OBJECTIVE: To explore the effectiveness and related issues in the treatment of multiple segments of thoracolumbar tuberculosis through posterior unilateral debridement with bone graft and internal fixation.
METHODS: The clinical data of 29 patients with multiple segments of thoracolumbar tuberculosis who met the selection criteria were retrospective analyzed between January 2012 and July 2015. There were 17 males and 12 females, with age of 21-62 years (mean, 37.4 years). Lesions contained 3-8 vertebral segments, including 3 segments in 6 cases, 4-6 segments in 17 cases, and 7-8 segments in 6

A 29-year-old man with painless ulcers on the lumbar and inguinal regions associated with purulent discharge of 1.5 years' duration presented to our outpatient clinic. Dermatological examination revealed palpable nodules, discharging sinuses and scars on the left lumbar, gluteal and inguinal regions. According to the clinical, histopathological, scintigraphy, and magnetic resonance imaging findings as well as mycobacteriological examinations, the patient was diagnosed with Pott's disease with scrofuloderma and psoas abscess. Herein, we present an interesting case of Pott's disease with scroful

The paper presents a note of adrenal tuberculosis. The latter is difficult to diagnose and even a large lesion cannot be diagnosed by traditional means. Computed tomography fails to differentiate a tumor process from specific inflammation. The diagnosis can be verified only when invasive procedures are applied and in cases of destructive lesion or suspected tumor adrenalectomy is not only a diagnostic, but also therapeutic technique.

OBJECTIVES: To report the clinical features and outcome of 24 Brazilian patients with optic neuromyelitis syndrome (ONM); discuss the underlying pathological events associated with the ONM syndrome; review the nosological situation of ONM in the group of inflammatory and demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with ONM treated at the Hospital da Lagoa, Rio de Janeiro were studied. Demographic, clinical, magnetic resonance imaging, cerebrospinal fluid, and pathological data were analysed.
RESULTS: The study consisted of 20 women, four men of whom 1

PURPOSE: To evaluate characteristic and reliable MRI patterns of different inflammatory lesions of the spinal cord and the nerve roots in immunologically compromised and immunologically competent patients in order to be able to establish a correct diagnosis based on MRI findings.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The MRI examinations of 52 patients (27 men, 25 women, mean age 38.5 years, range 14-75 years) with proven inflammatory lesions (39 patients) or tumorous/postactinic lesions of the spinal cord (6 patients) and vascular malformations of the spinal cord (7 patients) were retrospectively analyzed.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of one-stage posterior surgery via unilateral musculussacrospinalis iliac flap approach in treatment of lumbosacral tuberculosis.
METHODS: Between August 2011 and October 2014, 13 patients with lumbosacral tuberculosis were treated by one-stage posterior reserved posterior ligament complex, lesion debridement, bone graft fusion, and internal fixation via unilateral musculussacrospinalis iliac flap approach. There were 8 males and 5 females, aged from 22 to 57 years, with an average age of 35 years. The disease duration ranged from 2 to 19 mo

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety of nano-hydroxyapatite/polyamide 66 (n-HA/PA66) bioactive support in bone grafting and fusion for elderly patients with lumbar tuberculosis, and to analyze its effectiveness and advantages by comparing with autologous iliac bone grafting.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 48 elderly patients with lumbar tuberculosis who met the selection criteria between January 2017 and January 2020. The patients all underwent one-stage posterior pedicle screw internal fixation combined with anterior lesion removal and bone grafting and fusion, of which 2

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to evaluate the surgical indications, clinical efficacy, and preliminary experiences of nonstructural bone grafts for lumbar tuberculosis (TB).
METHODS: Thirty-four patients with lumbar TB who were treated with nonstructural bone grafts were retrospectively assessed. The operative time, operative blood loss, hospital stay, bone graft fusion time, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration, visual analog scale (VAS) score, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) impairment grade, and Cobb a

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical effect of the anterior debridement, bone fusion, single screw-rod fixation for the treatment of lumbosacral tuberculosis.
METHODS: From March 2005 to February 2011,18 patients with lumbosacral (L3-S1) tuberculosis (including 13 males and 5 females with an average age of 38.5 years old ranging from 24 to 61 years) were treated with removing focus completely, large piece of iliac bone strut grafting, single screw-rod vertebral lateral anterior internal fixation through anterior extraperitoneal approach. Destructive lesions of vertebral bodies in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) have for a long time been regarded as inflammatory changes, sometimes of tuberculous etiology. However, observations during recent years have established that these destructions in fact are non-unions after fractures. A case of spinal pseudarthrosis with paraplegia in a patient with advanced AS is presented. After combined anterior and posterior decompression as well as fusion using plate fixation, the neurological symptoms regressed completely and early mobilization of the patient was possible.

BACKGROUND: In the USA, Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is more likely to be found in foreign-born individuals, and those co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are more likely to have tuberculous meningitis. The literature is lacking in details about the clinical workup of patients presenting with tuberculous meningitis with encephalopathic features who are co-infected with HIV. This report demonstrates a clinical approach to diagnosis and management of tuberculous meningitis.

There are no specific treatments for patients with acute, severe neurological deficits caused by neuromyelitis optica (NMO) who fail to recover after treatment with high-dose corticosteroids. We evaluated the clinical response of anti-tuberculosis treatment (ATT) in patients suffering from steroid-refractory NMO, and investigated the correlation between NMO and tuberculous infection of the central nervous system (CNS). We conducted this prospective, controlled study in southern China. Twelve patients with steroid-refractory NMO were monitored during ATT and compared with a control group of 13

Physicians, Dickens scholars, and historians have tried to diagnose the condition that affected Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol. Leading entities include tuberculosis (TB), rickets, malnutrition, cerebral palsy, spinal dysraphism, and renal tubular acidosis. This article posits that an examination of the environment of London of 1820 to 1843 (when the novella was written) can provide important clues as to his condition. The blackened skies from burning coal, the crowding of people in tenements, the limited diet of the underclass, and the filth of London resulted in a haven for infectious disease

It seems likely that an old tubercular lesion of the lung had been activated during Wolfe's acute pneumonia and that the disease had spread to the brain. The chest x-ray with the right upper lobe infiltrate was certainly typical of pulmonary tuberculosis, and the spinal fluid findings were characteristic of tuberculous meningitis with 230 cells, 75% of which were mononuclear, which Dandy felt "practically made the diagnosis." Tuberculosis was so prevalent worldwide in the early 20th Century, around the time of Wolfe's birth, but began to decline dramatically in the early 1950s with the introdu
