Inequalities in determinants of health among Aboriginal and Caucasian persons living with HIV/AIDS in Ontario: results from the Positive Spaces, Healthy Places Study.

OBJECTIVES: Aboriginal Canadians (i.e., First Nations, Inuit and Métis) are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, and experience greater social and economic marginalization and poorer housing conditions. This study sought to understand the differences in the determinants of health and housing-related characteristics between samples of Aboriginal and Caucasian adults living with HIV/AIDS in Ontario. METHODS: We analyzed baseline demographic, socio-economic, health, and housing-related data from 521 individuals (79 Aboriginal and 442 Caucasian) living with HIV/AIDS and enrolled in the Positi

Plant-made vaccines against West Nile virus are potent, safe, and economically feasible.

The threat of West Nile virus (WNV) epidemics with increasingly severe neuroinvasive infections demands the development and licensing of effective vaccines. To date, vaccine candidates based on inactivated, live-attenuated, or chimeric virus, and viral DNA and WNV protein subunits have been developed. Some have been approved for veterinary use or are under clinical investigation, yet no vaccine has been licensed for human use. Reaching the milestone of a commercialized human vaccine, however, may largely depend on the economics of vaccine production. Analysis suggests that currently only novel

Cestode vaccines: origins, current status and future prospects.

Recombinant vaccines have been developed which are highly effective in preventing infection with Taenia ovis in sheep, Taenia saginata in cattle, Taenia solium in pigs and Echinococcus granulosus in livestock animals. T. ovis and T. saginata are economically significant parasites and the commercial success or otherwise of vaccines against them will rely on their economic value. E. granulosus and T. solium are zoonotic parasites that cause cystic hydatid disease and neurocysticercosis, respectively, in humans. Vaccines against these parasites have been developed to assist with the control of tr

Bioenergy carbon capture storage and utilization: a critical review of market dynamics and policy implications.

Bioenergy with carbon capture, utilization, and storage (BECCUS) is a competent technology with the potential to address global climate change challenges. However, its deployment faces significant hurdles across technological, economic, and policy domains. The production of biofuels including ethanol, methane, butanol, and biogas is accompanied by the release of carbon dioxide (CO2). This CO2 can be incorporated into organic molecules through various biochemical routes as part of the metabolic mechanisms of carbon absorption. The efficiency of these carbon assimilation pathways can be improved

Clinical trials for Chagas disease: etiological and pathophysiological treatment.

Chagas disease (CD) is caused by the flagellate protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. It is endemic in Latin America. Nowadays around 6 million people are affected worldwide, and 75 million are still at risk. CD has two evolutive phases, acute and chronic. The acute phase is mostly asymptomatic, or presenting unspecific symptoms which makes it hard to diagnose. At the chronic phase, patients can stay in the indeterminate form or develop cardiac and/or digestive manifestations. The two trypanocide drugs available for the treatment of CD are benznidazole (BZ) and nifurtimox (NFX), introduced in the clini

The socioeconomic impact of inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) in Belgium: A cost-of-illness study.

INTRODUCTION: Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a diverse group of vision-threatening conditions caused by genetic mutations, affecting over 5.5 million people globally. These diseases have profound impact on patients, families and society. However, there is a lack of comprehensive data on their prevalence, economic burden, and societal costs. This information gap hinders effective decision-making, and the allocation of resources needed for research, treatment, and patient support, ultimately compromising care and outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the societal burden of IRDs in Belgium in

The potential global health impact and net monetary benefit of programmatic use of improved influenza vaccines: a mathematical modelling study.

Improved influenza vaccines, which may offer broader and longer-lasting protection than current seasonal vaccines, are under development and may play a critical role in reducing the global burden of seasonal influenza. Previous analyses have shown their potential health and economic benefits, but these depend on pricing structures and national-level adoption timelines. This analysis uses established epidemiological and economic influenza models, and demand and price projections outlined by the WHO Full Value of Improved Influenza Vaccines Assessment, to estimate the health impact and net monet

Appalachia - Bridging the Opioid Epidemic Amid the Fentanyl Crisis.

Although the opioid epidemic and fentanyl crisis are nationwide problems of immense proportions, calming the storm raging across the isolating geo-economic framework of Appalachia demonstrates the need for courageous, culturally effective programs that have the power to address and overcome the grave situation of addiction in this region. In the Appalachian region, unjust social structures are embedded in the communities' socio-economic conditions. As this reality poses even greater barriers to addressing the opioid epidemic in these communities, the restoration of social relationships within

Using Mendelian Randomization to model the causal effect of cancer on health economic outcomes and to simulate the cost-effectiveness of anti-cancer interventions

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND Cancer is associated with significant economic impacts. Quantifying the scale of these impacts is challenged by confounding variables that jointly influence both cancer status and economic outcomes such as healthcare costs and quality of life. Moreover, the increasing costs attributed to cancer drug development complicate the cost-effective provision of cancer care. METHODS We address both challenges in this paper by using germline genetic variation in the risk of incident cancer as instrumental variables in Mendelian Randomization analyses of eight cancers. We developed ca

Quantifying long-term health and economic outcomes for survivors of group B Streptococcus invasive disease in infancy: protocol of a multi-country study in Argentina, India, Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa.

Sepsis and meningitis due to invasive group B Streptococcus (iGBS) disease during early infancy is a leading cause of child mortality. Recent systematic estimates of the worldwide burden of GBS suggested that there are 319,000 cases of infant iGBS disease each year, and an estimated 147,000 stillbirths and young-infant deaths, with the highest burden occurring in Sub-Saharan Africa.  The following priority data gaps were highlighted: (1) long-term outcome data after infant iGBS, including mild disability, to calculate quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) or disability-adjusted life years (DALYs
