Non-Newtonian pulsatile blood flow through the stenosed arteries: comparison between the viscoelastic and elastic arterial wall in response to the alterations.

In this study, we investigate the impact of aortic stenosis on the hemodynamics of pulsatile blood flow within a 3D aortic model. Employing a non-Newtonian Casson model with a hematocrit of 45%, our study introduces a preliminary hypothesis to simulate blood flow dynamics, incorporating both linear elastic and viscoelastic models to define the mechanical characteristics of the artery. Through simulations conducted with Ansys-Cfx (version 15), we utilize a 2-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) approach, employing a Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation with second-order accuracy. We explore the inf

Improved super-elastic Ti-Ni alloy wire for treating adult skeletal class III with facial asymmetry: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Correcting severe skeletal class III malocclusion with facial asymmetry in adults through orthodontic treatment alone is difficult. CASE SUMMARY: In this case report, we describe orthodontic treatment and lower incisor extraction without orthognathic surgery for a 27-year-old man with a transverse discrepancy. The extraction sites were closed using an elastic chain. The use of intermaxillary elastics, improved super-elastic Ti-Ni alloy wire, and unilateral multibend edgewise arch wire was crucial for correcting facial asymmetry and the midline deviation. CONCLUSION: After treatme

A new type of elastic fixation, using an encircling and binding technique, for tibiofibular syndesmosis stabilization: comparison to traditional cortical screw fixation.

BACKGROUND: The distal tibiofibular syndesmosis (DTS) is a complex fibrous joint that contributes to the stability and weight-bearing function of the ankle. As such, repair of DTS injury is required, providing fixation strength while maintaining ankle range of motion. The aim of this study was to compare a new elastic fixation technique, using an encircling and binding technique, for DTS stabilization, compared to the traditional cortical bone screw fixation. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of 67 patients treated for a DTS injury at our hospital, between June 2019 and June 2021. Of

Doppler hemodynamic liver index and hepatic elastic modulus: Advanced ultrasonographic techniques for non-invasive prediction of esophageal varices in cirrhosis.

PURPOSE: Currently esophagoscopy is the gold standard for assessment of esophageal varices in cirrhosis. Predicting the presence of esophageal varices, varices needing treatment (VNT) and variceal grade by advanced ultrasonographic techniques using a combination of Doppler hemodynamic liver index (HDLI) (quantifying portal hypertension) and hepatic elastic modulus (quantifying hepatic fibrosis) would be a cost-effective and non-invasive alternative to routine endoscopy. METHODS: Our cross-sectional study consisted of cirrhotic patients diagnosed using clinical features and laboratory paramete

Construction and Simulation of Biomechanical Model of Human Hip Joint Muscle-Tendon Assisted by Elastic External Tendon by Hill Muscle Model.

Based on the Hill muscle model (HMM), a biomechanical model of human hip muscle tendon assisted by elastic external tendon (EET) was preliminarily established to investigate and analyze the biomechanical transition between the hip joint (HJ) and related muscle tendons. Using the HMM, the optimal muscle fiber length and muscle force scaling variables were introduced by means of constrained optimization problems and were optimized. The optimized HMM was constructed with human parameters of 170 cm and 70 kg. The biomechanical model simulation test of the hip muscle tendon was performed in the aut

PKCδ deficiency inhibits fetal development and is associated with heart elastic fiber hyperplasia and lung inflammation in adult PKCδ knockout mice.

Protein kinase C-delta (PKCδ) has a caspase-3 recognition sequence in its structure, suggesting its involvement in apoptosis. In addition, PKCδ was recently reported to function as an anti-cancer factor. The generation of a PKCδ knockout mouse model indicated that PKCδ plays a role in B cell homeostasis. However, the Pkcrd gene, which is regulated through complex transcription, produces multiple proteins via alternative splicing. Since gene mutations can result in the loss of function of molecular species required for each tissue, in the present study, conditional PKCδ knockout mice lacking PK

Influence of Resin Cement Thickness and Elastic Modulus on the Stress Distribution of Zirconium Dioxide Inlay-Bridge: 3D Finite Element Analysis.

The mechanical properties and the thickness of the resin cement agents used for bonding inlay bridges can modify the clinical performance of the restoration such as debonding or prosthetic materials fracture. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution and the maximum strain generated by resin cements with different elastic moduli and thicknesses used to cement resin-bonded fixed partial denture (RBFPD). A three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) was used, and a 3D model was created based on a Cone-Beam Computed Tomography system (CBCT). The model was analyz

Effects of elastic neutral ankle-foot orthoses on 3 dimensional parameters during gait training in patients with stroke: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: General ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) cannot be flexibly adjusted to volumetric change in the lower leg because the molding is custom-fit. Thus, we developed a flexible assistive device called elastic neutral AFO (EN-AFO) to help stroke patients hold a neutral ankle position. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of EN-AFO and improve gait patterns in stroke patients with rearfoot varus deformity. METHODS: Fifteen stroke patients with a varus deformity of the foot performed a walking test with and without the use of EN-AFO. Kinematic data were measured with a 3D mot

Development of dynamic cell and organotypic skin models, for the investigation of a novel visco-elastic burns treatment using molecular and cellular approaches.

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite advances in therapeutic strategies for the management of patients with severe burns, the sequelae are pathophysiologically profound, up to the systemic and metabolic levels. Management of patients with a severe burn injury is a long-term, complex process, with treatment dependent on the degree and location of the burn and total body surface area (TBSA) affected. In adverse conditions with limited resources, efficient triage, stabilisation, and rapid transfer to a specialised intensive care burn centre is

Glyoxal cross-linking of solubilized extracellular matrix to produce highly porous, elastic, and chondro-permissive scaffolds for orthopedic tissue engineering.

Extracellular matrix (ECM)-derived implants hold great promise for tissue repair, but new strategies are required to produce efficiently decellularized scaffolds with the necessary porosity and mechanical properties to facilitate regeneration. In this study, we demonstrate that it is possible to produce highly porous, elastic, articular cartilage (AC) ECM-derived scaffolds that are efficiently decellularized, nonimmunogenic, and chondro-permissive. Pepsin solubilized porcine AC was cross-linked with glyoxal, lyophilized and then subjected to dehydrothermal treatment. The resulting scaffolds we
