A study of 2 bone plating methods for fractures of the mandibular symphysis/body.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate outcomes for 2 bone plating techniques used in the treatment of mandibular symphysis/body fractures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients with adequate records treated for fractures of the mandibular body or symphysis by 2 miniplates or 1 stronger plate over an 11-year period were included. Demographic and outcome variables were collected and statistically analyzed to determine if the 2 treatments produced different outcomes. RESULTS: Six hundred eighty-two patients had sufficient follow-up for inclusion in this study. There were no si

Facial injuries in skiing. A retrospective study of 549 cases.

In the last 2 decades, reports of skiing injuries have shown an increasing number of skiers with severe trauma. This article provides an account of a retrospective study of 549 patients with 1155 facial injuries sustained while skiing who received treatment at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital in Innsbruck, Austria between 1991 and 1996. The study was based on a questionnaire answered by the patients and on case report forms. Most of the patients were male (65.2%) and were aged between 3 and 81 years (average 28.4 years). A simple fall while skiing was

Properties and applications of calcium hydroxide in endodontics and dental traumatology.

Calcium hydroxide has been included within several materials and antimicrobial formulations that are used in a number of treatment modalities in endodontics. These include, inter-appointment intracanal medicaments, pulp-capping agents and root canal sealers. Calcium hydroxide formulations are also used during treatment of root perforations, root fractures and root resorption and have a role in dental traumatology, for example, following tooth avulsion and luxation injuries. The purpose of this paper is to review the properties and clinical applications of calcium hydroxide in endodontics and d

Extensor mechanism ruptures.

The extensor mechanism of the knee consists of the quadriceps muscle and tendon, the patella, the patellar tendon, and the tibial tubercle. Disruption of any of these can lead to an extensor mechanism rupture and render an otherwise perfectly good total knee replacement (TKR) useless. Quadriceps tears associated with TKR are difficult to treat and associated with a poorer prognosis than in the native knee. Transosseous sutures tied over the distal pole of the patella are recommended. Patella fractures may heal in continuity or may involve a disruption of the extensor mechanism. The blood suppl

Bone-graft harvesting from iliac and fibular donor sites: techniques and complications.

The ilium and the fibula are the most common sites for bone-graft harvesting. The different methods for harvesting iliac bone graft include curettage, trapdoor or splitting techniques for cancellous bone, and the subcrestal-window technique for bicortical graft. A tricortical graft from the anterior ilium should be taken at least 3 cm posterior to the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS). Iliac donor-site complications include pain, neurovascular injury, avulsion fractures of the ASIS, hematoma, infection, herniation of abdominal contents, gait disturbance, cosmetic deformity, violation of the

Open anterior glenohumeral dislocation with associated supraspinatus avulsion: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Open dislocation of the glenohumeral joint is a very rare complication with only six cases described in the literature. Most cases resulted in severe complications like avascular necrosis of the humeral head or septic arthritis with poor functional results. The "mandatory" treatment of choice is surgery, with accurate debridement and reconstruction of the damaged soft tissues. However, the results in these cases do not approach those seen in classical dislocations. CASE SUMMARY: This case report is the first description of an anterior open glenohumeral dislocation without associat

High incidence of the os peroneum in a cadaver sample in Johannesburg, South Africa: possible clinical implications?

This study set out to investigate the incidence of the os peroneum in a cadaver sample from Johannesburg, South Africa and to note how bio-demographic parameters affect such incidence. The os peroneum (OP) is a sesamoid bone frequently found in the tendon of the fibularis longus muscle (FLM), as it passes on the plantar aspect of the cuboid bone. While this bone is often an incidental dissection room or radiological finding, OP fractures, with or without associated rupture of the fibularis (peroneus) longus tendons have been reported. Some investigators have also suggested that the presence of

A multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of an intruded maxillary permanent incisor complicated by the presence of two mesiodentes.

Treatment of a traumatically intruded maxillary incisor with an immature apex remains controversial. Treatment options include observation, surgical repositioning, or orthodontic forced eruption. Likewise, the ideal timing of surgical removal of a mesiodens is highly controversial: immediate versus delayed intervention. The complications associated with untreated supernumerary teeth include: overretention of primary teeth, delayed eruption of permanent incisors, rotations, impaction, diastema, pulp necrosis and root resorption. Less common sequelae include enlarged follicular sacs, cystic dege

Treatment of complex traumatic anterior dental injuries: a pediatric case report.

Traumatic injuries of permanent teeth in children present complex challenges. Growth and development influences, orthodontic considerations, and unknown endodontic and periodontal sequelae preclude immediate intervention with long-term restorations. "Interim" solutions are required to return the patient to the normal appearance, function, and health of the dental/alveolar complex until maturation of the patient allows long-term treatment planning. This report outlines diagnosis and treatment of multiple injuries, sustained by the maxillary anterior teeth. Step-by-step clinical procedures and t

Treatment of intruded permanent incisors: a multidisciplinary approach.

The case presented is a report of a healthy 11-year-old boy, who fell down and traumatized his four maxillary incisors. Both central incisors were deeply intruded with concomitant uncomplicated crown fractures, and both lateral incisors suffered concussion. The intruded teeth were repositioned using a removable orthodontic appliance and were endodontically treated 3 weeks after trauma. Tooth 11 became ankylosed 3 months post trauma, and tooth 21 was extruded to its original position after 5 months. Five months post-trauma, teeth 12 and 22 underwent necrosis and were endodontically treated. In

An Analysis of Junctional Tourniquet Use Within the Department of Defense Trauma Registry.

BACKGROUND: Junctional hemorrhage is a leading cause of battlefield death. Multiple FDA-approved junctional tourniquet (JTQ) models demonstrate effective hemorrhage control in laboratory settings. However, there are few real-world use cases within the literature. METHODS: We analyzed the Department of Defense Trauma Registry (DoDTR) for casualties with documented JTQ application (2007-2023). RESULTS: Of 48,301 encounters, 39 included JTQ placement. The most common injury mechanisms were explosives (23), followed by firearms (15). The most common (AIS >3) serious injury sites were the extremi

Paediatric dental trauma: insights from epidemiological studies and management recommendations.

Dental trauma is common in all age groups, although, epidemiologically, it is more common in children with studies that indicate that 15% of preschoolers and 20-25% of school-age children experience it. These injuries, which frequently call for immediate attention, can affect the hard tissues and supporting components of the teeth, and, because dental damage in deciduous teeth occurs frequently and affects speech, nutrition, and oral development, it is particularly worrying. After searching three databases, Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), and PubMed, and removing duplicates, 3,630 articles were
