Memory and generativity in very high functioning autism: a firsthand account, and an interpretation.

JS is a highly able person with Asperger syndrome whose language and intellectual abilities are, and always have been, superior. The first part of this short article consists of JS's analytical account of his atypical memory abilities, and the strategies he uses for memorizing and learning. JS has also described specific difficulties with creative writing, which are outlined here. The second part of the article consists of an interpretation of the problems JS describes in terms of their implications for understanding the problems of generativity that contribute to the diagnostic impairments of…

[Black Death in Constantinople (1343-1466].

The Black Death visited Constantinople eleven times between 1348, when the epidemic surged in the Mediterranean world, and 1466 when our inquiry ends. We know of these visits from the writings of eye-witnesses who describe their experiences in correspondence written at that time, in stories reconstructed retrospectively, or in theological discussions. After having related the story of these eleven epidemic episodes, this article will try to catch, through these sources, the medical perception of the plague by contemporaries, its social consequences and its psychological, spiritual and theologi…

[Cryotherapy in the complex restorative treatment of children with infantile cerebral palsy].

Children with spastic diplegia, hemiparetic and hyperkinetic forms of infantile cerebral paralysis were treated with local cryoapplications onto the hands. During the course of cryotherapy the authors studied interference and needle EMGs of the forearm muscles. Local cryotherapy induced a reduction in the muscle tone by gradual switching off the activity of individual motor units. Cryotherapy diminished the intensity of hyperkineses and increased the functional possibilities of the hand so that writing became possible. A conclusion is made that a decrease in the level of afferentation alters t…

Polymyxin B hemoadsorption in endotoxic septic shock: ten questions on the Tigris trial.

The Tigris trial recently reported that polymyxin B hemoadsorption (PMX) achieved a high posterior probability of benefit for mortality in adults with endotoxic septic shock (endotoxemia with multiple organ failure). The trial used a Bayesian framework with a prior derived from a subgroup of an earlier trial (EUPHRATES) and this subgroup was used to design eligibility criteria for Tigris. Ten questions that expose the trial's strengths and limitations are answered in this review. Writing as the trial investigators, our intention is to make the reasoning behind these decisions explicit, so that…

The Spirit and Strength of Nursing Leadership.

Before writing my editorial for each issue, I think carefully about what I want to say to the readership of the Canadian Journal of Nursing Leadership. For me, this involves reflecting on the evolving challenges of our health and social systems here in Canada and around the globe. The "troubled times" I wrote about a few years ago (Martin-Misener 2022) continue and have deepened and widened with layers of economic, social and political complexity and uncertainty that were unimaginable then. Global and national conflicts and uncertainties, along with fiscal constraints, are impacting everyone a…

Response to "Health-Related Quality of Life After Neonatal Treatment of Symptomatic Tetralogy of Fallot: Insights from the Congenital Cardiac Research Collaborative".

This piece of writing commends the article "Health Related Quality of Life After Neonatal Treatment of Symptomatic Tetralogy of Fallot" for its contributions to pediatric cardiology while noting key limitations. The limited sample size may limit generalizability, and further investigation of comorbidities is required to understand their influence on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The lack of a control group limits interpretation, and longer follow-up periods are required to capture the changing obstacles experienced by children after therapy. Addressing these challenges will provide b…

The experience of south Korean railroad drivers exposed to "person under train" incidents: A qualitative study.

A "person under train" (PUT) incident is a suicidal action involving a person throwing themselves at a moving train. This may cause trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), to railroad drivers. This study investigated the experiences of railroad drivers of a PUT incident. Data were obtained from two drivers through in-depth interviews and personal narratives regarding their PUT experience and personal lives after the incident. Expressing thoughts through writing was an effective intervention that provided insights into their experience. Thus, an educational program combining me…

Supporting Acquisition of Spelling Skills in Different Orthographies Using an Empirically Validated Digital Learning Environment.

This paper discusses how the association learning principle works for supporting acquisition of basic spelling and reading skills using digital game-based learning environment with the Finland-based GraphoLearn (GL) technology. This program has been designed and validated to work with early readers of different alphabetic writing systems using repetition and reinforcing connections between spoken and written units. Initially GL was developed and found effective in training children at risk of reading disorders in Finland. Today GL training has been shown to support learning decoding skills amo…

Let's cut it short: Italian standardization of the MMSPE (Mini-Mental State Pediatric Examination), a brief cognitive screening tool for school-age children.

A pediatric cognitive screening tool has been shaped in three versions according to school class to assess spatial and temporal orientation, language, reading, writing, drawing, number knowledge, memory, praxis and executive functions in children aged 6-13. It has been standardized on an Italian sample of 807 children. Raw scores were adjusted for critical variables (child's age and parents' education) and a cut-off for the resulting global cognitive score was made available for clinical practice. In line with previous research, adapting the Mini-Mental State Examination to pediatric neuropsyc…

Shprintzen-Goldberg syndrome: a rare disorder.

Shprintzen-Goldberg Syndrome is an extremely infrequent disorder of connective tissue, characterized by craniosynostosis and marfanoid features, also known as Marfanoid Craniosynostosis syndrome. The syndrome was first introduced by Sugarman and Vogel' (1981) however, Shprintzen and Goldberg established this as a separate clinical entity in the year 1982. Since then, approximately sixty such cases have been set down in writing in the medical literature. Herein, we present a short review of literature of this rare connective disorder, in order to create awareness about this condition, as the ma…

Written emotional expression during recovery from cocaine dependence: group and individual differences in craving intensity.

We conducted a prospective, single-blind, parallel group, controlled trial to evaluate effects of written emotional expression in patients receiving intensive treatment for cocaine dependence in a residential-unit setting. Randomization to the emotional expression treatment produced changes in blood pressure and mood during writing sessions, possibly because of its ability to stimulate active coping behavior. At an initial follow-up visit, patients that had received written emotional expression reported lower values for craving intensity and were less likely to self-report use of cocaine. Thes…

[Developmental dyslexia: the role of phonological processing for the development of literacy].

Successful early reading and spelling acquisition depends on a number of different skills. Of considerable importance is phonological processing, which is the processing of acoustic signals with linguistic content. Three areas of phonological processing have been found to be most important for reading and writing competence: phonological awareness, naming speed, and phonological working memory. Research on these components suggests that specific interventions tailored to individual phonological processing deficits may prevent later dyslexia. Therefore, it appears mandatory that ear-nose-throat…

A systematic procedure for identifying and classifying children with dyscalculia among primary school children in India.

This paper describes the procedures adopted by two independent studies in India for identifying and classifying children with dyscalculia in primary schools. For determining the presence of dyscalculia both inclusionary and exclusionary criteria were used. When other possible causes of arithmetic failure had been excluded, figures for dyscalculia came out as 5.98% (15 cases out of 251) in one study and 5.54% (78 out of 1408) in the second. It was found in the latter study that 40 out of the 78 (51.27%) also had reading and writing problems. The findings are discussed in the light of previous s…
