IN BRIEF: This study reveals the reproductive patterns of Mussismilia harttii, associating gametogenesis and spawning with temperature changes. Its findings aid coral conservation and assess climate change impacts on reef ecosystems.
ABSTRACT: Decline of coral reefs worldwide emphasizes the need for biological information to support species conservation and management strategies. Herein, we thoroughly explored the gametogenesis of the endemic and endangered Brazilian coral Mussismilia harttii. A distinct distribution of male (proximal) and female (distal) regions in the same mesentery confirm

Demographic processes that ensure the recovery and resilience of marine populations are critical as climate change sends an increasing proportion on a trajectory of decline. Yet for some populations, recovery potential remains high. We conducted annual monitoring over 9 years (2012-2020) to assess the recovery of coral populations belonging to the genus Pocillopora. These populations experienced a catastrophic collapse following a severe typhoon in 2009. From the start of the monitoring period, high initial recruitment led to the establishment of a juvenile population that rapidly transitioned

A reduction in meat consumption is necessary to mitigate negative impacts of climate change and adverse health outcomes. The UK has an increasingly multi-ethnic population, yet there is little research on meat consumption habits and attitudes among ethnic groups in the UK. We ran a survey (N = 1014) with quota samples for ethnic groups and analyzed attitudes, behaviors and norm perceptions of White, South Asian and Black British respondents. Most respondents believe overconsumption of red and processed meat has negative impacts on health (73.3%) and the environment (64.3%).South Asian responde

BACKGROUND: The healthcare sector must navigate the challenge of caring for individuals affected by climate change while being a significant emitter of carbon emissions. This study focuses on direct sources of carbon emissions from hospital surgical care, a major contributor to the sector's overall carbon footprint. The goal is to identify the main sources of direct carbon emissions in surgical care and to analyze these sources according to the Congruence Model. We employ the Congruence Model for a systemic analysis of emission sources within the organizational context. The change-oriented mod

In the context of climate change, it is of utmost importance to replace the use of fossil fuels as raw material in areas of industrial interest, for example, in the production of chemical inputs. In this context, a viable option is biomass, since by subjecting it to chemical processes such as pyrolysis, it is possible to obtain platform molecules that are the basis for the generation of value-added chemical products. Acetals are molecules obtained from biomass derivatives, which have various applications in cosmetic chemistry, in the pharmaceutical industry as intermediates or final compounds,

Artificial reefs are being increasingly deployed as a coral reef restoration strategy. Additional reef habitats made from conventional substrates (e.g., metal, concrete, etc.) have had limited success in addressing conservation objectives on degraded coral reefs due to structure size and lack of standardized monitoring, and inability to enhance select ecological, and species variables. Technological advances and new restoration methods must be quickly tested and applied on a large scale to curb further deterioration of coral reefs. Here, we present the results of the first deployment of Oceani

In Kenya, the number of adults aged ≥60 is expected to nearly quadruple by 2050, making it one of the most rapidly aging countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Accordingly, we designed the Longitudinal Study of Health and Ageing in Kenya (LOSHAK) to generate novel data to address the health and economic consequences of this demographic transition. Specifically, LOSHAK will investigate the social, economic, environmental, biological, and policy processes that shape late-life health and economic well-being in Kenya. Modeled on the U.S. Health and Retirement Study (HRS), LOSHAK joins a network of

When it was first introduced in 2000, reverse vaccinology was defined as an in silico approach that begins with the pathogen's genomic sequence. It concludes with a list of potential proteins with a possible, but not necessarily, list of peptide candidates that need to be experimentally confirmed for vaccine production. During the subsequent years, reverse vaccinology has dramatically changed: now it consists of a large number of bioinformatics tools and processes, namely subtractive proteomics, computational vaccinology, immunoinformatics, and in silico related procedures. However, the state

The abundant Fe (hydr-) oxides present in wetland sediments can form stable iron (Fe)-organic carbon (OC) complexes (Fe-OC), which are key mechanisms contributing to the stability of sedimentary OC stocks in coastal wetland ecosystems. However, the effects of increased flooding and salinity stress, resulting from global change, on the Fe-OC complexes in sediments remain unclear. In this study, we conducted controlled experiments in a climate chamber to quantify the impacts of flooding and salinity on the different forms of Fe (hydr-) oxides binding to OC in the rhizosphere sediments of S. mari

Reduction in soil fertility and depletion of natural resources due to current intensive agricultural practices along with climate changes are the major constraints for crop productivity and global food security. Diverse microbial populations' inhabiting the soil and rhizosphere participate in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and thereby, improve soil fertility and plant health, and reduce the adverse impact of synthetic fertilizers on the environment. Sulphur is 4th most common crucial macronutrient required by all organisms including plants, animals, humans and microorganisms. Effective st

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a Gram negative, facultative intracellular bacterium that resides in the rhizosphere of tropical soils. B. pseudomallei causes melioidosis, which is transmitted by cutaneous entry, ingestion, or inhalation of contaminated soil or water. Infection with B. pseudomallei can cause a wide array of clinical symptoms such as pneumonia, bone, joint, skin, genitourinary, and central nervous system infections, as well as parotid abscesses in children. Mammalian virulence is linked to the B. pseudomallei intracellular life cycle, which begins with attachment and internalizati

This review addresses advances, directions and opportunities for research on sheep reproduction in the context of the global challenges of food security and climate change, and demand for 'clean, green and ethical' (CGE) animal management. The foundation of CGE management is an understanding of the physiological processes through which the reproductive system responds to changes in the animal's environment. These days, to the main environmental factors (photoperiod, nutrition, pheromones), we need to add stress from extreme weather events. With respect to nutrition in rams, we now have a deepe

PURPOSE: Influenza virus can cause serious respiratory illness sometimes resulting in epidemics and pandemics associated with significant morbidity and mortality across the globe. Hence, continuous surveillance of the activity of the influenza virus and its subtypes is necessary to help the policy makers to take effective and appropriate decisions regarding its control. The study aimed to determine distribution of influenza viruses in Assam of north-east India having subtropical climate that may lead to viral subtype divergence.
METHODS: Clinically suspected ninety cases with Influenza like i

This study aimed to determine seasonal (summer vs. winter) and spatial distribution of the selected heavy elements (HEs) (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb) in soil samples collected from a typical Central European town, Novi Sad, Serbia. The highest Pb concentrations were observed in summer because of intensive ground-flushing, whereas Cu had its highest concentration in winter, which may be attributed to traffic emissions. Source characterization and spatial distribution were carried out using cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), variogram calculation and theoretical model

Tides and Earth-Moon system evolution are coupled over geological time. Tidal energy dissipation on Earth slows E a r t h ' s rotation rate, increases obliquity, lunar orbit semi-major axis and eccentricity, and decreases lunar inclination. Tidal and core-mantle boundary dissipation within the Moon decrease inclination, eccentricity and semi-major axis. Here we integrate the Earth-Moon system backwards for 4.5 Ga with orbital dynamics and explicit ocean tide models that are "high-level" (i.e., not idealized). To account for uncertain plate tectonic histories, we employ Monte Carlo simulatio

BACKGROUND: The most severe form of human malaria is caused by the protozoan parasite Plasmodium falciparum. This unicellular organism is a member of a subgenus of Plasmodium called the Laverania that infects apes, with P. falciparum being the only member that infects humans. The exceptional virulence of this species to humans can be largely attributed to a family of variant surface antigens placed by the parasites onto the surface of infected red blood cells that mediate adherence to the vascular endothelium. These proteins are encoded by a large, multicopy gene family called var, with each v

The molecular evolution of life on earth along with changing environmental, conditions has rendered mankind susceptible to endemic and pandemic emerging infectious diseases. The effects of certain systemic viral and bacterial infections on morbidity and mortality are considered as examples of recent emerging infections. Here we will focus on three examples of infections that are important in pregnancy and early childhood: SARS-CoV-2 virus, Zika virus, and Mycoplasma species. The basic structural characteristics of these infectious agents will be examined, along with their general pathogenic me

Museum specimens represent an unparalleled record of historical genomic data. However, the widespread practice of formalin preservation has thus far impeded genomic analysis of a large proportion of specimens. Limited DNA sequencing from formalin-preserved specimens has yielded low genomic coverage with unpredictable success. We set out to refine sample processing methods and to identify specimen characteristics predictive of sequencing success. With a set of taxonomically diverse specimens collected between 1962 and 2006 and ranging in preservation quality, we compared the efficacy of several
