Pro-oxidant and antioxidant factors in acute intermittent porphyria: family studies.

Given the crucial role of iron and porphyrins in oxidative cellular damage in the chronic porphyrias, we undertook an extensive study in families with acute porphyrias to evaluate the possible role of similar oxidative damage in these diseases, whose natural history is often also complicated by neoplastic evolution. Four unrelated patients with acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) were studied together with 37 members of four different families. Aminolevulinic acid and porphobilinogen were measured in urine, and porphyrins in urine, plasma and stools. The activity of the congenitally deficient e

Associations between drugs administered during pregnancy and congenital abnormalities of the fetus.

In a retrospective study to compare the drug consumption during pregnancy of mothers of infants with congenital abnormalities and of those without, over 97% of 1,369 mothers took prescribed drugs and 65% self-administered drugs. Significantly more mothers of infants with congenital abnormalities took aspirin, antacids, dextroamphetamine, phenobarbitone, sodium amytal, other barbiturates, cough medicines, iron, sulphonamides, and nicotinamide than mothers in the control group. However, most mothers taking analgesics, antacids, appetite suppressants, barbiturates, cough medicines, iron, sulphona

Impact of iron fortification on anaemia and iron deficiency among pre-school children living in Rural Ghana.

Anaemia in young sub-Saharan African children may be due to the double burden of malaria and iron deficiency. Primary analysis of a double-blind, cluster randomized trial of iron containing micronutrient powder supplementation in Ghanaian children aged 6 to 35 months found no difference in malaria risk between intervention and placebo groups. Here, we performed a secondary analysis of the trial data to assess the impact of long-term prophylactic iron fortificant on the risk of iron deficiency and anaemia in trial subjects. This population-based randomized-cluster trial involved 1958 children a

Comparison of nutrient intake between patients with periodontitis and healthy subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have shown that inflammatory diseases can be influenced by nutritional factors. For this reason, this study was designed to evaluate the food intake of patients with periodontal disease in comparison to healthy subjects using a 7-day food record (7-DFR). METHOD AND MATERIALS: The study population consisted of 42 patients with chronic periodontitis and 38 healthy subjects (controls). Periodontitis was diagnosed by using the Plaque Index, Sulcus Bleeding Index, and measurement of probing depth. All participants completed a 7-DFR, which was analyzed with DGE-PC Professi

What Should We Eat? Biopolitics, Ethics, and Nutritional Scientism.

Public health advocates, government agencies, and commercial organizations increasingly use nutritional science to guide food choice and diet as a way of promoting health, preventing disease, or marketing products. We argue that in many instances such references to nutritional science can be characterized as nutritional scientism. We examine three manifestations of nutritional scientism: (1) the simplification of complex science to increase the persuasiveness of dietary guidance, (2) superficial and honorific references to science in order to justify cultural or ideological views about food an

Interactions of thiamin, riboflavin, and other B-vitamins.

Interactions of the B-complex vitamins are essential in the performance of metabolic and catabolic reactions in the body. Even vitamin C and the fat-soluble vitamins may be involved in these interactions. Clinical and biochemical aberrations associated with various disease states can often be explained on the basis of these vitamin interrelationships. Health and nutritional well-being are dependent upon the maintenance and proper functioning of these vitamin-dependent metabolic pathways.

The Importance and Essentiality of Natural and Synthetic Chelators in Medicine: Increased Prospects for the Effective Treatment of Iron Overload and Iron Deficiency.

The supply and control of iron is essential for all cells and vital for many physiological processes. All functions and activities of iron are expressed in conjunction with iron-binding molecules. For example, natural chelators such as transferrin and chelator-iron complexes such as haem play major roles in iron metabolism and human physiology. Similarly, the mainstay treatments of the most common diseases of iron metabolism, namely iron deficiency anaemia and iron overload, involve many iron-chelator complexes and the iron-chelating drugs deferiprone (L1), deferoxamine (DF) and deferasirox. E

Nutritional survey in an iron- and folate-deficient population.

A high prevalence of folate and iron-deficiency anemia was found in women and children of Kiryat Shmoneh, an Upper Galilee community. Malnutrition was assumed to be partially responsible for these deficiencies. To verify this assumption, a detailed nutrition survey was carried out in 30 families, comprising 232 individuals in this community. A low overall caloric intake was found in 30% of the population studied. The dietary folates consumed were much below the recommended dietary allowance in all subjects. In over 60% of the subjects investigated, the daily iron intake was also below the reco

Effect of daily and weekly micronutrient supplementation on micronutrient deficiencies and growth in young Vietnamese children.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies remain common in preschool children in developing countries. Interventions focus on single micronutrients and often lack effectiveness. Weekly instead of daily supplementation may improve effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: The efficacy of weekly and daily supplementation in reducing anemia prevalence and in improving the zinc, vitamin A, and growth status of 6-24-mo-old Vietnamese children was investigated. DESIGN: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, the daily group (n = 55) received 8 mg elemental Fe (as iron sulfate), 5 mg elemental Zn (as zinc sul

[Various aspects of the effect of nutritional factors on the metabolism and biological action of aflatoxin B1 in the rat liver].

Interrelationships between the quality of nutrition, oxidative hydroxylation of aflatoxin B1 and lipid peroxidation were studied in biomembranes of hepatocyte endoplasmic reticulum of growing male rats of the WAG strain. Activity of the liver microsomal monooxygenase, lipid peroxidation as well as metabolism of aflatoxin B1 were shown to depend on presence of three essential amino acids (lysine, methionine and threonine) and vitamins A, E and C. Deficiency of these compounds altered the aflatoxin metabolism causing formation of highly reactive metabolites, which might accelerate the carcinogen

Relationship between glutathione and polyamine metabolism after partial hepatectomy in alcohol-treated rats.

In a liver regeneration inhibiting model after partial hepatectomy in rats, we determined hepatic glutathione concentration and studied its relation with polyamine, an indicator of liver regeneration. Experiment 1: Male ODS rats and Wistar rats as control were maintained with vitamin C-deficient diets for 2 weeks. In the alcohol group, 3 g/kg of ethanol was administered orally 1 hr before partial hepatectomy. Experiment 2: Wistar rats were divided into four groups, according to the presence or absence of alcohol and vitamin E (VE), and a 6-week pair-feeding was done. As for partial hepatectomy

[Preliminary study on nutrition and precancerous lesions of the esophagus in the adolescents].

This paper reports the prevalence of chronic esophagitis and nutritional status among 538 persons 15-26 years old in the high-risk area of esophageal cancer. 166 subjects were from households with history of esophageal cancer while 372 from households without. The frequency of chronic esophagitis among male and female adolescents in the high risk areas (37.6% and 36%) was significantly, higher than that in the low risk areas. Furthermore, the frequency of chronic esophagitis in the adolescents in households with history of esophageal cancer was also higher than that without history of this can

[Relationship between vitamin status (A, B1, B2, B6, and C), clinical features and nutritional habits in a population of old people (author's transl)].

112 patients in a medical ward were examined clinically and biochemically with regard to their vitamin status (plasma vitamin A, plasma vitamin C, blood glutathione reductase, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, N-methyl nicotinic acid amide and pyridoxic acid excretion). The nutritional habits were assessed by means of a questionnaire. The results of these two examinations were correlated with the clinical findings. The assessment of the vitamin B2 status showed a deficiency in 8 cases and a marginal vitamin B2 supply in a further 4 cases. The thiamine intake was insufficient in 43 cases and marginal in

Addressing micronutrient deficiencies and vitamin metabolism disorders in pediatric pulmonary hypertension: a strategic proposal for low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric pulmonary hypertension (PH) is traditionally managed under a strict hemodynamic paradigm, often overlooking systemic metabolic and nutritional drivers. This review introduces the "Cellular Deprivation Model" to evaluate how specific micronutrient deficiencies and metabolic blocks accelerate pulmonary vasculopathy. METHODS: A systematic, PRISMA-compliant search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE for literature published between January 2000 and April 2026. Keywords intersected pediatric PH with malnutrition, avitaminosis, iron deficiency, and inborn errors of metabolism. Out
