Use of the medicinal leech in the treatment of ear diseases.

Medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) and the native secretion of their salivary glands diluted with saline (5 times) were successfully used for the treatment of some ear diseases: tinnitus caused by inner-ear affections, acute external otitis and chronic otitis media. The effect of diluted leech saliva injected into the region of the mastoid process by microelectrophoresis was 25-30% lower than that of the medicinal leeches.

Nickel sensitivity: the influence of ear piercing and atopy.

In a group of 612 consecutive patients undergoing routine patch tests for suspected allergic contact dermatitis, more than four-fifths of the 364 women had had their ears pierced, over half gave a history of cutaneous reactions to metallic jewelery and almost one-third were sensitive to nickel. The increase in the frequency of nickel sensitivity in women with pierced ears compared to those with unpierced ears was highly significant (P less than 0.001). In men, nickel sensitivity was much less frequent; occupational factors were often implicated and few cases were related to ear piercing. Jewel…

[Damages to the ears, nose and throat in copper production].

The study embraces 118 workers, engaged actively in the production of copper and sulfuric acid with length of service from 3 to 30 years and more in one of the largest enterprises for nonferrous metallurgy in this country. A detailed examination is performed on the upper respiratory ways and the ears by modern professional pathological otorhinolaryngological methods. In 101 workers (85.6%) are discovered different diseases of the upper respiratory ways and the ears. Very often the pathology is combined. Nearly half of the cases concern injury of the nose-gullet (42.4%). Olfactory disturbance i…

Use of quinolones for treatment of ear and eye infections.

Malignant otitis externa is a severe, necrotizing infection of the external auditory canal which is sometimes fatal. The traditional antimicrobial treatment has usually been the combination of an antipseudomonal beta-lactam and an aminoglycoside, given intravenously for 4 to 8 weeks. Over 100 patients have been treated with a fluoroquinolone alone, most commonly ciprofloxacin given by mouth in a dosage of 750 mg b.i.d. for 6 to 12 weeks. About 90% of patients have been cured. Treatment with a quinolone has the advantage over older treatments that it can be given orally and has a low rate of si

[Cutaneous leishmaniasis of the ear muscle. A case report].

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a parasitic infection which is especially endemic in the southern parts of Europe, in several regions of Africa, and in South and Central America. Whether treatment is necessary or not depends on the virulence of the germ, the infection's localization, and the host's immunological reaction. Because of the high rate of recidivation and the large number of undesirable side-effects of systemic chemotherapy of localized cutaneous leishmaniasis, several methods of local therapy have been tested. This case report demonstrates one of several approaches to the local treatmen

Surgical management of cholesteatoma in an only hearing ear.

The patient with a cholesteatoma in an only hearing ear presents a management dilemma: how best to treat the patient to minimize the chances of developing a severe hearing loss in that ear. Twelve patients managed surgically for cholesteatoma in their only hearing ear are reviewed. The location and extent of the cholesteatoma, the type of operation performed, and postoperative hearing results are presented. Eleven of the 12 patients maintained their bone-conducted speech reception threshold to within 5 dB of the preoperative level during follow-up periods of 2 months to 4 years. Recommendation…

[Clinical assessment of ear size in children and adolescents].

In 1271 children and adolescents of both sexes (596 boys and 675 girls) anthropometric measurements of the "physiognomic external ear length and ear width" were carried out by means of a caliper in order to make the clinical symptoms of macrotia and microtia, respectively, more objective than by clinical impression, only. In the mean ear lengths steadily and annually grow 0.66 mm in boys and 0.46 mm in girls, +/- 2s-border-lines based on a nonlinear regression model y = f(means +/- 2s) = a + b.ln x are calculated: For boys it is y + 2s = 47,9164 + 6,9539.ln x and y-2s = 36,7839 + 6,1172.ln x, …

[Radiologic diagnosis of the middle ear. Possibilities and perspectives].

During the past few years the importance of imaging methods for the diagnosis of head and neck diseases has increased significantly. Due to the rapid development of new techniques like "high-resolution" CT (HR-CT) and magnetic resonance imaging, radiology has become an important factor in the preoperative evaluation of many diseases in our discipline. The middle ear region in particular is known to be a complicated area and was often hard to interpret by radiological methods used so far. In the present paper the diagnostic value of HR-CT is demonstrated. Over the past two years we examined 130…

The microbial environment of the ear canal in health and disease.

Otitis externa is an important disease of dogs and, to a lesser degree, cats. The yeast Malassezia canis is the most common organism demonstrated in ear infections. Coagulase-positive staphylococci are the most common bacteria isolated, often occurring with M. canis. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus are gram-negative bacteria that are frequently encountered. Other bacteria, such as beta-hemolytic streptococci, enterococci, Escherichia coli, and Corynebacterium are also important. Malassezia canis, coagulase-positive staphylococci, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa commonly occur as monoinfections, …

Treatment of a giant congenital hairy nevus of the ear.

A split-thickness skin graft from the abdomen was successfully used to resurface the entire auricle following full-thickness excision of a congenital nevocellular nevus. We found no previous report describing the use of skin grafts to successfully resurface the entire ear and achieve an acceptable aesthetic result.

[Complications of decompression of the internal ear during diving].

Inner ear decompression sickness belongs inner ear barotrauma. It occurs after a dive with factors of risk. The diagnostic needs an accurate history and physical examination which allows emergency treatment: therapeutic recompression, then hyperbaric oxygen and perfusions of vasodilators + corticoids. The symptomatology is mainly vestibular and the discussion between peripheric and/or central lesions is still open.
