Functional abnormalities of the liver uncovered during preoperative routine evaluation were analyzed in 109 donor candidates for 100 cases of living-related liver transplantation (LRLT) performed during the period from June, 1990 to May, 1994 at the Second Department of Surgery, Kyoto University Hospital. High serum transaminase (GOT, GPT) levels were noted in 10 (9.2%) cases among 109 candidates, high alkaline phosphatase in 4 (3.7%), hyperbilirubinemia in 3 (2.8%), anemia in 3 and high choline esterase in 3 cases. Positive hepatitis C antibody (HCV) was also noted in 1 case. Fatty liver was

BACKGROUND: ABO blood groups have certain connections with the occurrence of various infectious diseases. This article mainly explored the association between transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) and ABO blood groups and identified other possible influencing factors.
METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed the TTIs results of 257,117 blood donors and analyzed the relationship between age, gender, and blood groups and TTIs.
RESULTS: The treponema pallidum (TP) infection rate in A and AB blood donors were significantly higher than that in B and O blood donors (p = 0.023), and the TP

BACKGROUND: Rituximab is an induction immunosuppressant essential for ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (ABOi KT). However, studies on its dosing, which differs among countries and transplant centers, are lacking. Therefore, we retrospectively investigated the effectiveness of the induction dose of rituximab against patient mortality, graft failure, and adverse events.
METHODS: We included the studies referring to at least 2 of eligible induction doses (200 mg, 200-500 mg, or 500 mg) of rituximab during ABOi KT and relevant outcomes such as patient survival, graft failure, and bacterial

OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we investigated the effects of promoter polymorphism and an exon-1 mutation (G71R) in the UGT1A1 gene in neonates with unexplained hyperbilirubinemia and direct Coombs-negative [DC(-)] ABO incompatibility.
METHODS: Two-hundred term neonates in their first week of life and without additional icterogenic factors were included in the study. Neonates with a serum total bilirubin (STB) level ≥17 mg/dL constituted the hyperbilirubinemia group (n = 100), while the control group comprised healthy neonates with a STB level <12.9 mg/dL (n = 100). The cases were further

Helicobacter cinaedi (H. cinaedi), a Gram-negative spiral-shaped bacterium, is an enterohepatic non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter species. We report the first case of H. cinaedi bacteremia with cellulitis after liver transplantation. A 48-year-old male, who had been a dog breeder for 15 years, underwent ABO-incompatible living-donor liver transplantation for hepatitis C virus-induced decompensated cirrhosis using an anti-hepatitis B core antibody-positive graft. The patient was preoperatively administered rituximab and underwent plasma exchange twice to overcome blood type incompatibility.

ABO-incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplantation is an established therapy, though its implementation to date has been in part limited by the requirement for additional immunosuppression. Here, we describe the outcomes of 37 patients undergoing ABOi kidney transplantation utilizing perioperative antibody depletion and receiving an identical tacrolimus-based immunosuppressive regimen to contemporaneous ABO-compatible (ABOc) recipients, with the exception that mycophenolate was commenced earlier (7-14 days pretransplant). Antibody depletion was scheduled according to baseline anti-ABO antibody tit

ABO incompatibility is not a barrier to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). However, the impact of an ABO mismatch on the outcome of the HSCT remains controversial. We analyzed whether ABO incompatibility leads to an increased risk of early/late complications, mortality, or increased transfusion requirements. The 147 consecutive allogeneic HSCTs includes 80 ABO-identical and 25 major, 30 minor, and 12 bidirectional ABO-mismatched grafts. The four groups were balanced with respect to disease status at transplantation. Transplantation-related mortality was significantly gr

ABO hemolytic disease of fetus and newborn (ABO-HDFN) occurs almost exclusively in infants of blood group A or B who are born to group O mothers because IgG anti-A or -B occurs more commonly in group O than in group A or B individuals. We report a case of clinically significant ABO-HDFN where the mother was blood group O with elevated IgG anti-A and anti-B titers and delivered a child with an A2B phenotype. This unusual ABO constellation between mother and infant was based on the inheritance of a rare ABO allele encoding for a glycosyltransferase capable of synthesizing both A and B antigens.

The activities of A, B and H in serous cells (S-cells), mucous cells (M-cells) and excretory duct cells were examined in a large number of paraffin sections of three major salivary glands obtained from 91 corpses, using the immunofluorescence technique. The results are: By taking H activity in S-cells of the submandibular gland or A, B and H activity in M-cells of the sublingual gland as an indicator, the salivary glands were classified as Type I showing activity and Type II showing no activity. No glands corresponding to the intermediate type, as seen in the case of saliva, were noted at all.

23 bone marrow transplant recipients whose donors where major ABO-incompatible received marrow depleted of red cells prior to infusion utilizing gravity sedimentation in hydroxyethyl starch. The in vitro red cell-depletion procedure effectively removed 97.8% (mean) of the red cells from the harvested marrows and preserved 86.8% of the nucleated cells and 98.2% of the CFU-C activity in 25.4% of the original volume. All recipients had a significant quantity of isohemagglutinins of both IgM and IgG classes demonstrable in their serum at the time of the marrow infusion. Patients were premedicated

BACKGROUND: Several studies have described associations between ABO blood group and SARS-CoV-2 infection severity in hospitalized patients where group A individuals are over-represented and group O individuals may have a lower infection rate. In convalescent individuals, group B blood donors have higher neutralizing SARS-CoV-2 antibody titers. We analyzed whether there was any correlation of ABO Rh(D) blood group with SARS-CoV-2 infection and with neutralizing antibodies in Australian convalescent plasma (CP) donors.

BACKGROUND: Altered blood flow, which characterizes aortic stenosis (AS), influences von Willebrand factor (VWF) conformation and enhances ADAMTS13 cleavage, potentially influencing factor VIII (FVIII) clearance and plasma levels.
AIM: To investigate whether ABO blood group and genetic variants of cellular receptors involved in VWF/FVIII clearance may interact with AS in determining genotype-driven FVIII levels.
PATIENTS/METHODS: FVIII:c levels were analyzed in patients with severe AS (SAS, n = 115), with coronary artery disease and without valvular heart disease (CAD, n = 300), and healthy

OBJECTIVE: To explore the molecular basis for an individual with rare p phenotype in the P1Pk blood group system.
METHODS: Erythrocyte blood group antigens and antibodies in serum were identified in the proband and five family members with a serological method. Coding regions and flanking untranslated regions of the α1,4-galactosyltransferase gene (A4GALT) encoding P1Pk antigens were amplified with polymerase chain reaction and directly sequenced. The haplotypes of A4GALT in the parents of the proband were also analyzed by cloning sequencing.
RESULTS: The proband was found with a rare p phen

Interrelationships between parameters of humoral immunity with AB0 blood groups have been investigated. The highest content of IgA to transglutaminase was found in A(II) patients, while the lowest content was found in AB(IV) patients. The blood content on anti-gliadin IgA was higher in healthy donors. The oral liquid of periodontic patients contained anti-gliadin IgA and IgB lacking in healthy donors. It have been found that 47% of healthy people and 52.7% of patients are infcted with Helicobacter pylori. In the group of periodontic patients A(II) individually predominated; they were character

The presence of sickle hemoglobin causes accumulation of hemoglobin degradative products that favor oxidative reaction in erythrocytes. Artemisinin derivatives exert antiparasite effects through oxidative reactions within infected erythrocytes. Using [(3)H]-hypoxanthine incorporation, we therefore did an in vitro comparison of IC(50) values for artemisinin in Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes from sickle cell trait (AS) and normal (AA) individuals. IC(50) values for chloroquine served as control. Without drugs, parasite growth was similar in AA and AS erythrocytes. Gender, age and bl

Antibody-mediated rejection is a delicate situation. It rarely occurs but when it does, it usually results in graft dysfunction and frequently, graft loss. There has been no standard protocol for treating antibody-mediated rejection, although several therapeutic protocols have been recommended. Early detection and treatments of suspected antibody-mediated rejection can secure the graft and improve its function. Here, we describe a typical case of antibody-mediated rejection in a 46-year-old woman who was successfully treated with intravenous immunoglobulin, plasmapheresis, and the anti-CD20 mo
