To determine the feasibility of third kidney transplantation, the experience at the University of Iowa was evaluated. The success of 14 such transplantations was dependent on the outcome of both of the previous graft operations. Three successful third transplantations with graft survival of 6 years, 3 years, and 1 year have occurred in recipients with more than 1 year survival of a previous kidney. Conversely, graft loss due to rejection developed in all patients who experienced graft survival of less than 1 year for both antecedent grafts. Moreover, HLA-A and -B matching and level of presensi

We performed penetrating keratoplasties in eight eyes with opaque corneas from healed corneal lacerations that extended into the corneoscleral limbus. We found dense fibrovascular membranes that extended from the laceration site over the surface of the iris into the angle in several cases and posteriorly to involve the ciliary body in all cases. In seven eyes moderate to severe increases of intraocular pressure occurred postoperatively. Additionally, five eyes had retinal detachments which were either present at the time of surgery or which developed postoperatively. The corneal grafts remaine

During the period 1964--1978 700 renal transplants were given to 602 patients. Eight patients had a history of tumour before transplantation. After transplantation six cases with a de novo tumour were found. The treatment of the pretransplant tumours was completed on average 3 years before transplantation. The average interval from transplantation to discovery of de novo tumour was 2 years. The pretransplant tumours appeared 5 to 9 years before last control (Jan. 79) (mean 8 years). Two of the transplanted patients with previous tumours died later of their tumours. The others are still alive. …

Immunosuppressive treatment enhances the risk of pulmonary and other infections. Tuberculosis is a predictable complication in transplanted patients. The present material comprises 584 kidney transplantation patients, ten of whom had had a previous history of tuberculosis. After transplantation ten patients presented with pulmonary tuberculosis during immunosuppressive treatment. One of the patients to whom no prophylactic antituberculous treatment had been given presented with a relapsing tuberculosis. The results of routine antituberculous treatment were excellent, but graft and patient surv

Ten years' experience of renal transplantation in 40 children (aged 5--18 years) is reviewed. Including 3 second transplantations 40 cadaver grafts and 3 living donor grafts were transplanted. Mean graft survival was found to be 19 months, the longest being 8 years. At the time of last examination 24 children were alive wtith a functioning graft (mean serum creatinine level 1.5 mg/dl). After graft failure 9 children were again on intermittent hemodialysis. 7 children had died mainly because of infections or cardiovascular complications. Cumulative survival rate of patients and cadaver grafts a

Thirty-one children received 38 kidney transplants from 22 live and 16 cadaver donors. Among the 31 patients, 25 received one transplant each, 5 received two transplants each and 1 received three transplants. Peritoneal or hemodialysis (or both) was carried out in 22 patients, with an average dialytic maintenance of 12 weeks before transplantation. Posttransplant immunosuppressive therapy included prednisone and azathioprine. Antilymphocyte globulin was administered to 33 recipients as adjunctive immunosuppressive therapy. At present, 23 patients have functioning allografts, 3 are on hemodialy…

From July 1967 to September 1974, 26 kidney transplantations were carried out in 16 children aged 6 to 17 years, in Gotherburg. The average age at the primary transplantation was 12 years and average body weight 29.7 kg. Five patients had familial juvenile nephronophthisis, 5 chronic glomerulonephritis, 5 chronic pyelonephritis, and one bilateral Wilms's tumour. Four patients were predialytic. Fourteen grafts came from living related donors. The surgical technique was standard as was the immunosuppression with azathioprine and cortisone; exceptionally antilymphocyte globulin was used. Thirteen
