BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic multifactorial dermatosis that can occur through different clinical phenotypes although all exhibit identical pathogenetic mechanisms such as the prurigo nodularis (PN)-like phenotype.
CASE REPORT: Here, we described 11 patients with PN-like AD treated with dupilumab, a human monoclonal IgG4 antibody that inhibits interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-13 (IL-13). Efficacy outcomes were performed at baseline, at first and fourth month after starting treatment. We collected different scores such as NRSi as well as IGA. At the same time, pati

RATIONALE: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic recurrent dermatitis with profound itching, which could be the first manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 53-year-old Chinese man suffered a 6-month history of systemic symmetrical dermatitis, accompanied with profound itching. The patient was diagnosed as "eczema" in several hospitals, and the effects of antihistamine and topical steroid creams were poor. Nocturnal sleep was seriously affected by aggravating pruritus. Laboratorial examination was compatible with AML-M4.
DIAGNOSES: AML-M4 with AD as first manifestat

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies of atopic dermatitis (AD) are often limited by case definitions that have not been validated.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we assessed the accuracy of self-report of AD in a large cohort of US female nurses, the Nurses' Health Study 2 (NHS2). We also provide clinical characteristics of AD in the cohort.
METHODS: We sent an electronic questionnaire to NHS2 participants who previously reported ever having a diagnosis of AD. This questionnaire was designed to confirm cases of AD using previously validated algorithms with >85% specificity. We assessed the associati

OBJECTIVES: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an allergic and inflammatory skin disorder caused by a combination of itching and skin sensitization by allergens. This article investigated whether cordycepin modulates AD symptoms by using an AD murine model.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We evaluated a regulatory effect and specific molecular mechanism of cordycepin on AD induced by the repeated local exposure of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene to dorsal skin of mice. Blood or AD-like skin lesions samples were removed for histopathologic analysis, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, reverse transcription-polymerase ch

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) have an altered prevalence or risk for contact sensitization. Increased exposure to chemicals in topical products together with impaired skin barrier function suggest a higher risk, whereas the immune profile suggests a lower risk.
OBJECTIVE: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the association between AD and contact sensitization.
METHODS: The PubMed/Medline, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched for articles that reported on contact sensitization in individuals with and without AD.
RESULTS: The li

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, recurrent, inflammatory skin disease which predominantly affects children. However, AD may persist until adulthood (persistent AD), or directly start in adults (adult-onset AD). AD often shows a non-flexural rash distribution, and atypical morphologic variants in adults and specific diagnostic criteria are lacking. Moreover, adult AD prevalence as well as detailed data which can characterize persistent vs adult-onset subtype are scant. The aim of this study was to investigate on the main features of adult AD particularly highlighting differences between per

Topical corticosteroid phobia is an important problem in the treatment of atopic dermatitis as it can affect the ability to control disease severity and itch by reducing treatment adherence. Topical corticosteroid phobia often ends up even non-corticosteroid adherence. As such, non-corticosteroid adherence, disease severity and itch are likely to be associated with each other, but their relationship has yet to be thoroughly investigated. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate it in atopic dermatitis. Using data from 1190 participants in an Internet survey, we identified 255 non-cort

BACKGROUND: Mutations in FLG, which encodes profilaggrin, cause ichthyosis vulgaris (IV) and are an important predisposing factor for atopic dermatitis (AD). IV shows autosomal hemidominant (semidominant) inheritance, and patients with bi-allelic FLG mutations tend to have severe IV phenotypes. However, the effect of bi-allelic FLG mutations on AD incidence and severity remains a subject of controversy.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we studied individuals with bi-allelic null FLG mutations to elucidate the effect of bi-allelic FLG mutations on AD incidence and severity.
METHODS: Six individuals

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inflammatory skin condition strongly associated with Staphylococcus aureus colonization and infection. S. aureus strains shift in populations in ~10-year intervals depending on virulence factors. Shifts in S. aureus virulence factors may in part explain the racial differences observed in the levels of prevalence and severity of AD. AD S. aureus isolates collected from 2011 to 2014 (103 isolates) and in 2008 (100 isolates) were examined for the prevalence of genes encoding superantigens (SAgs). The strains from 2011 to 2014 were obtained from AD patients as a part o

A 26-year-old man had a history of severe atopic dermatitis. He was taking immunosuppressive drug. Mitral valve replacement (MVR) had been performed for infective endocarditis March 2008. He came to our hospital in July 2012 complaining of fever of 39 degrees Celsius. According to computed tomography (CT) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), we diagnosed that he had cerebral embolism and bacterial infection of prosthetic valve. Antibiotic treatment was performed for 2 weeks after the onset of cerebral infarction. Then we conducted re-MVR. The postoperative course was satisfactory. He sh

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by an impaired epidermal barrier function combined with a chronic Th2-type inflammatory response and an intense pruritus. Here, we used an experimental mouse model for Th2-type contact hypersensitivity (CHS) to fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) to investigate the potential role of cannabinoid 1 receptors (CB1) in the pathophysiology of mouse atopic-like dermatitis. Mice lacking CB1 receptors globally (Cnr1(-/-) ) or specifically in keratinocytes (KC-Cnr1(-/-) ) as well as wild-type (WT) control mice were sensitized and challenge

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic allergic inflammatory disease characterised by late eczematous lesions and allergenic sensitisation that occur. Skin prick testing has been used for the causative investigation of individual allergens. However, there exists no proper tool to evaluate polysensitisation status. In this study, skin sensitisation indices were suggested, and the clinical significance of polysensitisation was evaluated.
METHODS: A total of 188 AD patients were involved in this study. Blood tests including blood eosinophil % and serum total IgE were conducted. Skin pri

Bacillus Calmette-Guerin extract (BCGE) has been proven to be clinically effective for anaphylactic disease, infectious diseases and cancer. In this study, we investigated the effect of the intramuscular application of BCGE on 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced atopic dermatitis (AD). We established an AD model in BALB/c mice by repeated local exposure of DNCB to the ear and dorsal skin. Following intramuscular application of BCGE, the ear thickness, mast cell infiltration, serum total immunoglobulin E (IgE) and histamine level were measured. In addition, levels of interleukin (IL)-4, IL-

Parthenium hysterophorus is the leading cause of airborne contact dermatitis, a type IV hypersensitivity reaction in India. Though there are reports of it causing type-I hypersensitivity in atopic individuals in the form of allergic rhinitis and asthma, there is very little information on its role in pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD), another predominately type I hypersensitivity. In the present study, we evaluated the presence of immediate hypersensitivity to P. hysterophorus in patients with AD and evaluated the in vitro immunological response of P. hysterophorus SPT positive AD patient
