General equilibrium effects of a supply side GHG mitigation option under the Clean Development Mechanism.

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is considered a key instrument to encourage developing countries' participation in the mitigation of global climate change. Reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the energy supply and demand side activities are the main options to be implemented under the CDM. This paper analyses the general equilibrium effects of a supply side GHG mitigation option-the substitution of thermal power with hydropower--in Thailand under the CDM. A static multi-sector general eq

Crimean-congo haemorrhagic fever virus circulates within broad ecological networks of ticks and vertebrates.

We produced spatial datasets of the known distribution of Orthonairovirus haemorrhagiae (formerly Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus, CCHFV) by compiling human cases, virus isolations, and serological data from humans and animals, spanning from Europe to southern Africa, with the aim of virus range modelling. Models based solely on climatic variables produced unrealistic and overly extensive predictions, overestimating suitability in northern Europe and confirming that climate alone poorly explains CCHFV range. Approaches using only tick species distributions underperformed in many parts o

Modeling the potential impact of storm surge and sea level rise on coastal archaeological heritage: A case study from Georgia.

Climate change poses great risks to archaeological heritage, especially in coastal regions. Preparing to mitigate these challenges requires detailed and accurate assessments of how coastal heritage sites will be impacted by sea level rise (SLR) and storm surge, driven by increasingly severe storms in a warmer climate. However, inconsistency between modeled impacts of coastal erosion on archaeological sites and observed effects has thus far hindered our ability to accurately assess the vulnerability of sites. Modeling of coastal impacts has largely focused on medium-to-long term SLR, while obse

Potential risk of heartworm infection in the United States of America and its projected incidence by 2100.

BACKGROUND: Heartworm disease, caused by the parasitic roundworm Dirofilaria immitis, is a vector-borne zoonosis transmitted by culicid mosquitoes and widely distributed in the USA, where prevalence is highest in the southeastern states. Transmission dynamics are influenced by environmental and anthropogenic factors, and climate change is expected to modify its distribution. Within a One Health framework, this study generates monthly and annual risk maps for heartworm transmission in the USA and projects the habitat suitability of vectors to the year 2100. METHODS: Ecological niche models wer

Climate drivers and winter constraints of dengue epidemics: a 10-year epidemiological perspective study in the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is hyperendemic in the Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR), where transmission is driven by Aedes mosquitoes and influenced by large-scale climatic phenomena, including the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). As a landlocked nation, the Lao PDR experiences sharper winter temperature declines than coastal regions, which may impose a seasonal "bottleneck" on vector survival and dengue transmission. This study examined whether winter minimum temperatures act as a seasonal transmission bottleneck, alongside the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI)

The influence of heatwaves on traffic safety in five cities across Québec with different thermal landscapes.

BACKGROUND: This study assesses the impact of heatwaves on road safety in five Québec cities (Montréal, Québec City, Laval, Longueuil, and Sherbrooke) from June to September 2015-2022. Using Urban Heat Island (UHI), 90th and 95th percentile thresholds for heatwaves, we analyze their effects on collisions, traffic injuries, and killed and seriously injured (KSI) cases. METHODS: Traffic data were analyzed across two heatwave definitions, utilizing a time-stratified case-crossover design. UHI was approximated using the annual maximum of mean warm-season land surface temperatures (LST) derived fr

Weather integrated multiple machine learning models for prediction of dengue prevalence in India.

Dengue is a rapidly spreading viral disease transmitted to humans by Aedes mosquitoes. Due to global urbanization and climate change, the number of dengue cases are gradually increasing in recent decades. Hence, an early prediction of dengue continues to be a major concern for public health in countries with high prevalence of dengue. Creating a robust forecast model for the accurate prediction of dengue is a complex task and can be done through various data modelling approaches. In the present study, we have applied vector auto regression, generalized boosted models, support vector regression

Environmental factors and mobility predict COVID-19 seasonality in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: We recently showed that seasonal patterns of COVID-19 incidence and Influenza-Like Illnesses incidence are highly similar, in a country in the temperate climate zone, such as the Netherlands. We hypothesize that in The Netherlands the same environmental factors and mobility trends that are associated with the seasonality of flu-like illnesses are predictors of COVID-19 seasonality as well. METHODS: We used meteorological, pollen/hay fever and mobility data from the Netherlands. For the reproduction number of COVID-19 (Rt), we used daily estimates from the Dutch State Institute for

Seasonal Variation and Environmental Correlates of Dengue Outbreaks in Purba Medinipur: A Retrospective Study (2017-2023).

Background Dengue fever is a significant public health issue, particularly in tropical regions such as Purba Medinipur, West Bengal. The Aedes aegypti mosquito, the primary vector for the dengue virus, thrives in warm and humid environments. Previous studies have shown that climatic variables, including rainfall and temperature, significantly impact mosquito breeding and the transmission dynamics of dengue. This study seeks to explore the correlation between these environmental factors and the seasonal variation of dengue outbreaks in Purba Medinipur from 2017 to 2023. Methods This retrospecti

Net release of CO2 from thawing permafrost soil carbon predicted to occur earlier in this century.

Accelerating permafrost thaw may release vast deep (>3 meters) frozen soil carbon as carbon dioxide (CO2), but this magnitude remains uncertain because current Earth system models (ESMs) lack deep carbon processes. Using an updated ORCHIDEE-MICT model simulating Pleistocene Yedoma formation and Holocene peatland development, we project northern (>30°N) carbon responses under climate change. Compared to the original model, including these deep carbon pools improves agreement with observations and reduces net CO2 uptake by 47 to 74 petagrams of carbon from 1900 to 2100 across three future scenar

Mobile education builds resilience during shocks in five countries.

Education systems need to withstand frequent shocks, including disease and climate events, which close schools for more than 222 million children1. During these emergencies, alternative models are needed to deliver education. However, rigorous evaluation of effective educational approaches in these settings is challenging and rare, especially across multiple countries. Here we present results from five randomized trials in India, Kenya, Nepal, the Philippines and Uganda to evaluate the provision of education in emergency settings. We test multiple scalable models of remote targeted tutoring in

Postoperative remote first care for financially and environmentally sustainable healthcare.

This study aims to quantify the financial and environmental savings associated with remote follow up in patients undergoing lower limb arterial surgery. A prospective observational study evaluating financial cost(fC) and environmental cost(eC) of postoperative follow-up models. Remote-first screening(RFS), where all patients were reviewed remotely, and complications triaged for face-to-face assessment and treatment. The second model was remote-first treatment(RFT): all patients were reviewed remotely, but only high-risk complications trigger face-to-face review. Both were compared with convent

The dog as a sentinel and animal model for coccidioidomycosis.

Coccidioidomycosis is a potentially fatal fungal disease of humans and animals that follows inhalation of Coccidioides spp. arthroconidia in the environment. The disease in dogs resembles that in people, and because dogs may be at increased risk of exposure due to their proximity to the ground and digging behavior, they are valuable models for the disease in humans. Dogs have been sentinels for identification of new regions of endemicity in Washington and Texas. Canine serosurveillance has also been used to predict variables associated with environmental presence of Coccidioides spp. Expansion

Fast oxidation of sulfur dioxide by hydrogen peroxide in deliquesced aerosol particles.

Atmospheric sulfate aerosols have important impacts on air quality, climate, and human and ecosystem health. However, current air-quality models generally underestimate the rate of conversion of sulfur dioxide (SO2) to sulfate during severe haze pollution events, indicating that our understanding of sulfate formation chemistry is incomplete. This may arise because the air-quality models rely upon kinetics studies of SO2 oxidation conducted in dilute aqueous solutions, and not at the high solute strengths of atmospheric aerosol particles. Here, we utilize an aerosol flow reactor to perform dire

A localised risk model for liver fluke infection.

Precise and focused risk assessments of liver fluke infection in cattle can be used to increase awareness and promote management uptake. However, accurate estimation of the risk of liver fluke infection in cattle is challenging. Liver fluke disease in adult cattle is typically sub-clinical - meaning infected animals often have no visible symptoms. This is exacerbated by the complex liver fluke life-cycle, which is highly sensitive to climate conditions and requires the presence of the intermediate snail host. The aim of this work was to create a predictive modelling tool that can be used to pr

Environmental Predictors of Habitat Suitability for Tetragonisca angustula (Apidae: Meliponini) in the Andean-Amazonian Transition of Northern Peru.

The stingless bee Tetragonisca angustula (Apidae: Meliponini) is ecologically and socioeconomically important in northern Peru, yet the factors shaping its habitat suitability remain poorly quantified. We modeled current suitability across Amazonas and San Martín using 28 occurrence records: 17 field-georeferenced hive locations and 11 records from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). An initial set of 28 climatic, vegetation, hydrological, topographic, and edaphic predictors was reduced to 15 variables after repeated variance inflation factor analyses. Maximum Entropy models w
