The estimation of functional parameters of the lower urinary tract in 116 patients with chronic cystitis and 51 patients with chronic nonobstructive pyelonephritis was performed. Urethral instability was revealed in 53 (45.68%) patients with chronic cystitis (mean age, 40.72 +/- 14.45 years), detrusor overactivity--in 10 (8.62%, mean age, 45.55 +/- 13.45 years) patients. Variations in detrusor pressure were 22.16 +/- 15.8 cm H20. Combination of urethral instability and detrusor overactivity was diagnosed in 26 (22.4%) patients of the study group (mean age, 65.16 +/- 10.49 years). The maximum u

Many women who suffer from the symptoms of urinary tract infection have a negative urine culture when conventional methods are used. Their condition is described as 'urethral' (or 'dysuria/frequency') syndrome' (US). As they may be indistinguishable clinically from those with positive cultures antibiotics are often prescribed. Their symptoms are usually recurrent and they may receive many courses of treatment. Some women are said to have 'interstitial cystitis' (IC); they have a long history of symptoms and antibacterial treatment. The urine contains white blood cells (pyuria) and biopsy of th

Lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) presents a global health challenge with symptoms impacting a substantial percentage of the population. The absence of reliable biomarkers complicates the accurate classification of LUTD subtypes with shared symptoms such as non-ulcerative Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS) and overactive bladder caused by bladder outlet obstruction with Detrusor Overactivity (DO). This study introduces a machine learning (ML)-based approach for the identification of mRNA signatures specific to non-ulcerative BPS. Using next-generation sequencing (NGS) transcriptome data from bla

PURPOSE: Urologic chronic pelvic pain syndrome (UCPPS), which encompasses interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome in women and men and chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome in men, is a common, often disabling urological disorder that is neither well understood nor satisfactorily treated with medical treatments. The past 25 years have seen the development and validation of a number of behavioral pain treatments, of which cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is arguably the most effective. CBT combines strategies of behavior therapy, which teaches patients more effective ways of be

OBJECTIVES: A lot of ion channels participate in the regulation of bladder function. TACAN, a new mechanosensitive ion channel, was first discovered in 2020. TACAN has been found to be expressed in many tissues, such as the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and adipose tissue. However, it is unclear whether or not TACAN is expressed in the bladder. In this work, we decided to study the expression and distribution of TACAN in human and rat bladders. Meanwhile, the expression of TACAN in the rat model of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) was studied.
METHODS: Human bladder tissues we

PURPOSE: Chronic pelvic pain syndromes (CPPS) are commonly encountered by urologists and urogynecologists and pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Body maps have been helpful adjuncts to verbal descriptions of pain and may serve a role in phenotyping what is known to be a heterogeneous patient population. The aim of this study was to assess whether patterns of pain as marked on a body map of the pelvis exist among common CPPS diagnoses. The secondary aim was to investigate the association between the total number of pain locations marked on the map and clinical indices in patients with

PURPOSE: We assessed the reliability and validity of an efficient severity assessment for pelvic pain and urinary symptoms in urological chronic pelvic pain syndrome, which consists of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome and chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 578 patients were assessed using brief, empirically derived self-report scales for pelvic pain severity (PPS) and urinary symptom severity (USS) 4 times during a 1-month period and baseline clinic visit that included urological, pain and illness-impact measures. Mild, moderate and

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) has many potential causes and is often a complex disorder with multiple contributing etiologies. The evaluation and treatment of women with CPP often requires a multidimensional approach. The treatment of CPP consists of two approaches: 1) treatment of pain itself or global treatment, and 2) treatment of disease-specific etiologies. Most often, treatment requires a combination of both approaches. This article reviews recent literature in the global treatment of CPP, including pharmacologic, psychotherapy, and neuroablative, as well as specific interventions for endome

BACKGROUND: We examine the effects of low energy shock wave (LESW) on bladder and mitochondrial function in a rat model of HCl induced cystitis, and the influence of dynamic bladder filling volume on LESW responses. Dysregulation of mitochondria function may impact the urothelial barrier and contribute to bladder dysfunction in patients with Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS).
METHODS: Female Sprague-Dawley rats underwent urethral catheterization and intravesical instillation of 0.2 ml of 0.4 N HCl (N = 32) or 0.2 ml saline (N = 8) kept for 90 s. After HCl instillation, the

AIMS: The therapeutic effect of estrogen on interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome is unclear. We aim to explore the effect of estrogen on bladder overactivity in rats with cyclophosphamide-induced cystitis and its underlying mechanism.
METHODS: In vivo cystometry was used to determine the effect of estrogen on bladder excitability. The effect of estrogen on the expression of P2X3 receptors in bladder epithelium was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot. Effect of P2X3 receptors in bladder urothelium on stretch-released adenosine triphosphate was performed by a

Hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels are confirmed to be expressed in bladder interstitial Cajal-like cells (ICC-LCs), but little is known about their possible role in cystitis-associated bladder dysfunction. The present study aimed to determine the functional role of HCN channels in regulating bladder function under inflammatory conditions. Sixty female wild-type C57BL/6J mice and sixty female HCN1-knockout mice were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups, respectively. Cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced cystitis models were successfully established in

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) include storage, voiding and post-micturition symptoms, featuring many urological diseases. Storage symptoms are the most frequent among these and associated with overactive bladder and non-bacterial bladder inflammation such as interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). Gap junction, a key regulator of hyperactive conditions in the bladder, has been reported to be involved in pathological bladder inflammation. Here we report involvement of gap junction in the etiology of storage symptoms in bladder inflammation. In this study, cyclophosphamide-in
