral position radiography in an asymptomatic Chinese population. METHODS: The parameters measured in 257 asymptomatic volunteers included CBVA, occipital slope, orbital tilt, occipital incidence, C0-C2 Cobb angle, C2-C7 Cobb angle, C1-C7 Cobb angle, C2-C7 sagittal vertical axis and absolute rotation angle, cervical tilt, cranial tilt, T1 slope, and thoracic kyphosis, and others. We used Pearson correlation analyses to find relationships between CBVA and ot

Testing biomechanical models of human lumbar lordosis variability.

OBJECTIVES: Lumbar lordosis (LL) is a key adaptation for bipedalism, but factors underlying curvature variations remain unclear. This study tests three biomechanical models to explain LL variability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty adults (15 male, 15 female) were scanned using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a standing posture analysis was conducted, and lumbar range of motion (ROM) was assessed. Three measures of LL were compared. The trunk's center of mass was estimated from external markers to calculate hip moments (Mhip ) and lumbar flexion moments. Cross-sectional areas of lumbar verteb

A Change in Lumbar Sagittal Alignment After Single-level Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion for Lumbar Degenerative Spondylolisthesis With Normal Sagittal Balance.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis. OBJECTIVE: The object is to assess the correlation between whole lumbar lordosis (LL) and the segmental angle (SA) after single-level anterior lumbar interbody fusion for degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The restoration of the SA at lower lumbar spine is meaningful, considering it contributes approximately 60% of LL, and revision surgery due to flat back or adjacent segment pathology was necessary decades after the initial surgery. However, little is known about the change of whole lumbar curvature after single-level low

Difference in selective muscle activity of thoracic erector spinae during prone trunk extension exercise in subjects with slouched thoracic posture.

BACKGROUND: The prone trunk extension (PTE) exercise is often used to strengthen the back extensors. Although altered trunk posture is associated with movement impairment, the influences of a slouched thoracic posture on muscle activity of the thoracic erector spinae and thoracic movement during the PTE exercise were overlooked in previous studies. OBJECTIVES: To compare the muscle activity of the erector spinae muscles and the relative ratio of the thoracic and lumbar erector spinae muscles during a PTE exercise in subjects with and without slouched thoracic posture. DESIGN: Cross-sectional

Anterior neurodecompression of kyphotic spondylogenic myelopathy Ranawat grade III and posterior decompression of lordotic spine improve walking ability.

Cervical spondylosis is common condition rarely associated with radiculomyelopathy which surgical treatment, according to meta-analysis, is not better than nonsurgical. Our hypothesis was that neurodecompression which type is chosen according to spinal alignment should result in better functional improvement comparing with nonsurgical treatment. Between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 2007 a total of 77 patients with spondylogenic myelopathy were selected for the study. The inclusion criteria were symptoms and signs of myelopathy Ranawat grade III. Exclusion criteria were amyotrophic lateral

[Comparison on neurotoxicity and immunotoxicity between 6PPD and 6PPD-Q in zebrafish under equimolar exposure conditions].

N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) and its derivative N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-benzoquinone (6PPD-Q) have been widely detected in the environment and pose potential threats to ecosystems and human health. Given that 6PPD can be equimolarly converted to 6PPD-Q in the environment and organisms, the toxicity differences and molecular mechanisms of action between the two under equimolar exposure remain unclear. This study systematically compared the neurotoxicity and immunotoxicity of the two substances under equimolar conditions. The results from the zebrafish mode

Anti-directional segmental motion during flexion and extension in the adolescent thoracolumbar spine: a normative study of 166 participants.

PURPOSE: Anti-directional segmental motion has been documented in the cervical spine but never quantified in the thoracolumbar region. We aimed to determine its prevalence and determinants in adolescents and test its independence from coronal deviation. METHODS: Idiag M360 data from 166 adolescents (103 males, 63 females; 14.4 ± 0.9 years) were retrospectively analysed. Segmental angles (Th1/2–L5/S1) in upright, flexion and extension were recorded. Anti-directional motion was defined as segmental movement opposite to the intended trunk direction. Bonferroni-corrected correlations, kyphosis ter

Side-Shift Therapy as Translation-Dominant 3D Auto-Correction in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Clinical-Mathematical Framework for Stratified PSSE.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional deformity characterised by coronal curvature, axial rotation, and altered trunk translation. Radiographic indices (e.g., Cobb angle) quantify structure but incompletely represent functional correctability, a core target of physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSE). Side-Shift Therapy (SST), originating from the RNOH tradition (Mehta, 1985) and operationalised via a mobility classification (Betts et al., 2014), is a voluntary lateral translation of the trunk relative to the pelvis (not a side-bend). This paper presents a b

Geometric feature analysis for identifying and characterizing normal variations on chest radiographs.

PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate a quantitative method using geometric features of anatomical shadows on chest X-rays (CXRs) to identify normal variant cases and to elucidate the factors characterizing these variations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 548 normal CXRs confirmed by CT within one month. Shadows of six key anatomical structures (trachea, aorta, right atrium, left ventricle, right/left diaphragm domes) were manually labeled. Geometric features—center of gravity (x, y), length (l), and count (c)—were calculated for each label after image standardization. Cases with featur

Biomechanical rational for development of cervical kyphosis deformity: a finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Alterations in cervical curvature can redistribute stress and strain among intervertebral discs (IVDs), facet joints, and neck muscles, potentially initiating degenerative changes that contribute to the development of cervical kyphosis. This study aims to investigate the biomechanical effects of cervical kyphotic deformity, with a particular focus on the stress and strain variations in facet joints and IVDs, to elucidate the underlying mechanical mechanisms of cervical kyphosis. METHODS: A finite element (FE) model of the lordotic cervical C2-C7 motion segment was constructed based

Risk factors associated with rapid progression of scoliosis following intraspinal lesion resection in laminoplasty patients.

Scoliosis is a rare complication of intraspinal lesions. However, in patients with pre-existing scoliosis who have undergone lesion resection via laminoplasty, the subsequent progression of this deformity and its associated risk factors remain poorly understood. The objective of this study is to investigate the incidence of progressive scoliosis and identify risk factors contributing to its rapid progression in patients who underwent laminoplasty for resection of intraspinal lesions. This study retrospectively analyzed data from patients who underwent laminoplasty for resection of intraspinal

Different kinematic strategies are adopted by AIS patients during walking depending on their Lenke type.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is classically evaluated through static X-rays and health-related quality of life questionnaires that do not reflect the functional limitations of patients during daily life activities, such as walking. The aim was to investigate kinematic strategies in non-operated AIS with different types of curvature during walking using 3D gait analysis. METHODS: 13 AIS with Lenke 5 (major Cobb: 23 ± 8°), 30 AIS with Lenke 1 (major Cobb: 40 ± 14°) in addition to 24 controls underwent biplanar X-rays followed by 3D gait analysis. The kinematic parameters

Anterior Controllable Antedisplacement Fusion (ACAF) in Revision Surgery for Iatrogenic Cervical Kyphosis: Technical Note and Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic cervical kyphosis (ICK) often requires complex anterior and posterior correction, which is associated with multiple complications. Consequently, there is a need to investigate alternative treatment approaches that streamline the operative process and markedly diminish postoperative complications. This study, therefore, aimed to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of a single-stage anterior controllable antedisplacement fusion (ACAF) in revision surgeries for ICK. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on three ICK cases treated with the ACAF technique in our de

Association between genetic polymorphisms and risk of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in case-control studies: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a structural lateral spinal curvature of ≥10° with rotation. Approximately 2%-3% of children across populations are affected with AIS, and this condition is responsible for ~$3 billion in costs within the USA. Although AIS is believed to have a strong genetic contribution, clinical translation of identified genetic variants has stalled. METHODS: The databases MEDLINE (via PubMed), Embase, Google Scholar and Ovid MEDLINE were searched and limited to articles in English. Title and abstract, full-text and data extraction screening was conducte
