Common Elements and Differences Among Treatment Approaches to Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Commentary on Five Case Studies.

Treating people who have experienced deep and prolonged developmental trauma, that is, complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD), can be challenging given the complexity and severity of their presentations. The main features of complex post-traumatic stress disorder, that is, affective and behavioral dysregulation, altered self-experience and identity disturbances, relational difficulties, negative self-concepts, and negative pathogenic beliefs, are, at the same time, therapeutic goals and obstacles to treatment. Therefore, clinicians must be aware of these difficulties in order to identi

Trajectories of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and subsequent risk of long COVID in the World Trade Center Health Registry.

OBJECTIVE: Though the etiology of long COVID is not well-understood, pre-existing mental health conditions have been identified as risk factors. We examined associations between post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms (PTSS) and long COVID among individuals exposed to the World Trade Center disaster. METHODS: We used group-based trajectory modeling to identify five PTSS trajectories (resilient, low-stable, remitted, delayed onset, chronic-high) among enrollees in the World Trade Center Health Registry (2003-04 to 2020-2021). Among 5361 enrollees who reported a COVID-19 infection, we used modi

Differential Effects of Hazardous Drinking on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Outcomes Across Two Prolonged Exposure Treatment Formats.

Individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are at increased risk for hazardous drinking, which often complicates treatment and affects trauma-focused psychotherapy outcomes. The present study is an exploratory, secondary analysis investigating differential effects of prolonged exposure (PE) among those with and without hazardous drinking and whether treatment outcomes varied across these groups as a function of PE format. Data used were from a randomized controlled trial that examined two daily, compressed formats of PE treatment for PTSD (massed and intensive outpatient program) i

Cognitive biases: potential behavioral marker for future development of postpartum depression and childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

Postpartum Depression (PPD) and Childbirth Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CB-PTSD) are psychiatric conditions that cause significant distress. Yet despite their high prevalence and decades of research, knowledge about causal cognitive mechanisms that may assist in predicting or preventing these conditions is still missing. One characteristic of PPD and CB-PTSD that may contribute to their early prevention is the existence of cognitive biases concerning future parenting. Cognitive biases have been shown to play an important role in the etiology of various other psychiatric disorders, including

Relationships between lateral hypothalamic orexin circuits and electroacupuncture-induced mitigation of anxiety in a post-traumatic stress disorder model.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a distressing condition characterized by persistent negative affective states. Electroacupuncture (EA) is a clinically recognized, safe, and efficacious treatment for managing negative emotions associated with PTSD. However, the neural circuits involved in the effects of EA on these emotional disturbances remain unclear. METHODS: A modified single prolonged stress (MSPS) procedure was used to develop a mouse model presenting PTSD-like anxiety-related behaviors (ALBs). Adeno-associated viral tracing showed excitatory synaptic transmission fr

Shared genetic risk and causal associations between Post-traumatic stress disorder and migraine with antithrombotic agents and other medications.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that frequently co-occurs with pain disorders including migraine. There are proposed biological, genetic and environmental factors associated with both PTSD and migraine suggesting shared etiology. Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have been used to identify genomic risk loci associated with various disorders and to investigate genetic overlap between traits. There is a significant genetic correlation between PTSD and migraine with no evidence of a causal relationship that could be attributed to pleiotropy. Cross-disorder gen

Nose-to-brain delivery of quercetin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles improves post-traumatic stress disorder-like phenotypes in mice.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a stressful mental illness that arises after exposure to unforeseen traumatic events. The majority of PTSD cases are often refractory to pharmacological interventions. Herein, considering the neuroprotective effects of quercetin and chitosan in several brain disorders, we examined the effect of quercetin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (QCNPs), administered via nose-to-brain delivery, on PTSD-like phenotypes in mice. QCNPs were synthesized using the ethanol injection method. We observed uniform spherical structure and 120-170 nm diameter of nanoparticles

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom clusters associated with an indicator of heart rate variability: The ADVANCE cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) is governed by sympathetic and parasympathetic regulatory systems. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) may influence these systems and consequently affect cardiovascular functioning. METHODS: The sample consisted of 860 UK male military personnel approximately half of whom had sustained physical combat injuries in Afghanistan. HRV was measured via Root-Mean Square of Successive Differences (RMSSD) in normal heart beats and PTSD using a self-report questionnaire (Posttraumatic Checklist-Civilian version (PCL)). Associations between probable PTSD statu

Construction of a visual nomogram prediction model for post-traumatic stress disorder in mothers of very low birth weight infants.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs) continues to rise globally. These infants face increased susceptibility to preterm-related complications and potential long-term chronic health conditions, creating significant psychological and economic burdens for their families. Mothers of VLBWIs demonstrate substantially higher risks of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared to mothers of term infants. Maternal PTSD can impair psychosocial functioning, compromise therapeutic relationships, and disrupt early mother-infant bonding, with potentially last

Treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Canadian Special Operation Forces Command With Ketamine Plus Cervical Sympathetic Blockade.

INTRODUCTION: Canadian Special Operation Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) operators have been extensively deployed in recent conflicts. They are at risk of trauma and blast exposure as well as the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and blast traumatic brain injury (bTBI). Current psychotherapy and pharmacological approaches provide suboptimal resolution of PTSD and bTBI symptoms. Prior research has shown that ketamine infusion and cervical sympathetic blockade (CSB) have reduced PTSD and bTBI symptoms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 11 patients, including CANSOFCOM members, were
