Cataract induction in rabbits with the Nd-YAG laser.

The study of occlusion amblyopia and its therapy has involved animal models of stimulus deprivation achieved by various means, none of which closely simulates human congenital cataract. The authors used the Nd-YAG laser as a means of inducing cataracts in rabbit eyes. Twenty rabbit eyes were treated at various frequency and power settings. High energy YAG laser pulses of 10 mJ produced cataracts that at first resembled large bubbles. Over several days, these bubbles coalesced into smaller opacities. With multiple treatments (usually 150-200 pulses), the authors could create a cataract of a spe…

Spontaneously arrested primary congenital glaucoma.

This case report explores a unique instance of primary congenital glaucoma (PCG), where the expected progression was unexpectedly halted wit … ornea, there was no current evidence of glaucoma. The diagnosis was spontaneously arrested PCG with amblyopia and sensory exotropia. Genetic analysis revealed a CYP1B1 mutation, emphasizing the variable expressivity associated with this mutation. Regular follow-ups were recommended. This case highlights the complexity and variability of PCG presentations an …

Temporary retinal inactivation reverses effects of long-term monocular deprivation in visual cortex by induction of burst mode firing in the thalamus.

Monocular deprivation during an early postnatal critical period causes amblyopia, an impairment of vision in one eye, by altering the development of synapses in the primary visual cortex (V1). Prior studies have shown that these synaptic changes can be rapidly reversed after the critical period by temporarily inactivating the non-deprived (fellow) eye with tetrodotoxin (TTX). Here, we show in mice that the inactivation of one eye causes dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) neurons postsynaptic to the other eye to fire in high-frequency bursts due to recruitment of the low-threshold voltage…

OPTIC DISK COLOBOMA MAY TRIGGER MULTIPLE EVANESCENT WHITE DOT SYNDROME: EXPANDING THE CLINICAL SPECTRUM.

PURPOSE: To report a case of secondary multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS) that occurred in a patient with optic disk coloboma. METHODS: A case report. RESULTS: A 23-year-old otherwise healthy man experienced decreased vision and photopsia in the right eye for one month. He reported poor visual acuity in the left eye because of refractive amblyopia. His best-corrected visual acuity was 20/100 in the right eye and 20/80 in the left eye. An examination of the right eye showed that the patient had optic disk coloboma. The results of multimodal imaging indicated MEWDS in the right eye…

Paediatric retinal detachment: a review.

Paediatric retinal detachment (PRD) is an uncommon and challenging disease; it differs from adult detachments in etiology, anatomical characteristics, management and prognosis. PRDs can be particularly challenging, even for the most expert paediatric surgeons due to the higher prevalence of total retinal detachments, late diagnosis and bilateral involvement with respect to those which occur in adulthood. Moreover, the anatomical success, when achieved, is frequently not related to a functional recover. Postsurgical adverse events, refractive errors and amblyopia may additionally undermine the …

Early reconstruction surgery resolving visual occlusion and ocular malformation: a case report.

Congenital ocular malformation may lead to failure of the development of ocular regions and visual function in the pediatric population. Orbital bones are established within the first 2 months of embryogenesis. Any abnormalities may lead to failure in development of the ocular region. In this case report, we present a newborn with congenital canthus malposition, a distorted tarsus, and mild enophthalmos caused by an embryogenesis fibroma, which although rare, can result in amblyopia. Surgical resection of the fibroma followed by orbital reconstruction of the canthus, correction of malposition …

Axial myopia in congenital ptosis: an animal model.

Congenital ptosis in humans has been associated with anisometropia, myopia, astigmatism, and amblyopia. Scientific evidence has shown that visual deprivation causes axial myopia in animals. This study using chicks was undertaken to investigate an animal model of congenital ptosis and the effects of lid position on ocular development. Eyelid ptosis was surgically induced in one eye each of white leghorn chickens within 48 hours after hatching. The chicks were raised under natural diurnal lighting. Thirty days after inducing ptosis, the chicks were killed and their eyes enucleated and photograph…
